BS: Budget Cutting/NPR and PBS on the Block

Got this in the mailbox yesterday. If you listen to and value NPR and PBS you may want to go look at the petition.

***************************************

........"Republicans say they remain adamant that public broadcasting cannot receive funding at the expense of healthcare and education programs.

Republicans are looking for ways to save taxpayers' dollars, amid fiscal conservatives' concerns over the budget deficit.

``We've got to keep our priorities straight," said Representative Ralph Regula , an Ohio Republican who is chairman of the appropriations panel that approved the cut. `` You're going to choose between giving a little more money to handicapped children versus providing appropriations for public broadcasting."
Boston Globe article,6/8/06.

Everyone expected House Republicans to give up efforts to kill NPR and PBS after a massive public outcry stopped them last year. But they've just voted to eliminate funding for NPR and PBS—unbelievably, starting with programs like "Sesame Street."

Public broadcasting would lose nearly a quarter of its federal funding this year. Even worse, all funding would be eliminated in two years--threatening one of the last remaining sources of watchdog journalism.

Last year, millions of us took action to save NPR and PBS, and Congress listened. We can do it again if enough of us sign the petition in time.

This would be the most severe cut in the history of public broadcasting. The Boston Globe reports the cuts "could force the elimination of some popular PBS and NPR programs." NPR's president expects rural public radio stations may be forced to shut down.

The House and Senate are deciding if public broadcasting will survive, and they need to hear from viewers like you.

Yep, it's for real again, not a hoax. I signed the petition and sent letter to my representatives last week.

There is a significant minority (maybe a majority) of the House majority that will shit-can anything that that comes to them from Move-on.org (just more of them librals, ya know?). You can send a message from the NPR/PBS site if you prefer.

Good idea, Art. I ignore moveon.org the same as I do Shaun Hannity,

I signed the petition but left off my street address and it went through, seemingly. I did put my town and zip in however, in order to reach the appropriate representatives.

If they're so goddamned anxious to save money, how's about they stop giving it to Haliburton or spending it on grotesque weapons systems, hey?

Thanks for that link Art. I filled out another one just to cover my ass.

Amos, they need that money to aid handicapped children that get blowed up overseas and they can't very well break the circle of funding by cutting back on grotesque weapons systems can they?

"Republicans are looking for ways to save taxpayers' dollars, amid fiscal conservatives' concerns over the budget deficit."

May I suggest that the Iraq War be fought only on days that are prime numbers? For example, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 13, 29. Averaging a 30-day month, the savings will be huge. It should cut the war costs by 2/3. Savings: Substantial. For everything else there's Master Card.

Republicans have been trying to destroy public broadcasting for a very long time. The fact they seem to be threatened by programming that is so restrained, and makes such an effort to be balanced and responsible ought to send up red flags everywhere--

Signing petitions is not enough--we all need to write two checks, one to our favorite PBS outlet, and one to a congressional candidate who supports public broadcasting.

I wonder what they're really trying to pass off on the American people while they distract them with yet another fight to save NPR and PBS? Sleight of hand is the best trick they do up there on Capitol Hill.
