BS: What tunes help you get a groove on?

Hello all;
I'll get the alterior motive out of the way first: I am training for a mini-marathon this summer and because of work eating my days, it means I usually end up at the gym on a treadmill at ungodly hours at least three times a week. To alleviate the drudgery I loaded up the mp3 player with good music, but even playing it on 'random' it's getting pretty dry. Can you all help? What tunes make you shake your moneymaker (or rattle your coinpurse --hey, I've met some of ya and it ain't far from the truth!) Anything with a good beat that I may have overlooked? Thanks in advance.

JenEllen,

If you mean what uptempo songs would I recomend you check out, I'd say how about a compilation of 60s R&B, Soca, Zydeco, with some King Sunny Ade African beat added to the mix?

Alot of James Brown might be good, and the Soca song Hot Hot Hot! is =well-it's hot!

I don't know how to down load music, but I tried to google Hot Hot Hot! and got to this website http://www.freemusicconnection.com/jumps/mfms/?refer=FMC80art

****

I usually HATE websites that have music playing when you get to that site, but that song that is playing might work for you-if what you're looking for is music to exercise to...

And check out the silohette {sp?} of that man dancing...

hmmmm...

So you wanted to get your groove on, right? Is this what you were talking about?

:o))

Best wishes,

Azizi

Thanks, Azizi. That's exactly what I'm talking about. I've dowloaded just about everything from disco to bhangra. It's all good!

One of my FAVORITE music workouts is running to Santana's "Samba Pa Ti". One step per beat. It starts out slow and builds to an incredible (but do-able) leg turn-over pace.

First two tracks of Jesse Winchester's "Gentleman Of Leisure" -- Club Manhattan, and Sweet Little Shoe.

Of course all the best in dance music...

JenEllen,

I'm glad you're getting some more music to groove to while you're exercising.

Btw, best wishes on the mini-marathon!

The scherzo from Bruckner's Ninth Symphony.

I doubt all that thundering bass and massive brass would work very well as mp3s, though.

John: Another good samba is the re-make of Sergio Mendes "Mas Que Nada" with the Black-Eyed Peas. I could go forever on that one. Thanks for the reminder--I'd forgotten about Jesse. "God's Own Jukebox" is a stepper too.

Wys: Curly Shuffle? LMAO. That's too good.

Azizi: thanks. I used to have a job where I was either chasing something or being chased by something for a better part of the day (at the very least standing for hours). When I got a mostly-desk job I needed something to burn off the crazies of the day. This definately helps.

Morty: The wonder mutt goes with me to the park if I get out of work at a decent hour. NO headphones at the park, EVER. The last thing any woman needs is to be distracted when the world is full of creepies. Tunes are strictly for treadmill and zoning out from the day. But, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to be kidded into housework!

All: thanks for the list. I'll go hunting when I get home tonight. You're the best!

Actually JenEllen, Shake Your Moneymaker by the old Fleetwood Mac is a good one. Also:
Bertha, Cumberland Blues, Uncle John's Band and a bunch more by The Grateful Dead
Express Yourself by Bobby Radcliffe
World Turned Upside Down by Dick Gaughan gets my juices flowing.
Impressions, Mr.PC by John Coltrane.
Wild Nights by Van Morrison.
Plains of Kildare by Irvine and Brady
Music for a Found Harmonium sounds perfect,I also like the Patrick Street version.

Keith Secola and His Wild Band of Indians, esp. his "Circle" CD.

Let's see...just about any taiko CD - always gets Morgan jiving, bouncing around, like some of These Folks. Or, THese Ones.:-)

Jed Marum's SANDS OF ABERDEEN and Mick's Conkln Ceilidh Band CD. Both have some rockin' stuff on them!

Rue and I used to clean house to the Aqua CD which has Barbie Girl on it! The whole album is high energy and a lot of fun, believe it or not! I still put it on when I want to get moving. (Not recommended for young grrrls, though:-)

GOOD to *see* you, Jendarlin'!

Oh, oh! Mark Knopfler's CD Ragpicker's Dream - several on there, esp. Quality Shoes.

Also, have you heard any of these: Kristofferson...scoll down and click on the song titles to hear all three. Maybe not fast enough, but damn they are good!:-)

It kinda depends on just what kind of time you are shooting for in that marathon... The stuff that you're listening to, though upbeat, ain't got much "kick" to them... No offense...

See, if I were going to run a marathon I'd shoot for a little quicker a pace and throw in some:

AC/DC
Spooky Tooth
Jethro Tull
Metallica
Poison
Ten Years After
Led Zepplin
The Kinks
Cream
Bon Jovi
more "Black Crows"
Mississippi Fred McDowell
Jessie Mae Hemphill

Yeah, them folks get that marathon time down a few minutes...

Thanks, all. Good stuff. This is the worst time of year--itching to get outside but it's still below freezing most mornings. Good music helps to forget you're on a glorified hamster wheel. *bg*
