music in dublin

Hi. Some good friends (including their 9 year old daughter who plays a hot lead guitar) are moving to Dublin in the next few weeks for an extended period. Their musical tastes are eclectic, with an accoustic/trad preference. I know it's a broad topic but can someone suggeste a handful of not-to-be-missed music venues that I can pass on to help them get started?

Thanks.

michael

PS -- I've been a member of the Cat now for about a month. . . what a fine place to hang out. Thanks again.

Hey Michael.

The Cobblestone bar on Smithfield square has live (and very good) traditional sessions every night of the week and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

It's also got weekend gigs: trad. irish bands, old time, singer-songwriters, country... usually a good place to check out.

Whelans on Wexford St. is a venue for slightly higher-profile but still mostly "underground" music, but your friends' young daughter wouldn't be allowed in- over 18yrs. only.

Hope that helps
Danny

(my first post to this board, though i've been lurking around for an age)

Have them pick up the weekly "In Dublin" guide or see the less complete online version here..

Trad is all over the place in Dublin, as are other sorts of wonderful music. It is one of the best music cities anywhere.

Try Hughes' at the back of the Four Courts.

O'Sheas.

Harcourt Hotel.

If it's singing they're after, there is the An Góilín singers club on Fridays these days I think. And last I heard, at Maye's pub.

Can't recall if they meet in summer, though.

If they lean towards a more enlightened sort of attitude, they might like to also have a look at Indymedia Ireland's what's on page for the arts.

Also, Temple Bar Music Centre, Bewley's on Grafton, Brazen Head, and one of my favorite places in all Dublin, Thomas Reads.

Sorry, also meant to mention the RTE what's on site as well.

Thanks. I'll pass along the suggestions -- sort of as a parting gift that doesn't take up any space.
