BS: Mudcat Tavern & Barbeque Summer '06

On the top half of the globe, summer has arrived, so fire up the Barbie (jees, I hate that doll), sling another bottle in the cooler and pull up a lawn chair... the Mudcat Tavern has moved outside for the duration (to avoid the smell coming from the jello pit mostly) and you are all invited to a 'Bring and Burn' Barbeque in the garden.

I'm sitting here with an ice cold pint of milk and a mushroom/pepper kebab...

Only rule is NO SPORTS TALK!! You want to talk sports, you go find a sports site!

Now.. where did I put that extra thick sweater?

There is a shady spot but it's right over there by the restroom windows... you may find it a bit .... fragrant.

Still, the smell of burning sausages should cover that up nicely.

Burning sausages? would never happen if my mate MMario was cook. Are they Cumbeland sausages by any chance? mmmmm very partial to Cumberland sausage I am, and they are hard to find here in Nova Scotia.

Dave - I'll try top bring back a couple coils of cumberland from this weekend - but I'm also going to petition the queen for a sturgeon or three; they were still decent eating size in 1585.

Thanks MMario MMate give the Queen my love and here's a little song fer ya .
The Virgin Sturgeon

Caviar comes from the virgin sturgeon,
Virgin sturgeon is a fish.
Virgin sturgeon needs no urgin'
That's why caviar is my dish.

I fed caviar to Louisa,
She's my honey tried and true.
Now Louisa needs no urgin'
I recommend caviar to you.

I fed caviar to my grandpa'
He was a man of ninety-three;
Screams and cries were heard from grandma,
Grandpa had her up a tree.

I put caviar in the punchbowl,
That livened up the party, sure.
What am l doing stripped down naked ?
Thought these girls were sweet and pure.

I fed caviar to my sweetheart,
She always did it cheerfully.
Now she does it with a vengeance,
Oh, my God, it's killing me.

Yours, Aye. Dave

Someone bring the humane bug zapper too please... just been divebombed by a moth the size of a Lancaster Bomber... seriously... it was huge by moth standards!!! And no, I checked, it's not a Gipsy moth. I had to wrestle it out of the jaws of the Raven kitty, but it's flown off into the night now and seems to be OK.

(Any entymologists out there... it was about 3 cm nose to tip, fore and under wings mottled in shades of brown and black, like bark. Smooth antennae that rested parallel to wing, rather than back over head. Thorax was rusty brown colour but that could be where the cat got it, light brown abdomen. Head was fuzzy and set under rather than on the end).

Raven is miffed. I may have to let him catch a sausage.

I am not sure her expectations are realistic. She has been dropping hints that I am to start teaching her how to sing. Does she want to sing like me in 30 easy lessons?? She also thinks "somebody" ought to write original material. d-uh.

I'll pitch in the potato salad. Just a simple, old-fashioned potato salad is really nice at a BBQ: Potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, chopped celery, scallions and flat-leaf parsley, mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Okay? Well then, I'm off to the farmer's market for ingredients.

OM, there's a creek out the back but make sure you put them in upstream of the squid - he's taking a holiday too.

Happy Canada Day to the Canucks, and Independence Day to the Yanks.... Pull up a chair, lay back and kick off the cares of the day. Can someone put a match to that citronella candle there? The sunny weather means the outhouse is buzzin' up a storm.

Can someone call the 'Mello Jello Pits Maintenance' guy please? Whilst we're outside we should take this opportunity to get that thing serviced.... Bert's card should still be good.

Now... who's for a game of 'who can snooze the longest'? (Not breaking my own "no sports" rule here: If a dog can do it, it's not a real sport).

Okay, okay, I can take a hint. . .I got out the mower and I knocked down the tall grass around the hackberry over to the side of the barbecue area. Haul a few of those lawn chairs over and you'll find the shade is quite comfortable. I'm sorry but I'm going to leave the dogs' wading pool there, it gets too warm when it's in the direct sun. They won't bother you too much when it's this hot out.

I have some Copper River salmon to add to the lineup, and I make some pretty good Country Style ribs (it's the homemade sauce).

