Lyr/Chords: Ukulele Lady (G Kahn/R A Whiting)

Does anyone know the chords for this song? I've almost worn out my Arlo Guthrie CD trying to play along. I know, it ain't a deep, moving sort of song, but damn, it's catchy!

Bud, I've asked an old friend a thousand miles away to cough up the chords. He got them from an Australian published volume of material from the 30's, and re-published here in the 70's. Like a lot of songs from that period it was full of jazz chords which are an absolute pleasure to play or sing harmony with.

If you're playing in G may I suggest you try from the following list of possible chords - G G7 C Cm E7 Em B7 A7 D7 D. If you're not fussed about waiting for the published chords, the list of the ones I gave should pull you through for songs from that period. I can't recommend the Diminisheds and Minor Sevenths out of my head.

Regards
John

The Lyrics:

I saw the splendor of the moonlight on Honolulu Bay.
There's something tender in the moonlight on Honolulu Bay.
And all the beaches are full of peaches
who bring their ukes along.
And in the glimmer of the moonlight
they love to sing this song.

If you like a ukelele lady,
ukelele lady like-a-you.
If you want to linger where it's shady,
ukelele lady linger too.
If you kiss a ukelele lady
and she promise ever to be true,
and she sees another ukelele
lady fool around with you.

Maybe she'll sigh, maybe she'll cry,
maybe she will find somebody else
by and by-y-y to sing to.
When it's cool and shady
where the tricky-wicky-wack is woo,
if you like a ukelele lady,
ukelele lady like-a-you.

Thanks John. I tried a mixture of "Bessie Smith" chords, and couldn't get it. But I'll give these a go. I'd appreciate whatever you can give me.

Thanks

Ukelele Lady was a popular novelty song in the 1940's and, if my poor memory serves, was recorded by Bing Crosby and/or Bob Hope. There must be a Crosby song book out there somewhere.

I'm refreshing this, because I still can't figure out the chords. I was calling myself Bud, back then. I guess I just wasn't ready to reveal myself yet.

I've got the sheet music for it somewhere, if you'd like a scribe's version of the chords. Peter Sellers does, or did, an entertaining version of the tune, worth hearing.

I love this song. I heard someone Stump the Band with it on Johnny Carson and was appalled they didn't know it. Then again, I watched Ray Bradbury lose on you Bet Your Life through not knowing what post-prandial meant, and almost wept and the shattering of the idol...

From Jim Beloff's Jumpin Jim's Ukulele Gems--you'll probably find more intricate chords somewhere, but this is a relatively simple uke book.

UKULELE LADY
Lyric by Gus Kahn, Music by Richard A. Whiting (c)1925

If (F)you (Am)like-a (Dm)Ukulele (C7)Lady,
(F)Ukulele (Am)lady like-a (Dm)you(F)
If (Gm)you (C7)like to (Gm)linger where it's (C7)shady,
(Gm)Ukulele (C7)Lady linger (F)too
If you (Am)kiss a (Dm)Ukulele (C7)Lady
(F)While you promise (Am)ever to be (Dm)true(F)
And (Gm)she (C7)see an-(Gm)other Uku-(C7)lele
(Gm)Lady fool a-(C7)round with (F)you

(Bb)Maybe she'll sigh (F)Maybe she'll cry
(G7)Maybe she'll find somebody else
(C)By (Adim)and (C7)by (C7+5)to
(F)Sing (Am)to, (Dm)when it's cool and (C7)shady
(F)Where the tricky (Am)Wicky-Wackies (Dm)woo(F)
If (Gm)you (C7)like-a (Gm)Ukulele (C7)Lady
(Gm)Ukulele (C7)Lady like-a (F)you

Of course, the correct pronunciation is "oo-koo-lay-lay", but it doesn't work in the song!

Aloha,
Mark

This is written for standard uke tuning, G'-C-E-A, so F is a pretty common key...the F chord on the uke (soprano, concert, or tenor) is equivalent to C on the guitar minus the bottom two strings. The baritone uke is tuned D'-B-G-E, like the guitar (except the D is an octave higher). Confused yet?

Mark

Jim Kweskin had a second verse that goes something like this:

I long to linger in the moonlight on Honolulu Bay.
I've fond memories of the moonlight, although I'm far away
Someday I'm goin'
Where breezes are blowin'
And lips are made to kiss
And in the glimmer of the moonlight
I'll hear the song I miss

(chorus)

Love it!

I prefer using G chord patterns (usually capoed up).

If (G)you (Bm)like-a (Em)Ukulele (D7)Lady,
(G)Ukulele (Bm)lady like-a (Em)you.(G)
If (Am)you (D7)like to (Am)linger where it's (D7)shady,
(Am)Ukulele (D7)Lady linger (G)too.
If you (Bm)kiss a (Em)Ukulele (D7)Lady
(G)While you promise (Bm)ever to be (Em)true,(G)
And (Am)she (D7)see an-(Am)other Uku-(D7)lele
(Am)Lady fool a-(D7)round with (G)you,

(C)Maybe she'll sigh,
(G)Maybe she'll cry,
(G7)Maybe she'll find somebody else
(D)By (Adim)and (D7)by (D7+5)
To (G)Sing (Bm)to, (Em)when it's cool and (D7)shady

I revived this because I have a different way of playing it than the others above.
This is how the Maple Leaf Champions Jug Band do it. We do another verse too, but this'll give you the chords. I play the uke for this song and in the line that goes:
"If (C*) you (Em) like a (Am) ukelele (C) lady,
(C*) Ukelele (Em) lady like-a-(Am)you.(C)"
I use C*-5433, Em-0432, Am-2000, C-0003

I goofed a couple of chords and there is no way to edit, so:

(Am) And all the beaches are full of peaches
(Em) who bring their ukes a(Am)long.
(C) And in the glimmer (G7) of the (C) moonlight
they love to (D7) sing this (G7) song.

I s'pose you could get away with how I did it above, but I like this better.
