Your favorite music themed movies?

Not musicals exactly, but--

Well, Prairie Home won't be on my list.

But others that do:

Alan Parker's "The Commitments"

"This is Spinal Tap"

"The Mambo Kings"

"A Hard Day's Night"

"Tender Mercies"

"Amadeus"

I'll think of more. Has anyone ever made a film about Beethoven?

Great soundtrack, but there was no theme about music or musicians in the plot.

What's the one about the viola de gamba players, something about every Saturday afternoon in July or April?

Immortal Beloved

My wife would certainly say Phantom of the Opera; me, I found it tedious--although Emmy Rossum is great (first seen in Song Catcher)

re: the viola da gamba players: do you mean "Tous les matins du monde"? It was about Sainte Coulombe, the 17th century viol player, and his protege Marin Marais, and starred Gerard Depardieu? Jordi Savall -- a remarkable viola da gamba player, among his other talents -- was responsible for putting together the film's music.

Also:

There was a pretty good bio of Leadbelly, called "Leadbelly," directed by Gordon Parks in the mid-seventies.

Spinal Tap is a classic, difficult to imagine anyone beating that in a hurry. But I think my total favourite would have to be "The Glen Miller Story". James Stewart and a doodle bug, what more could you ask for in a movie?

I just saw Dig, a film that follows the relationship between The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. Now I imagine that they may not be to many folks taste, but as an insight into one part of the music scene, it's unparalelled.
I still love Sweet and Lowdown way too much too.

That about covers every movie I wouldda picked! Among the long, long list it's difficult, if not impossible, to pick a "favorite." It's like trying to pick your favorite song...too many years, beers, fears and tears.
Right now, my top 3 would be:
Almost Famous
O Brother...

O Brother Where Art Thou?
Carousel (sorry, but I love the music - and yes I know it is not a music themed movie).
Call Me Madam - on the same basis, but also because I love Ethel Merman & Donald O'Connor acting & singing together. A great dynamic.

Latcho Drom (brilliant! Follows the paths the gypsies have taken through different countries and shows their music in each place and you can see how it has picked up local influences but kept the original foundations)
And my vote for Black Orpheus, too - although I haven't seen it for a decade or so.

Electric Dreams. And this isn't a music-themed movie either, but it has a poignant musician's scene in it where the female lead, a cellist, gets into a lift and is jostled just as the doors close and the neck of her cello is broken completely. The others in the lift, and also the male lead/love interest don't get why she is so devastated. I get it. Mudcatters would get it.

There are films that didn't start out as "music themed," but their sound tracks are so iconic that a couple of notes are enough to evoke the entire film.

Jaws (scene)

Sol illustrates the difference I was showing: 2001 and Excalibur weren't intended to be musical films, they just use classical pieces in such a way that brought a lot of attention to that music. I'll insert another one: Elvira Madigan made Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 into a hugely popular piece. For years you'd hear the regular name plus "Elvira Madigan theme" in parentheses, and people would hear Also Sprach Zarathustra and visualize the monoliths on the moon in the film Kubrick film. O Fortuna (the best known part of Carmina Burana) has been used (or mimicked) in many films. From Reddit:
The film that brought it into fashion as a score cue was Excalibur (1981). It was then used in Glory, Hunt for Red October, The Doors, Natural Born Killers and others. By the 2000s it was being used ironically or comedically in Jackass, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

The author of that remark was quickly corrected when it was pointed out that the two films I struck through were only meant to suggest the Orff piece.

The Blues Brothers and Yesterday were always intended to elevate the music.