Oh--you might not want to leave the meat out unattended--the dogs might snatch it unless it's already on the grill (they'll stay away from the heat). And they're fast--you won't get it back once they have it. Even if you still wanted it. . .

I've been craving a good hot dog, grilled to crispiness on the outside, yummy mustard, sweet pickle relish, ketchup, some kraut on top....

I *don't* especially like the taste of meat, which is why when I think I'm craving a "burger", I generally wind up with the veggie variety, because what I'm actually craving is the combination of condiments, lettuce, tomato, etc on a nice toasty bun!

An important exception to my "take it or leave it" attitude towr=ards meat occurs on my annual visits to my family in England, where myself and my children all become devout eaters of sausages (and yes, the Cumberland sausages are something to write home about, no condiments need apply!)...I'll be there in less than a week, and am already getting excited about the real ales, the sausages, the old friends, the morris dancing, and even a little about the medieval conference at which I'm giving a paper (although that comes considerably further down the list than the real ales...)!

I agree Giok. Grilling a proper cut of meat is all that need be done. Of course, the more you can slather on a hot dog, the better. Takes the taste of the "parts" away. Not metally, but taste bud wise, anyway.

Now, who wants a small bowl of my seafood chowder? Baby clams, scallops, lobster (doubled up and the shrimp omitted), haddock, potatoes, onions, butter, and made with, of course, skim milk... got to be health concious, eh?

My puppy has run out of slush... where's the Margueritta boy?

I'm hiding out here so's I don't have to look at the extra half inch of loft hatch that is bound to be sticking out ~ the old one fell off on Saturday, so I made a new one today. I measured, I measured again, I cut... but still it looks bigger than the old one.... Hmmm... hope the old one was a bit small....

It's the going down to the cellar to get the big ladder to get to the loft that bugs me. I can't hang the door with the loft ladder hanging through the hatch and I can't get to the hatch without the loft ladder....

Bring me more Slush!

BTW, the Kimmeridgian epoch is named after Kimmeridge, Dorset, where the Pureck hills meet the sea. The whole bay, 50 odd miles across, is fameous for dinosaur bones, and is now a world heritage site, and very pretty. There is only one question though...

Can any of these time travellers go back and get us some dinosaur steaks? The trick is to stick the marinade onn before you come back, so they're absorbing the flavour for 150 million years!

AH, but mine was marinated then smoked over alder and it started out as Copper River King salmon! It's the amount of natural red that gives the flavor that huge boost! I think perhaps yours is reflecting those great salmon oils in the juice that form a skin* on the fillet and lighten the surface when it has finished cooking.

Hairy Lobster
Seriously though I did hear of the hairball in lobsters before, and it was theorised that pieces of cowhide complete with hair were being used in lobster pots as bait. It has the advantage of lasting longer than fishy baits. This meant that lobsters ingested the hair along with the hide.
Could account for the fisherman who said, "I haven't seen hide nor hair of a lobster all day"!

I am horribly late I know, but I just got back from baking (and by that I mean it in the global warming warning kind of way) at a 4 day (mostly) dulcimer festival, in which we tent camped, and I could really use copious quantities of anything iced & alcoholic (tiny umbrella optional). I stopped on my way and picked up some premium vanilla ice cream, hand-picked, homegrown strawberries and a crate of containers of whipped cream. What you do with the individual components is totally up to you...

Cephalopods are not struck on lettuce cos it is like a kick in the tentacles to a carnivorous jet propelled beast.

Congrats to Lady Penelope; love is a wonderful thing. dishwashers are, too.

There was a thread about handfasting a year or so ago when Micca and CatsPHiddle did it.... but basically it's a public announcement that you and your partner are going to live together as a 'married' couple without the fuss of all that church mularkey, much like 'jumping the broomstick'.

I remember Rolling Rock... I think it's what got me into drinking real ale. And yes.. the best birthday present I ever bought myself was a dishwasher. Boy has THAT ever been value for money!

Good for you for quitting the band, for making that decision... just don't go filling the gap immediately or you could end up worse off! Take a few months to kick back, consolidate your position and make your own music for yourself.

Now hand over those beers and get me another pool boy... there ain't no such thing as Monday morning here!
