BS: Winning a War vs. Winning a Peace

I've been thinking about human beings' myopia so clearly demonstrated here. All of these writers equated victory in Iraq with overwhelming its defenses. And yet- they MUST have known that the combination of troops, tanks, bombs and airpower could have only one possible outcome. They MUST have known that. We, on the Mudcat, knew. So why did none of them see beyond?

Here are some of them:

Brit Hume, Fox News, April 2003: "The majority of the American media who were in a position to comment upon the progress of the war in the early going, and even after, got it wrong. They didn't get it just a little wrong. They got it completely wrong."

Morton Kondracke, Fox News, April 2003: "Well, the hot story of the week is victory. The Tommy Franks-Don Rumsfeld battle plan, war plan, worked brilliantly, a three- week war with mercifully few American deaths or Iraqi civilian deaths. There is a lot of work yet to do, but all the naysayers have been humiliated so far. The final word on this is, Hooray."

Fred Barnes, Fox News, April 2003: "The war was the hard part. The hard part was putting together a coalition, getting 300,000 troops over there and all their equipment and winning. And it gets easier. I mean setting up a democracy is hard, but it is not as hard as winning a war."

Chris Matthews, MSNBC, April 2003: "Why don't the damn Democrats give the president his day? He won today. He did well today."

Jeff Birnbaum, Fox News, May 2003: "It is amazing how thorough the victory in Iraq really was in the broadest context… and the silence, I think, is that it's clear that nobody can do anything about it. There isn't anybody who can stop him. The Democrats cannot oppose him politically."

Tony Snow, Fox News, April 2003: "Tommy Franks and the coalition forces have demonstrated the old axiom that boldness on the battlefields produces swift and relatively bloodless victory. The three-week swing through Iraq has utterly shattered skeptics' complaints."

Bob Arnot, MSNBC, April 2003: "Chris,, more than anything else, real vindication for the administration. One, credible evidence of weapons of mass destruction. Two, you know what? There were a lot of terrorists here, really bad guys. I saw them."

Alan Colmes, Fox News, April 2003: "But first, now that the war in Iraq is all but over, should the people in Hollywood who opposed the president admit they were wrong?"

Bill O'Reilly, Fox News, January 2003: I will bet you the best dinner in the gaslight district of San Diego that military action will not last more than a week. Are you willing to take that wager?"

Joe Scarborough, MSNBC, April 2003:
"I'm waiting to hear the words, 'I was wrong,' from some of the world's most elite journalists, politicians and Hollywood types… Maybe disgraced commentators and politicians alike, like Daschle, Jimmy Carter, Dennis K8ucinich and all those others, will step forward tonight and show the content of their character by simply admitting what we know already: that their wartime predictions were arrogant, they were misguided and they were dead wrong. Maybe, just maybe, these self-anointed critics will learn from their mistakes. But I doubt it. After all, we don't call them 'elitests' for nothing."

Agreed Ebbie.

Today on Capitol Hill we still hear Blair mouthing the platitudes.
How NOBODY realised there were no WMDS!!
How we have a new dawn of democracy in Iraq, when in reality what we have is an unedifying scramble for power
Power which will surely go to the very fundamentalists we are supposed to be fighting in the "War on Terror"

In Iraq we have taken on Saddams job, only thing is ...we can't bear to admit it....Ake

Big deal. IIRC, Hitler over-ran Poland in less time than that. Ummmm.... Hey, waidaminnit....

Cheers,

They all just say whatever they're paid to say. We'll never know what they really thought at the time. (Most likely nothing... they probably don't know how to think without a script).

George W Bush May 1st 2003: " Mission Accomplished"

Appearing on the May 4, 2003, edition of CNN's Reliable Sources, syndicated radio host Laura Ingraham discussed her reaction to the President's announcement of May 1st 2003:

"Speaking as a woman, and listening to the women who called into my radio show, seeing President Bush get out of that plane, carrying his helmet, he is a real man. He stands by his word. That was a very powerful moment."

Eh ...ah forget it!

Hi Ebbie
The mainstream media went with the patriot claptrap & ran with it like a dog with a bone. The Media & the people that reported & rode this wave now have absolutely no credibility now & most don't have it in them to admit how wrong they were. Had they reported what they saw & knew & not tried to blindside the world's vision most would still be reading & believing what they print & telecast today. The media & the government went to bed with each other on this war. They invented the blog, they rose the aweareness of those who wanted the truth to seek out the news worldwide, they were the direct cause of the untrust that has arisen & to hell with them both for all the rest. They were at fault & it'll be generations before we'll heel. This was the same thing that happened in Viet Nam, I remember it, I lived through it & I cannot forget it because we didn't learn from it, many forgot it as a bad taste in there mouth & thanks for those that saw it coming again. Their persistence in trying to make excuses
only hurts us more & prolongs the agony & worstens the world situation. Until the people actually vote in a huge change or toss them out we'll have to live with them & what they've done all that much longer, they need to be accountable.
Thanks Ebbie for this post
Barry

Given that the voices you quote are mostly self-elected Pundits whose duty is to Explain the World to the Uninformed, how could they all have been so wildly misguided? What were they REALLY thinking? What were they SMOKing?

LOL!!!

Yes I agree BPL.
The Bush supporters on the Mudcat do sound just like the pundits. They sounded just like them before the War began, they sounded just like them when the War was declared over (oops) and some...well some actually think the War in Afghanistan and Iraq IS over! Scary huh!

I think I will send 10 dollars to an Orphanage in Iraq in your name
via Save the Children Foundation.
It was a hard choice, save an Owl, save a Child so I flipped a coin.
The Kid won.
