Eva,

My apologies ahead of time, if you've already done this, but if you go up to the blue box in the right hand corner, you will see a search box for the Digitrad Database. If you type in the words "pretty bird", several songs come up; maybe one of them is the right one?

Also, if you type in "hazel dickens" there are three of her songs that show up, but no "pretty bird".

Another place you might want to check is from the main Mudcat page, click on "Links". There are many sites there; one of them may have it.

You could also do a search of the Forum, where you listed this thread. It's possible this has come up before and you might find it there.

Hope this helps,

katlaughing

Hazel Dickens does an unaccompanied solo version of Pretty Bird on the "Hazel and Alice" album produced in 1973 by Rounder records. Not sure if this is the version you"re looking for.

The best I could do was piece together the following from several sound samples

... I see in your eyes the promise.
Your own tender love you bring.
Then fly away, little pretty bird,
Cold runner of spring.
Love's own tender flame...

PRETTY BIRD
(Hazel Dickens)

Fly away little pretty bird
Fly, fly away
Fly away little pretty bird
And pretty you'll always stay

I see in your eyes a promise
Your own tender love you'll bring
But fly away little pretty bird
Cold runneth the spring

Love's own tender flames warm this meeting
And love's tender song you sing
But fly away little pretty bird
And pretty you'll always sing

I cannot make you no promise
Love is such a delicate thing
Fly away little pretty bird
For he'd only clip your wings

Fly away little pretty bird
Fly, fly away
Fly away little pretty bird
And pretty you'll always stay

Fly far beyond the dark mountains
To where you'll be free evermore
Fly away little pretty bird
Where the cold winter winds don't blow

Note by Hazel Dickens: 'When I wrote "Pretty Bird" I was going through a lot of changes. Women have always been so put down and conditioned to believe certain lies about themselves that when I finally met a supposedly liberated man who was willing to accept me on an equal basis, I found it difficult to believe. Out of all these mixed feelings and ponderings, I wrote "Pretty Bird"'.

Dang! I spent half an hour transcribing this thing because some of the words are hard to understand - and now I see that Stewie found lyrics in a CD booklet. This is a later recording, and the wording is a little bit different. Since my transcription is by ear and Stewie's from the CD booklet, I'd say Stewie's is the definitive transcription. Nonetheless, I'll post mine so you can see the slight differences between the two recordings.

PRETTY BIRD
(Hazel Dickens)

Fly away, little pretty bird,
Fly, fly away
Fly away, little pretty bird,
And pretty you'll always stay.

I see in your eyes a promise
Your own tender love you'll bring,
But fly away, little pretty bird,
Cold runneth the spring

Love's own tender flames warms this meeting
And love's tender song should sing
But fly away, little pretty bird,
And pretty you'll always stay.

I cannot make you no promise
For love is such a delicate thing,
Fly away, little pretty bird,
For he, he'd only clip your wings.

Fly, fly away, little pretty bird,
Fly, fly away
Fly away, little pretty bird,
And pretty you'll always stay.

Fly far beyond the dark mountain,
To where you'll be free evermore
Fly away, little pretty bird,
Where the cold winter winds don't blow.

An earlier version was recorded for the Rounder album, Hazel and Alice

While I suppose it could be done, I don't see why one would want to do so. Perhaps that is my lack of imagination.
