Lyr Add: Spider's Web

Subject: LYR REQ: Spider's Web?
From: Michele

I learned this one at camp 30 yrs ago. It has a haunting melody. There must be more lyrics...

"I met a stranger, his name was Danger
We rode side by side.
Way back in San Jose I killed a man they say
Danger told me to ride
Now if I return, they will hang me
By the old oak tree
By the fountain, in the vision, where my love told me.
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadow
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream, hold it tight 'til I awaken
As if to tell me that dreaming's all right.

I am looking for the full lyrics to a song I knew as a girl. The refrain is:

There's a web like a spider's web,
Made of silken shining thread and
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it still till I awaken, as if to tell me
That dream ends all right.

Anyone know the verses?

It's a web like a spider's web, made of silk and light
And shadow, spun by the moon in my room at night;
It's a web made to catch a dream, hold it tight
Till I awaken, as if to tell me that dreamin's all right.

1. Down in the valley, there's a mission, by an old oak tree;
By the mission, there's a fountain, where my love told me...

2. I met a stranger, his name was Danger, we rode side by side,
Down in Santa Fe, I killed a man they say, Danger told me, ride(?)...

That's the way we sang it at Camp Tattapanum. I have no idea of the source. Nice and mushy, the way 11-year-old girls like it! Full o' sap!

I'm looking for words to a song. The chorus goes something like:

"There's a web like a spider's web, made of silver line and shadow.
Spun by the moon in my room at night.
It's a web made to catch a dream. Hold it tight till I awaken.
As if to tell me the dream is all right"

Any ideas of how I can find the verses?

I know some, from an old camp song:

Down by the mission, down by the fountain, there is an old oak tree
Down by the mission, down by the fountain where my love told me...
(Chorus)
Way down in Santa Fe, I killed a man one day
(Think there's another line but don't know it)
(Chorus)
I met a stranger, his name was danger (?) Danger told me "Ride."
(Chorus)
And now if I return, they will hang me, up from the old oak tree
Down by the mission, down by the fountain, where my love told me...
(Chorus)

That's rather incomplete and off the top of the head. There was a thread a while ago about camp songs, or starting a camp song archive of some sort, but I don't remember what came of it. I'd link you to it but I'm HTML illiterate. This song may not be in there, but you can check it (the thread) for other sources by doing a forum search and putting "camp song" in the 'body' box. Good luck!

Hmmmm. I knew I'd seen a line like that here. Click here for the lyrics. Apparently, the title of the song is just "Spider's Web." Animaterra, whose knowledge of Girl Scout songs is prodigious, was able to come up with lyrics. No background information. Guess I'll ask my sister, who claims to know every Girl Scout song ever imagined.

This was used as the theme song to an NPR show, The Spider's Web, that I used to listen to when I was in college back in ca 1982, 1983. They read children's books on the air.

I don't know if the song was written for the show, or the show was named after the song.

The singer of the theme song sounded very much like Tom Chapin.

Hope this helps.

The song is much older than the NPR show. I remember the jolt of surprise and delight when the show came on the air- I had sung that song at girl scout camp and now here it was! I don't think it was Tom Chapin singing, tho.
I'll work on that tune tonight!

Spider's Web

Down in the valley,
There is a mission
Down by the old oak tree
Down by that mission,
There is a fountain
Where my love told me:

It's a web like a spider's web

As if to tell me that dreaming's all right.

My love dreamed of me

She was weeping
When she said to me:

It's a web like a spider's web
Made of silk and light as shadows
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight 'till I awaken
As if to tell me that dreaming's all right.

I met a stranger,
His name was Danger
We rode side by side
Way down in Santa Fe,
I killed a man they say
Danger told me, "Ride!"

It's a web like a spider's web
Made of silk and light as shadows

And now if I return,
They will hang me

From: GUEST

So glad someone else still remembers this song.

Funny how many slight variations of lyrics to a given song there can be, though...

This song is one of my four-and-a-half-year-old son's favorites right now. I sing the chorus and make up "happy thought" lyrics related to things he likes to do for the verses (because the verses I remember were too scary or at least irrelevant for a four-year-old)... I especially use this when he's awakened in the middle of the night from a "nightmare" of sorts, is having trouble falling asleep, or just requests it on a whim. It's his "happy thoughts song."

Our version of the chorus:
There's a web like a spider's web, made of silk and light in shadow;
Spun by the moon in my room at night.
It's a web made to catch a dream, hold it tight 'til I awaken,
as if to tell me the dream is all right.

And I can only remember one verse as I learned it at camp anymore:
I met a stranger, his name was Danger; we rode side by side.
Down in Santa Fe, he killed a man they say, Danger told me to ride...

There's another verse about sitting under a tree or something, but I can't remember it.

