Lyr Req: Trudy (Tobias/Sherman)

From: Muttley

I was busking this morning and an elderly chap approached and asked whether I had heard of an "old" song called "TRUDY" and/or whether I had the lyrics.
I can't say I've heard of this one and as he provides old-time music (as DJ, no less) for retirement homes and elderly cits clubs, I felt I just had to ask for him.

Sp is there anyone out there who has the words (chords too if you've got 'em) for this old song

Thanks

Muttley

No Joy there Peace: he didn't actually say - but i get the impression that it's probably at least pre '50's - - - possibly pre-20's.

He said an 'old girl' from down country Victoria used to do it on an organ her father used to help her cart around in her earlier days to various "community singing" type events / dances etc.

He reckons all the "oldies (as he puts it - and HE looks about 640!) know the tune - but no-one he knows, knows the lyrics.

Is it this one?

TRUDY
Charles Tobias, Al Sherman.

Trudy, we always want you near us.
Trudy, when you're around, you cheer us.
You've got a smile worth a million to see.
You're such a cutie, you're just as sweet as tutti-frutti.
Trudy, who'll be the lucky fellow?
Tell, oh, tell us, please do.
Trudy, we mean it truly-ooly-ooly-ooly.
Trudy, we love you.

[As recorded by Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra in 1926. The Red Hot Jazz Archive has the RealAudio file: Click to play.

[There are other songs called TRUDY. Charlie Daniels wrote and recorded one. Johnny Carroll wrote and recorded one in the late 1950s.]

That could be the one Jim; I'll copy it down and send it on o the old chap who asked and I'll chase up the Johnny Carroll version - unless you know it and can post it here or 'PM' it

Thanks

Muttley

Can anybody tell me who Paul Whiteman's singer was in the mid-twenties. I've been told it was Paul himself, but I'm not so sure.

According to Discography of American Historical Recordings, there were 3 vocalists on the Paul Whiteman Orchestra's recording of TRUDY. They were: Charles Gaylord, Austin "Skin" Young (tenor), and Jack Fulton.
