Tune Req: Folk Ringtones? Is There Any?

Having recently upgraded to a newer phone, a friend who got themselves a new one gave me their old one, is there any Folk/Traditional based ringtones going arround?

Firstly, the correct grammar should be ARE there - tunes being plural.

Secondly, the answer is yes. Some phones can be adapted to use MP3s as ringtones.

I've got Captain Pugwash and the Tanqueray Martini shanty on mine, but please don't ask how it got there, someone sent it to me! All I know is that Bluetooth was involved and they had to copy it.

The answer is yes. The ringtone on my cell phone is Peter Seger singing "This Land Is Your Land". A quick Google search will yield a surprising number of folk ringtones. You have to dig a bit to get the good ones. Some of what they call folk is clearly not. But it is there.

All the best,

Mick

Possibly - I'm of the generation that can't hear it without thinking of Tom the Cabin Boy, Ahoy the Black Pig and spuriously named seamen.

There are free ringtones available for download on the Foot Stompin' website.    http://www.footstompin.com/

Are they free though? I've just had a look for some and of the 3 sites stating 'free', I was charged for all three... is this some meaning of the word 'free' that I wasn't formerly aware of?

Here are some, but they ain't free!

They all seem to involve joining a club for £3 a week just to get your 'free' ringtone.

Watch out for the club scam. Once you sign up they keep charging £3 each week until you "unsign". Our lad got stung quite badly when some "friend" signed his phone up to one which downloaded jokes to his phone.   He didn't realise what was going on but every time he tried to top up his phone credit, the "joke subscription" used up all the credit he put on the phone.
Be Warned.
Quack!

You could get a phone which allows you to record sounds, then use them as ring tones...I am embarrassed to say, I have done that with some of my musical friends...recorded them in mid song/tune and then set each person's tune as their own ring tone...(make sure you ask, though!)
Errrr yes, I know that is sad...and yes, I do have a life that is fairly busy and interesting and and and...    :-)

You can compose your own on my phone - the Worst Ever Version of 'Pas El Agua' plays when I get a call!

Do the following to your phone:

Hold it to your ear and hit the numbers thus:

6 5 4 5 6 6 6 5 5 5 6 6 6 6 5 4 5 6 6 6 6 5 5 6 5 4

Keep a steady rhythm.

"any Folk/Traditional based ringtones going arround?"

Maybe. First, ya gotta define folk.

I once called a friend long distance at about 4:00 AM and played that for him. He didn't have the decency to thank me. I called him back at about 4:30 to tell him. He broke an FCC law.

LtS, the Footstompin ones are entirely free. Just download to your hard disc, then do what you like with them.

My program HARMONY will create ringtones from abc, but only for certain selected phones, the ones where you have to type in an obscure sequence of letters and numbers yourself!

I have 'My Johnny was a Shoemaker' on my phone - though this isn't strictly folk - it was written in the USA about 1859, and a printed copy of the lyric can be seen in the Lester Levy collection.

If you can use Footstompin downloads from your hard disc, presumably you could use any other bit of music from the hard disc?

My mobile now plays The Wurzels "Combine Harvester" as the ringtone.

I know, sad, very sad, very very sad.

Can't think how it got there.

My mobile plays Horslips' 'Dearg Doom' - which is basically 'O'Neill's Cavalry'.

I got sent a splendid Nokia ringtone that starts up normally then slides down the scales ending in an explosion.... it really winds people up because they think it's my batteries going!

If I could work out how to transfer a file from my computer to my phone, I'd be a very VERY happy bunny.

My daughter got some from ringtonenation.com including one they call How much is the fish. I reckon it's one of Martin Carthy's songs - possibly a ballad but I can't put a name to it.

I have got a military band, playing Hearts of Oak - had been desperate for it as a ringtone for years (downloaded one once, but it turned out to be sooo bad, I was embarrassed to use it). Eventually heard someone with this one, at a 'do' I was at and he blue-toothed it across to me - it was magic! I'm proud to say, it was a sailor who I got it off - couldn't be more appropriate!

I have a phone that allows realtones and a data cable to connect my phone to the computer so I can have what I like really.
Seth Lakeman's Kitty Jay has been a ringtone of mine in the past.

Ken Johnson had 'Bringing in the Sheaves' on his phone for a bit but I think his lad progammed it in.

There is also a program out there which lets you create your own from any song you have in your collection. A young fan of my band took our recording of "Billy O'Shea" and it is now his ringtone.

All the best,

Mick