An example of some made-up "happyt thoughts" verses our son likes:
In the summer, we go to the beach, and we have some fun.
I like to play, with my cousins, in the water and sand...

We love the zoo, all of the animals; when they jump and play, it's a sight.
The aye-ayes and bush babies like the dark, dark room of night....

So, the versions are endless... "sing me one about my play date with Owen... how 'bout my swimming lessons... our trip to the aquarium"... anything at all. It's fun.

I saw a calf with a mournful eye...

Also, thank you so very much for the TUNE! I was quite pleased with myself to have kept that straight all theses years.

It's interesting...the tune is not what the human forgets, it's the words.

Music is primal.

The lyrics as I learned them are slightly different, but the same general idea:

There is a fountain
In a valley
By a big oak tree
And by that fountain
In the valley
My love first told me:

(chorus)
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadow
That I weave in my room each night
It's a web made to catch a dream
And hold it there until I waken
There to tell me, my dream is all right

I met a stranger
His name was Danger
We traveled side by side
But then in Santa Fe
I shot a man one day
And I had to ride

And if they catch me
They will hang me
From the big oak tree
Down in the valley
By the fountain
Where my love told me:

(Chorus)

Those songs bring back such good memories. Do you remember singing the song about Canada that we always sang because the Camp Director was Canadian? Started with "My country is my cathedral, the northern sky its dome"

Peaches was from Mississippi, Cristy was there most of the years I was there and I think she went to Bridgewater state. I have great memories and would love to find any of my tent mates. Cedarwood, Birchwood, Tupelo any of this sound familiar? Calico?? Hmm. that sounds familiar. One of the counselors wrote a song,. I think is went: "The trees are whispering, they whisper loud and clear" We sang alot of peter, paul and mary songs. How do we find each other?

When I learned this song (church camp) the chorus had 2 parts. The one already posted and then the one I've posted; sung as a harmony (sorry no sound) I'll attempt to show how they overlapped with sort of basic progression on a piano. I would also add they we didn't sing this slow like versions I've heard online. I never considered it a lullaby because of the speed.

There's a we------b                THERE'S A WEB LIKE A SPIDERS WEB
Like a spiders we---b             MADE OF SILVER LIGHT AND SHADOW
Spun by the moon in my room at night (SAME)
it's a we--------b                   IT'S A WEB MADE TO CATCH A DREAM
made to catch a drea--m            AND HOLD IT FAST IT I AWAKEN
As if to tell me my dreams are alright. (SAME)

On a piano I figured it out to be A1=lower octave A = an octave up from A1

there's   a       web
A1       A1       A

Like a   spider's   web
A    A    B          A

Spun by the moon in my room at night
F#    F# G   A   A   A G    G A

It's a   web
A1    A1   A

Made to catch a dream
A    B   A   G F#

As if to tell me my dreams are al--right
F# F# G A   A A   G    G   A G F#

I used to listen to a show on NPR in 1982/1983 that used the "There's a web like a spider web" song as its theme music. I've been trying ever since to find out who sang that particular recording. It sounded a bit like Tom Chapin but I've been informed it wasn't. If anybody knows, I'd love to find out who it was!

There's a web made to catch a dream
Hold it tight and you will find that
Love is a dream and that dreaming's all right.

From N IL and learned at Girl Scout camp in NW WI in the mid 70s, but my version had a wishing well. Does anyone remember it with a wishing well?

Down in the valley
There is a wishing well
By the old oak tree
And in the wishing well
There is a spider's web
That my love told me

(Chorus)

Maybe the lyrics aren't nearly as important as the fact that so many of us had this shared experience at GS camp that so captivated us that decades after the fact we not only chase down the lyrics but we have been teaching the parts we remembered to our children. I was 10 when I first went to Camp Chapman Hills in East Troy, WI, and this summer I will be taking my 10-year-old daughter and the 17 other girls of my troop there and you know I will be teaching them this song. Thank you for supplying the rest of the lyrics, even if they weren't exactly how I remembered them. Now if I only learned to play guitar... :)

Hi All,

I went to Camp Tattapanum from 1968 - 1970 and also 1972. The first three years I was an "all summer long" camper. I remember Peaches, Kristy, Courage (who I'm still in contact with), Pixie and many others. I would LOVE to get back in contact with anyone who was there, especially during the years I would and might know. That was the best time of my life and I treasure those memories dearly.

I would probably be remembered by the name of "Beth" Clapp.

Hi All,

I realize that maybe I should have made a new thread for this, but since several people here have mentioned Camp Tattapanum, I put it here to be easier to find.

I have created a Facebook page for Camp Tattapanum in hopes that maybe some of us can re-connect. It's called "Friendships Links to Camp Tattapanum" in reference to our camp song that began "Friendship is a chain of gold, shaped by God's own perfect mold...."

Hope that you all happen across this and decide to check it out!

