Req: Please Search the Book Again/Eastern Gate

From: janet752@christie.email.net

I've been trying to find the lyrics to an old gospel song my grandmother used to sing called "Eastern Gate." I've tried several searches by title and by different phrases in the song with no luck. Thanks for any help you can give me. Janet

Wolfgang- Thanks for the try.:-) I may have the title wrong. The song I'm thinking of starts with, "I dreamed I had died and gone to Heaven. I stood just outside the Eastern Gate and the man from within said, 'Have you been born again? Is your name written in the Book of Life?'" My grandmother called it Eastern Gate but perhaps it is "Book of Life" instead? Janet

Found in a forum at CowboyLyrics.com. It doesn't give a title:

PLEASE SEARCH THE BOOK AGAIN
written by Jerry Goff

1. I thought that I had died and gone to heaven.
I was standing just outside the gate.
The man from within said, "Have you been born again?
Is your name written in the Book of Life?"

CHORUS: Please search the book again. I thought my name was there.
I went to church on Sunday, though I never knelt in prayer.
Please search the book again before you make me go.

2. I told him of the deeds I had done.
I told him of the trophies I had won.
Then the man said to me, "Son, have you been set free?
Is your name written in the Book of Life?"

3. And then he turned and left me standing there.
I knew it was too late now for prayer.
So, my sinner friend, if you will enter in,
Your name must be in the Book of Life.

At Cyberhymnal, with midi.

THE EASTERN GATE
Isaiah G. Martin, 1905, words and music

I will meet you in the morning,
Just inside the Eastern Gate.
Then be ready, faithful pilgrim,
Lest with you it be too late.

Refrain
I will meet you, I will meet you
Just inside the Eastern Gate over there.
I will meet you, I will meet you,
I will meet you in the morning over there.

If you hasten off to glory,
Linger near the Eastern Gate,
For I'm coming in the morning;
So you'll not have long to wait.

Keep your lamps all trimmed and burning;
For the Bridegroom watch and wait.
He'll be with us at the meeting
Just inside the Eastern Gate.

O the joys of that glad meeting
With the saints who for us wait!
What a blesséd, happy meeting
Just inside the Eastern Gate!

(Echoes of Glory, glory here).
WYSIWYG mentioned this hymn in thread 21554.

The above seems to be one of several with this theme. I thought it worth posting although it does not seem to be the one sought. Source: http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/e/a/s/easterng.htm

The song that I posted above, without a title, is PLEASE SEARCH THE BOOK AGAIN, written by Jerry Goff, and recorded by Greg & Teresa Watson on the album "God Sees Me," 2003.

A somewhat different version was also recorded by Rev. Julius Cheeks under the title PLEASE SEARCH THE BOOKS OF LIFE on his album "Somebody Left on That Morning Train," 2001. There, it is called "Public Domain."

I am looking for an instrumental version of "Please Search the Book Again" and can't find it anywhere. I would love to be able to sing this in church but don't know it well enough without the music. If you could email me at board@pvt-tracy.usa.cc with moreinfo I would be much obliged.

You can listen to Rev. Cheeks' recording of the song here. Below is my transcription.

PLEASE SEARCH THE BOOKS OF LIFE
(public domain)

[spoken freely]
Listen gentlemen, I'm Rev. Cheeks.
Y'know I made the record about how sick I was, which was the truth
There was so much I wanted to put in that record I couldn't get on there -- y' wouldn't a had time to listen to it
But I took a trip and I had a dream, and the dream went like this:

I dreamed that I died (yes, I did) and went to Heaven
I was standing just outside the Eastern Gate (I don't know where you had a dream like this somehow)
And a man from within asked me had I been born again? (here's what I told him)
Said "I can't find your name on the Heavenly slate" -- I don't believe it

CHORUS
Please search the Books of Life
I thought my name was there
I went to the church on Sunday (I got one thing that I never did do)
But I never did kneel in prayer
Please search the Books of Life
It's too late now, I know
Please search the Books again
Before you make me go

(And I told him one more thing)
I told him all the good deeds that I'd done
I told him about the soldiers (talkin' to the Lord!) I had won, oh my Lord
And a man said to me, "Son have you been set free?
Are you sure you've met the Man from Galilee?"

CHORUS

On second thought, the ab lib part in the first sung stanza may have been "I don't know where you had a dream like this one, now"
