21 Feb 99 - 08:14 PM (#59502) Subject: The Holy Modal Rounders From: Lonesome EJ Many years ago,there was a very strange offshoot of traditional folk music that included Wild Man Fischer,Country Joe and the Fish, Captain Beefheart among others.A friend of mine was into all this,and played for me one evening one of the wierdest collections of acoustic,electric and Far eastern instruments all accompanied by strange vocal warblings and abstract lyrics to traditional melodies.Also mixed in were strains of actual folk and bluegrass.The band I remember as "The Holy Modal Rounders" and it seems like they actually had a song on the "Easy Rider" soundtrack.I have never been able to locate that album(not the Easy Rider soundtrack,The original HMR album),or find anyone else who remembers them.Anyone have a clue about the musicians,songs,album names involved with this band? |

22 Feb 99 - 01:29 AM (#59536) Subject: RE: The Holy Modal Rounders From: John Clark I recall the Holy Modal Rounders. Recorded slightly bent versions of folk tunes in the early '60's. Later recorded even more eccentric records, a sort of folk/psychelelic mix, later on. I think there was some overlapping personnel on both the Rounders recordings and recordings by Ed Sanders' band the Fugs. In 1967 I was living in New York and knew a piano player named Lee Crabtree who invited me along to a recording session with the Rounders one evening. It was a chaotic and idiosyncratic affair all around. If I recall correctly, the drummer was Sam Shepard, the playwright. I remember that one tune called for a chorus of football cheers and everyone who was hanging around the studio was drafted for it...my only vocal appearance on record. I think it was released under the title Indian War Whoop. I've never seen it or heard it since that evening. Anybody got a copy? |

Unfortunately very little of their music is available on CD. "Indian War Whoop" is available as an import. The only other one is the excellent "Have Moicy" album which include the Unholy Modal Rounders (Weber was not there) along with Michael Hurley and Jeffery Fredricks and the Clamtones. As rick said their first album was the best with just Webber on guitar and Stampfel on fiddle and banjo. I don't think I would have ever discovered or appreciated Charlie Poole without that first Rounders album. Stampfel is still recording and not too long ago released an album of strangely arranged old pop and country songs called "You Must Remember This." My favorite song was "The Theme From Goldfinger" done with clawhammer banjo, tuba, and steel drum. |

If not, try and get a copy of the vinyl LP. It's worth the search. There is also a Holy Modal Rounder discussion group at http://www.olywa.net/hilliard/hmr/ that includes a lot about their partner on "Have Moicy", Michael Hurley. The HMR really served as an inspiration to me in my younger days. Just like Earl, I discovered Charlie Poole through the HMR. I think they are truly unsung heroes. |

Ken Weaver, who was their buddy in the "Fugs" later shows up a lot in the work of Robert Crumb. (my favourite cartoonist of all time) He's portrayed as a troublesome nutbar..which kind of seems appropriate. Here in Toronto there lives a man named Fraser Mohawk who was a record producer in the states during the 60s and 70s who was part of the great "Rounders, Fugs" scene. Upon hearing the "Rounders" first album, I decided to take up the fiddle, reasoning that even if I sounded lousy, I could still be as good as Pete Stampfel. Over the years I've come to realise, that to be as bad as he was on that first album took a lot of skill! |

I know all this cause some film making friends and I are beginning a documentary project on the band starting in January. |

What a lot of fun! later, Jake and the Family Jewels and Elephant's Memory (before John Lennon) played for us. Does anybody remember them? |

It was wonderful! Stampfel still can't fiddle but somehow manages to put across the feeling of the music without playing the notes! And I decided I HAD to learn Griselda, bought the CD (I believe Have Moicy) and just spent two hours copying down all the words and then found them in the DT! Now I need to learn Bad Boy, which is NOT in the DT, nor are their words to Baltimore Fire. Oh yes, it wasn't a complete time warp. They did (by request from a packed house) Flop Eared Mule, and in addition to the now canonical words, sang Y2K, Y2K, Y2 Y2 Y2K. . . Aside from that (and their appearances) Iit could have been 1965. |

It's on Shyimmy Disc Records www.shimmydisc.com The liner notes give a lot of history of the Holy Modal Rounder years and the music is what you might expect from the Rounders 30 years later. My teenage son was bewildered by it all. I explained that that's what happens when you play bluegrass on acid. |

