Kris Kristofferson's new CD

Today happens to be Kris Kristofferson's 70th birthday. But the real reason for this thread is to mention his newest CD called "This Old Road". If you've ever enjoyed his music you might want to consider checking this one out. Some very fine songs. What I really appreciated was the production by Don Was. Let's face it. There are better singers out there than Kristofferson. But Don Was doesn't try to cover that up with a lot of studio tricks. Instead the production is rather stark. It's almost as if he says - Here's Kris - warts and all.

Many of the songs are just Kris and his guitar. From time to time there is a little bit of piano and bass by Was. Maybe two or three songs with Jim Kelter on drums and several songs with my home town boy Stephen Bruton on guitar and mandolin.

All in all a superior effort. It's worth a listen. Let me know what you think.

Johnny Cash sounded old and weary in his last couple of albums, but they sound great and are enjoyable; they say a lot about him. I have heard several songs off of the Kristofferson CD. I'm sorry to say he just sounds all worn out to me.

He may sound all worn out but he still can write.

My comment neither reflects on his writing skills, nor his past works, just his voice on this CD.

Right - his voice is - and always has been - pretty ragged. One of the points I was making is that no attempt was made to pretty it up. And for me - that served the songs better. I alway hate production jobs that wrap up a ragged voice in a choir and string section.
