From: GUEST,Charlotte Winroth Im a swedish woman who will larp in july, and i desperatly want someone to help me with the lyric of Airfailarin, a song i want to know by then. I have the version of it that Skilda made, but after having used my blunt wits half an hour I've almost given up. Google, altavista, www.skilda.com, the lyric is nowhere to be found. I will try to understand what is being sung, but since english isnt my first language I only catch "to believe in love" here and "love is hard" there. I intend to make a swedish lyric, but id like to stay true to the original as far as possible so that it'll only be a translation. Yours truly// Charlotte Winroth |

'Air Faillirin' or 'Air Faillirinn' would be more usual spellings; a search via Google for the latter returns plenty of results, but note that the phrase occurs in more than one song -or in very different variants of the same song- and that a tune of that name has been set to other words (including Burns' 'My Heart's in the Highlands') at various times. The text George indicates is one possibility. It's impossible to be more precise without more information (where did Skilda get the song?), so I'd suggest Charlotte tries the spelling I've indicated to see if she can find something she recognises. It isn't 'Air fa la la lo', at any rate. |

But since it was mentioned, I thought I would put it up, just in case. There are, as Malcolm points out, several songs which have that as the first part of the chorus. The song I pointed out is a fairly popular one in milling song circles, or waulking song circles. I've got at least two other possibilities that are in books I own, but I haven't heard sung in recent times. So, please give us a few more hints. |

The chorus, where people join in, is a mystery to me still, but at least each line begins with "Airfailarin" (Hums is what i _absolutely_ cannot make out, and the rest is guesswork. I know it to be a Gaelic Air in 6/8 slow march. Its in Pipe Major John A. MacLellan's long-out-of-print sheet music book "Music For The Highland Bagpipe" on page 34. He didn't compose it, but included an arrangement in his book -- my understanding is its a VERY old tune. *Not* a reel however. |

There's nothing wrong with my writing eala as that is what eal' is an abbreviation of "eala" (swan), and in this case n'an is an abbreviation of "na an", "than the". In both cases the vowel would not be spoken twice, hence the abbreviation. But I would say my only real error -and it is quite bad - is where I wrote "gille" instead of "gile". And please do say something besides just giving a url which might be for anything - https://youtu.be/JVG2o9lrxOI is another recording of "Dance to your Shadow". I know this is a strange thread about a few different songs with similar Air Fàillirinn Iù choruses. |