The first two are Electra Folk series and the third is Rounder Records. I met Steve Weber once, briefly, in the Village where he and Peter Stampfel were playing in two different clubs per night (requireing much running back and forth). One was the Black Crow or something like that. I knew Peter for many years in Milwaukee. He is originally from Waukeshaw (sp?). I learned to play the banjo by watching and listening to him when he played at The Unicorn on North Avenue. He had a group which included Rob Hunter and another person I can't recall. Peter Stampfel, Bill Ross, Billy Olsen, and Ken Haferman were (and probably still are) the best banjo (clawhammer) players I have ever had the pleasure to hear. One day Peter came by my apartment (when I lived in Chicago, Art...I use an old sock myself) and in a cryptic manner he handed me some items to keep for him..."I'll get them later" with a hint of there might NOT be a later. If you read these posts, Peter I still have "Exodus, a Record of Human Erosion" which is a collection of photographs of Paul Shuster Taylor and Dorothea Lange. However as Peter Stampfel recalls in his notes to the recent CD of Karen Dalton It's So Hard To Tell Who's Going To Love You The Best she could be quite difficult to work with:- "Like many instinctual musicians, Karen tended to freeze up in situations involving recording or playing for people in the industry. She did some harmonies with me on a Holy Modal Rouders album in 1972 and everyone had to wait over an hour for her to 'prepare' herself, a complicated procedure which concluded with her ripping the bathroom sink off the wall." Apparently Karen used to sing, but never recorded, a very powerful version of The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore. However "Last Round" contains several good tracks, eg "Romping Through the Swamp", "Sweet Willima", "Oriental Lady", "August 1967". The only other one I have is "Indian War Whoop" which I bought in London in 1997 but am not fussed about. In the 1st album, the references to glue sniffing and strutting their stuff (ie "I can't abide no woman, who goes round sniffing glue" and "The baby chickens don't take nothing, they just strut their stuff", both from the song "Blues in the Bottle") show that these expressions are not particularly modern. Does anyone know who wrote the original song "Blues in the Bottle" (and when) and if these expressions are contained in the original lyrics? "A dysfunctional family" as someone called them, yes, but interesting. It's put out by an outfit called Badbird who left no e-mail adress or street adress on the film, which I found at a used recording store. It includes the footage of the electric version of the band singing "Right String baby But The Wrong Yo-Yo" on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, their one Network TV appearence, which I hadn't seen since it was originally aired. ....so I guess you check out the website or still see if messyjesse (Jesse Fisher) who helped make the film, along withSam Wainwright Douglas, Francis Hatch and Paul Lovelace, still posts. In the olden days, there was Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber and they did wonderful, impossible, madcap things with old timey music. At one point they joined up with the Fugs, but then went their own ways. Eventually Stampfel and Weber went their own ways. The band expanded, bringing on board the likes of Sam Shepherd on drums. Robin Remaily (author of "Euphoria") got involved. They briefly moved to the Boston area and picked up Roger North (from Quill) and Teddy Deane (from Martin Mull's Magic Midget Band). Peter went back to NYC and started up groups like the Moray Eels and Unholy Modal Rounders. Weber and the rest of the band moved to Portland, OR and teamed up with Michael Hurley's pal, Jeffrey Frederick. When Weber fronted, they were the Holy Modal Rounders. When Jeff fronted (usually with his lady friend Jill Gross) they were the Clamtones. Things happened along the way, like the wonderous record "Have Moicy." A few HMR records. Jeff's "Spiders in the Moonlight." Weber and Stampfel are like some kind of strange physics model of a binary star system ever attracting and repulsing one another. Right now, they no longer even talk. He died 12 years ago. Jeffrey's widow, Kathryn Frederick started Frederick Productions and has been putting out CDs of Jeffrey's music (including a remastered and expanded, "Resurrection of Spiders in the Moonlight" never before on CD). She also put out "Steve Weber, Holy Modal Rounders B.C." documenting the Portland-based group. I met and married Kathryn and have been putting up videos of Jeffrey Frederick and his bands on You Tube, MySpace, Facebook. We hope to eventually put out a new, Have Moicy like CD with Stampfel's Rounders, Robin Remaily, Kevin "Bingo" Richey, and Teddy Deane. Meanwhile, the Freak Mountain Ramblers keep the old spirit alive here in Portland, including Teddy and Roger North and the amazing Dave Reisch, who played with 'em all and still does. I have stuff by all of these people and they certainly don't fit into any "weird offshpot of traditional folk" genre. The good captain was fairly weird, WMF was also pretty weird. Country Joe & The Fish were a left wing psychedelic acid rock band. Joe himself did do a lot of folk stuff - but not weird, or belonging to the same camp as WMF or that of Don Van Vliet. The Holy Modal Rounders remebered mainly for their contribution to Easy Rider soundtrack. |

Her lyrics are included in the songs covered by the H. M. Rounders. In light of which, Joe Offer has kindly indexed some H. M. Rounder threads, the index can be seen at the top of the Antonia Stampfel thread. I offer this suggestion. Joe is reluctant to include, in this index, songs that have been covered by many other acts/bands besides the H. M. Rounders. Maybe posts to this thread would be an appropriate place to: link to existing threads about songs/lyrics that have been covered by multiple bands, including the H. M. Rounders. or to: reference songs in that category, that perhaps don't have their own threads? Any other ideas? |
