...Billy Preston. Did a lot of work with the "Fab Four" and a song that hit the charts pretty well--"Nothin' from Nothin' Means Nothin." Hope I get this blue clicky thing correct. If not here's a copy&paste:

Damn, sorry to hear this. He was something. He also toured with the Stones, he was with them the first time I saw them in the Mid-Seventies.

He was on a US game show back in the mid 1950s. I think it was Groucho's "This Is Your Life". He proudly announced "I'm Bill Preston" and proceeded to play a little bit of piano. He must have been about 7 or 8 at the time.

Also played with gospel great Mahalia Jackson as a kid (according to the AP obit I read).

And many other greats, like Aretha, Sly Stone, etc.

He did a great job at the "Concert for George" -- probably his last gig. Gone to join George, I guess.

yours,

You Brits REALLY have a thing for stealing - the guy helps out on four or five tracks - and is given credit on three Beatles - and you xenophobits want to adopt a "N" into your cultural heritage? Let the man's glory live with the Blacks and not Liverpool. Little Richard, Jackson Five, Aretha Franklin, Sly and the Family, and his own original work.

Sad news - one of the great musicians and entertainers, and a delightful person.
Billy Preston toured Australia in the '60s with Ray Charles, and in the '70s as a solo act (absolutely solo, just him and a Hammond Organ with two Leslie Speakers).
I also saw him with James Cleveland in Detroit in '77, and finally met him in New Orleans in 2000 (pic at my website, access though Google)

Sadly the death of keyboard player Billy Preston has just been announced. One of the greats.

May he rest in peace.

And he played the young W.C.Handy in a biopic. I believe Nat "King" Cole played the adult role.

You Yanks REALLY have a thing for stealing - the guy helps out on four or five tracks as a session musician - and you want to be able to say that an American was in the Beatles on the basis of that?

FWIW, Fox News (an American outfit) called him the Fifth Beatle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fifth_Beatle shows that he's not the only one to have that tag either...

Graham.
