Buskers Top 10

Hello

I have not been busking for about 5 years, although I have in years gone by travelled from Dublin to Kalamata by busking. ( and back again) This summer I have decided to take my bicycle and my somewhat dusty mandolin and busk to Brest. ( Which is right at the end of Brittany in France) I am making a list of Markets that lay along the Nantes Brest canal, where I can stop for a play.

So what I want to know from all you other buskers or non buskers, what would you play on such a trip, or as a passer by what would you like to hear?

There are a lot of festivals in Brittany this time of year.Probably already started.Some of the musicians taking part you will find playing in the bars and cafés afterwards.Something informal usually happens,way into the night most times.You could sit in,as it were.Also,you will find that in some small towns,villages etc,that there will be a Fête going on,with BBQs and roast whatever being prepared,could be a good place to set up.As to what to sing....just go with the flow!Just do what you do best.

For solo mandolin, I'd learn some tunes with a lot of double stops. I like to play LITTLE DARLING PAL OF MINE. BILE THEM CABBAGE is a cliche to mando players, but it's a good solo tune. People also like tunes that they can identify. A few years back ASHOKAN FAREWELL was a good tune. I have a medley of 3 Breton tunes that work well, but I don't have titles for them. Dear Gargoyle

I find your post most offencive. Do you have a problem with Gypsies? Or just with the world. Where you come to conclusion that I am a gypsy is beyond me as to be a gypsy one has to be born into Romany familly which I was not.
I do not consider busking to be take take take, as a sucsesfull street performer you need to give give give.
Neither do I agree that that a song that works in Coventry will not work else where) There are some songs that can cut through place race time of day and possibly even plain predudice such as your own.

If I have not listed my top ten it is as I say because I have not been busking for over 5 years (infact it is nearer ten)

I object to being called "little busky" as I am 41 years old and about 11 stone.

So if you just want to be nasty please piss off, if you havn't got anything helpfull to say, shut up.

Thanks for the tip, Twinkle Twinke little star is also a French Song called Ah! Vous diria-je maman.

But I think I might stick to the kind of Celtic tradition.