Friendship's Links to Camp Tattapanum

HI

I went to the site http://www.traditional-songs.com/index.php Tranditional Songs, and got the sheet music for free.

When I was at KU, about 1962-1965, my friends were all folkies. I find it weird that it's referred to as a Girl Scout Camp song, because none of us were anything like Girl Scouts. Anyway, one young man sang this one, had pretty much a monopoly on it ;^) and I always begged him to do it. He said that he and another boy had collaborated on writing it when he was in High School. His singing is the only place I ever heard it. I surely wouldn't have thought of it as a children's song! But there was a song "El Paso" (Marty Robbins?) popular when I was in high school that reminded me a bit of it in story (love and murder, running away on horseback), and pace, but Spider Web was better.

The boy was from Kansas City, named John Wahl, and the last I heard of him, he'd dropped out of college and joined the Navy.

I dropped out too.... sign of the times.

Here's an episode of the radio series. This was from WGBH Boston radio in the late 70s (I think). Could the singer have been Tony Saletan? He did several folksong programs for kids on WGBH TV before NPR/PBS was a reality.

I worked as a camp counselor at Camp Tattapanum summer of 1974 and then returned as assistant director for the summer of 1975. I was a college student from Kansas at that time and my camp name was "Burnie". The director's name was Gloria. I don't remember many campers or even the counselors anymore... it's been so long. The memories have faded over time, but I remember having tons of fun with the kids and other counselors. It was a wonderful experience that I treasure.

Not the best version but gives you an idea of the tune, which is actually the same as the "Gallow Hill Reel."

I spent over 20 years looking for "Spider's Web" lyrics; finally found them several years ago on Google. It was my very favorite Girl Scout camp song.

Here is the version we sang:

SPIDER'S WEB

CHORUS: There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadow
Spun by the moon in my room at night
It's a web made to catch a dream
Hold me tight 'til I awaken
As if to tell me that dreaming's all right

Down in the valley, there's a mission
By the old oak tree
By the mission, there's a fountain
Where my love told me

On the evening I was leaving
My love came to me
I was sleeping, she was weeping
And she said to me

I met a stranger, his name was Danger
We walked side by side
Down in Santa Fe, I killed a man they say
Danger told me to ride

Now if I return, they will hang me
'Neath the old oak tree
By the mission, near the fountain
Where my love told me

I remember this song from YMCA/YWCA camp in northern Minnesota in the early- mid 70's. Thanks for sharing, as all I could remember was the chorus.

My daughter loves to hear this song at night right now--I looked online to see if there were verses I didn't know about. I learned it in 1982 at a girl scout camp called Mitre Peak just outside of Alpine, Texas. The tune was slightly different, as were the words, in which we sang "a web that I weave in my room each night." I loved the idea that I was creating my own dreams, good and scary, and that remembering the dream was a sign it ended all right.
I also sang "made of silver shining shadows" but I bet I just heard it wrong!
Thanks to everyone for posting the lyrics, etc--a 15 year thread.

that is the one I learned at Camp Mary White in the 60's

There is a fountain
In a valley
By a big oak tree
And by that fountain
In the valley
My love first told me:

(chorus)
There's a web like a spider's web
Made of silver light and shadow
That I weave in my room each night
It's a web made to catch a dream
And hold it there until I waken
There to tell me, my dream is all right

I met a stranger
His name was Danger
We traveled side by side
But then in Santa Fe
I shot a man one day
And I had to ride

And if they catch me
They will hang me
From the big oak tree
Down in the valley
By the fountain
Where my love told me:

(Chorus)

I learned the song at Camp Indian Run in about 1971. Same as above except: "If I return, they will hang me..."
I sang it as a lullaby to my kids. Has anyone figured out its origins?

And I learned it in the mid-1960s at a YWCA camp in Wisconsin, Camp Talaki.

I found this site while googling to find out what the origin of the song was; I remembered the tune and the words – at least I thought I did! Until today, I always thought it was “made of silk and light of shadow.” That’s pretty, too.

So interesting how things morph over the years and tellings. Not sure if this is already well documented, but none of the words that I learned in the 70's are here. Also learned it at Liahona girls camp in No. Cal, and the midi tune posted is similar but quite different in places. We also sang is as a round, which is very pretty.

Here is how we sang it. -
There's a web like a spiders web,
made of silver light and shadow
Hung by the moon
in my room at night.
IT's a web made to catch your dreams
hold them fast till I awaken
as if to tell me
my dreams are alright.

Then - a tag after
There's a web
A spider's web
Hung by the moon in my room at night
it's a web
a spider's web
as if to tell me my dreams are alright.

The other person sings this - then they switch.

Down in the valley
there is a meadow
down by the old oak tret
Down in the meadow
there is a river
where my dreams flow free.
