Tech: Sound System For One Performer

I guess I have a regular gig now. I am playing down at the Mermaid Tavern in Hagatna, Guam, on Thursday nights. (If you bring in a print out of this thread I'll buy you a beer. - Ha ha)

Anyway the point is that I need some kind of little sound system. My years in Roll & Go Have left me with a horror of wires and heavy sound boards and monitors and mikes and all. It used to take two hours to set up for a performance. Ugh!

I want simple, easy to manage, and best of all compact. Oh, and good sound, of course. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

I've heard a few friends using the Fender Passport portable PA which is small & easy for one feller to pack & carry. The speakers & mixer attach for packing into one item to heave around. You can get tripod stands for the speakers. They make more than one model. Sound seems decent enough.
I have what I call my "chick pa."   It's actually a Roller Rogue. It's a speaker with the mixer built in, & has wheels & a telescopic handle for a foo-foo gal like me to be able to easily roll it. I have two of them for when I need more mics plugged in. For small venues only.

Hi Naemanson,

You might like to have a look at the Peavey Escort. It's available on the internet, from Peavey, and also (usually) Ebay.

Good sound, easily set up, and comes with speaker stands and one mike with stand.

It all packs down into a tough, egg shaped unit which has suitcase type wheels, so you only have to lift it in and out of the car, or on stairs.

Plenty space for extra mikes etc. in padded compartments.

I use one myself, and I'm very satisfied with it.

I've been very happy with my Fender Passport 250 and have used it in all sorts of venues. It has always performed well, even outside. It only has four inputs (plus 2 stereo inputs that I have used in a pinch, but you have to do a lot of adjusting). It's very easy to adjust and tweak your sound. For one person, or a duo, it works great. If you need more inputs you can plug in another mixer, which I have done, but just using the basic Fender Passport (250 model) I have successfully managed to get a good sound from a four piece group.

Well, I have one of these Roland's (see below) and I just love it. I've used it in coffeehouses, large listening rooms and small pubs and it is just great. It has it's limitations - not a ton of bass without the additional bass box, but my ideal is going unplugged and this little system is a nice step beyond that without getting too crazy. I love the carrying case and the fact that you can mount it on a pole; and, when I use my "real" sound system I can run my guitar through the Roland and the Roland into the Yamaha mixer and get a great guitar sound. If you're ever going to need a big system then this is not your thing; but, if you only need small or want something more convenient to take to smaller rooms - then this is your baby.
Hope it helps. Cheers.

Big Sound in a Compact Package
Talk about impressive. The AC-60 is a marvel of amplifier design, using the latest DSP technology to deliver a pure, rich acoustic sound with projection far beyond its compact size. This stereo acoustic amp (30w x 2) offers brilliant stereo/multi-band chorus including a new "wide" mode, plus shimmering reverb tailored specifically for acoustic guitar. And if it's more low-end you crave, the AC-60 even gives you a Subwoofer output.

A Marvel of Convenience
The dual-channel AC-60 offers both a Guitar channel and a Mic/Line channel with Phantom Power. This makes it the perfect companion for coffeehouses and small club gigs. The Guitar channel gives you a choice between piezo and magnetic pickup inputs, plus powerful Anti-Feedback controls. Rounding out this package is a Mute switch for silent tuning and a Stereo Line Out for connection to mixing consoles and PA systems.

Thanks for the input, gang. I'll have to check out the local music shops, both of them, and check e-Bay. It's hard to get things here in Guam, especially if they have to be shipped in from elsewhere.

I continue to use the Bose PAS and never fail to receive comments on the excellent sound and clarity of the lyrics.

There are many what I call singer/songwriter amps available. They have two channels and usually a 10" speaker and sometimes a tweeter. That leaves you the need for mics, cords, and stands. Makes for a fairly compact set up.

Gee, DW, that seems like an alien contraption but what I read in some of the websites agrees with you. Man, I'd love to get one of those. I better start saving the bucks.

Those Bose PAS systems work well if you use mics that aren't too sensitive. I've twice been in situations where they needed to work with a large diaphragm condenser mic (once with AKG, once with AT) and the PAS systems feb back severely. They had to be moved far forward and in one case we could never get the volume above 1 with out feedback. They are great systems but they have characteristics that must be accounted for.

In my retirement, I've begun working in a local guitar shop (Stars Guitars) where, among other things, we sell acoustic amps. I've had a chance to work with quite a few popular amp models but the absolute best in terms of both sound quality and portability are the Schertler products.

The Schertler David amp is amazing. Input for acoustic guitar pickup and condenser (XLR with phantom power) or dynamic mic. Eighty watts, bi-amped, built in spring reverb, controls for each channel, and a sound that will fill even the corners of any room such as coffee house or medium sized church. And it weighs 20 pounds.

The Schertler Unico has three channels, 180 watts and weighs 32 pounds.

There is also a bass unit that doubles as a stand for the vertical pole that may be used to elevate either the Unico or David amps.

We've had people come in to by electronic tuners and walk out with one of these amps. One fellow from Chicago wanted to buy a very nice guitar with a built in acoustic pickup. We had him try the guitar through the Schertler David to hear how it sounded plugged in and he wound up passing on the guitar and taking the amp home.

Everyone who hears these amps either buys one or wishes for one. No exceptions.

I don't mean for this to sound like a sales pitch, it's not. It's just that these are soooo good. It's like braging about a new guitar or something.

I have recently changed to a Yamaha StagePAS 300 "mini-PA" for small to medium gigs.

300W, 4 mono and 2 stereo inputs, reverb, and everything packs into two small speaker enclosures. Excellent sound to my ears and relatively inexpensive.

Inexpensive is good. Quality is good. I'm learning a lot in this thread. Keep it up, gang.

I've been looking at eBay every time I check this thread to see see what these units are selling for there. There were two of the Bose units. I put one on my watch list and it disappeared from eBay. I put a low bid on the next one to make sure it couldn't disappear. It did. Apparently the seller was, in eBay's opinion, a low life who cannot be allowed to sell on eBay.

The hunt goes on.
