I just tried the link on the Mudcat homepage for amazon, so the MC gets a cut of my purchase, but the link goes to a webhosting site...???

What should I do?

Old link pages often seem to get hijacked.

Hmmmm. The link works for me, Vixen. Try this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/themudcatcaf.

Joe:

That one doesn't go anywhere recogtnizable for some reason. Is it complete?

Interesting that if you go for mudcatcafe.com there is a whole commercial page that borrows key phrases from the Mudcat and generates commercial links based on them -- a clever little rip-off.

Amos -

I haven't checked it out, but I'm told that whitehouse.com is a porn site, but whitehouse.gov is just full of filth.

A select group of criminals appears to have bought up "misspelled" names in hopes of snatching the unwary. microsfot.com used to be a particularly noxious one.

Amazon is too smart for its own good. The link gets hijacked in favor of recommendations based on my cookie from past visits to Amazon, even when I type the Mudcat version into the address bar.

whitehouse.com is "America's Free Speech Forum" with news, chat room, and polls such as,

Should the U.S. build a 200 mile fence along the Mexican border?

Yes   67.35%
No    32.65%

Total: 50572 Votes

This has got me wondering, is this fence to keep the Mexicans out, or to keep the Americans in?

The fence is just to slow the incoming down enough so we can get a better estimate of the traffic, I think.

And it has been quite a while back that one of the big news mags ran the bit about the whitehouse.com, so maybe the girls managed to cash in and sell the name to the pols.

A legitimate question re this thread. I see the mudcat/amazon link in the little floating box, but the box cycles through several different notices. I thought I knew of a place where the link was "permanently" posted, but didn't find it where I dismembered it being.

Is there a "fixed" location, or do we have to catch it on the fly?

I suppose, Robin, I should have thought of how easily some old farts get confused. Perhaps I should have said "rotating ads." The little notices at the top of each page change nearly every time you open or re-open a new page.

When I opened this page, In the header at the top of this page, I saw:

Holiday Shopping?
Help the Mudcat!

Buy CDs from Camsco Records!
Contact Dick: (800)548-3655, PM, or email.

If you shop at Amazon.com, use
amazon.mudcat.org
and the Mudcat gets a cut!

Also, see our Support the Mudcat page.

When I went back to the main page, the same thing was there, but when I returned to this page I found:

Mudcat Auction Active Items
~ An Ireland Of Treasures CD
~ Ballads and Songs of Lancashire
~ Book, STORIES TOLD IN THE KITCHEN

And when I went back to the main page if found:

The Mudcat Blue Bottle Special

Order this wonderful collection
of songs for children today!

Then when I returned to this page I see:

Random Link
Stradivarious
http://www.stradivarious.co.uk
Live Music for Folk Dances, Country Dances, Barn Dances, Ceilidhs, Scottish Dances, Square Dances, Contra Dances Festivals, Workshops ...

The link to amazon.mudcat.org seems to be there only about a third (or less) of the times I open a page, rotating in pseudo-random cycles with several other "Good things to know." Similarly for the links to "Help Mudcat" and the " Support the Mudcat" pages.

So if I come to mudcat to get the link to go to Amazon on the mudcat kickback account, I have to stop in and wander around until it comes up in rotation. Of course, by the time I've wandered through a couple of pages at mudcat, I've forgetten what I wanted to order from Amazon (which saves me money but doesn't make any for mudcat).

I haven't found a place where the gimmicks to help mudcat are consistently all gathered together in one place that I could bookmark and return to, and always expect to find the goodies -

Maybe it's just my impression cause I'm old and easily confused too.

John

I noticed, the other day, when trolling the DT, that there are now Amazon widgets that let you hear snippets of different .MP3s of the song you're researching, for purchase (prices all seem to be between $0.49 and $0.99).

If I were to give into temptation and snag one, will Mudcat automatically get a cut? Or should I just make a note of the versions I like and toddle off to Amazon.mudcat.org on my own?

Getting ready to make a purchase from amazon uk. want to make certain mudcat gets a cut. how do I ensure it. I went through the portal on Mudact fromt page to amazon uk. the amazon url show mudcat in it. but when i go to my basket, there is no indication that mudcat will get a cut.

Advice before I click the pay for this purchase button would be appreciated.

Does Mudcat get a cut when you purchase used items from Amazon?

Becca is that question for me or another question?

I am buying some new kitchen gadgets. Maybe they don't qualify?

Tam, my question was not direct towards you, just asking in general. I shop a lot on Amazon but buy mostly used books/CDs/DVDs, etc and wasn't sure if used items qualify...
