21 Jun 06 - 05:16 PM (#1765908) Subject: RE: Your favorite music themed movies? From: Helen O Brother Where Art Thou? Carousel (sorry, but I love the music - and yes I know it is not a music themed movie). Call Me Madam - on the same basis, but also because I love Ethel Merman & Donald O'Connor acting & singing together. A great dynamic. Latcho Drom (brilliant! Follows the paths the gypsies have taken through different countries and shows their music in each place and you can see how it has picked up local influences but kept the original foundations) And my vote for Black Orpheus, too - although I haven't seen it for a decade or so. Electric Dreams. And this isn't a music-themed movie either, but it has a poignant musician's scene in it where the female lead, a cellist, gets into a lift and is jostled just as the doors close and the neck of her cello is broken completely. The others in the lift, and also the male lead/love interest don't get why she is so devastated. I get it. Mudcatters would get it. Helen |

17 Dec 25 - 09:21 AM (#4233105) Subject: RE: Your favorite music themed movies? From: Stilly River Sage Sol illustrates the difference I was showing: 2001 and Excalibur weren't intended to be musical films, they just use classical pieces in such a way that brought a lot of attention to that music. I'll insert another one: Elvira Madigan made Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 into a hugely popular piece. For years you'd hear the regular name plus "Elvira Madigan theme" in parentheses, and people would hear Also Sprach Zarathustra and visualize the monoliths on the moon in the film Kubrick film. O Fortuna (the best known part of Carmina Burana) has been used (or mimicked) in many films. From Reddit: The film that brought it into fashion as a score cue was Excalibur (1981). It was then used in The author of that remark was quickly corrected when it was pointed out that the two films I struck through were only meant to suggest the Orff piece. The Blues Brothers and Yesterday were always intended to elevate the music. |
