BS: Mrs is poorly:-( Good wishes please!

06 Jul 06 - 04:20 PM (#1777625)
Subject: BS: Mrs is poorly:-) Good wishes please!
From: Dave the Gnome

Mrs Gnome, aka Elaine, is very poorly in hospital with pancreatitis. Now, if it was me I could understand it. After all with millions of units of alcohol my liver and pancreas should have given up years ago. But poor Elaine has one or two units a week:-(

The culprit in this case is gallstones. She has suffered from them for a year or so. Why the hell they had to wait till now to do something is another matter but, once the pancreatitis is passed they will whip out the gallbladder.

Keep the thoughts and good wished pouring towards Manchester and lets hope she will be out soon.

Many thanks

Cheers

Dave the Gnome

Ah... gallstones. They will have her fit in no time. Gallbladder removal, in most cases, if far less intrusive than it was even recently. Why, she'll be home fetching you pints sooner than you know.

All the best for a speedy and easy recovery.

Dear Dave
My thoughts are very much with you both at the moment, it's a nasty one, not always blamed on the drink, saw a lot of cases of tea total suffers. Make sure you ask to see a Dietician before she leaves hospital, there are a lot of foods to avoid, a good diet and a three month levels check and she will be fighting fit.

Chin up mate and thinking about you.

Hi Dave, best wishes and a speedy recovery to the Fair Elaine whom I remember from my brief occupancy of your sofa when I visited Swinton once. I hope she is in fine fettle after they "Keyhole" her GB.
In that euphoric (and uninhibited) drug induced period when I became concious after they had removed mine, I noticed (as you would) that I had a rather prominent scar about 8 inches long on my abdomen (they had warned me that, if necessary, when they looked with the keyhole they might have to use more traditional extraction methods) I loudly said to the surgeon, who was checking me out, "if thats the Keyhole it must have been Some F***ing Key" he fell about laughing!!!
Wish Elaine all the best from me.

Thanks for the beer, Paul:-) The hatters mild is nice as well.

Thanks again for all the good wishes folks. Latest update. She was knackered this morning. For some reason it was decided to put her in a different ward. At 1:30 this morning! She isn't in as much pain so it could be settling down. We certainly hope so becuse they say if it settles they will keyhole her for the gallbladder op. If it doesn't they will need to open her up a bit more to take away part of the bile duct to unblock it:-(

Interesting comment by th ehospital docs yesterday. They asked how long she had had the stones and what her own doctor had said. She replied that they had found them a year ago and our GP had just said 'let's see what happens'. Hospital doc was none too pleased and commented that this is what happens when they are not removed!

Cheer and thanks once more.

Geez Dave.....Tell Elaine to whack her Doc upside the head and get on with getting on!!!

Sorry I haven't been around and missed this but better late than never! I am sending my best thoughts to you both and hope that Elaine gets the right treatment from here on.

Wife Karen's best gall stone story------------Karen is a Histotech (makes slides from tissue samples) and when she was in school the instructor in one class was passing around various parts and pieces. She passed around a sample jar of gallstones and finally someone asked why they were not in formalin......just in the jar dry. She said it was a "trade secret" but gallstones were really a taste treat and she promptly opened the jar and popped a couple in her mouth!

The class kinda' gave a collective shock reaction and the teacher cracked up as she had expected and now gotten the precise reaction she expected. Gallstones look just like malted milk balls.... which is what she had put in the jar.

Wanna' here about the 9 pound uterus that came through the lab last week? Probably not huh? We have some wonderful dinner conversations I tell ya'!!! After 20 years they don't bother me anymore but at first I figured marrying Karen would keep my weight down as her stories were a bit stomach churning.

Again, best to you both old friend!

Spaw

Latest update.

She is still very uncomfortable but the pancreatitis seems to be abating a little. They are letting her eat and drink a little now but she still gets waves of pain and some nausea.

They have indicated she is on the mend and an emergency operation is now unlikely. Looks like they will discahrge her when the pancreas is clear and book her in for the gall bladder op soon after.

Keep the prayers and good wishes coming. I know they are helping.

She seemed a bit better tonight. Rang me during the extra time of the World cup final to ask what was going on:-) Must be either getting better or bored out of her mind!

Hope she gets a bette rnights sleep tonight. She has a drug/alcohol abuser facing her now who is very disruptive and shouts, wanders and makes a general nuisance of herself all night. When I was there earlier her bloke was there. The curtains went round the bed and soon cigarette smoke could be seen rising from behind them. Some people don't deserve health care.

Good to hear that Elaine is improving. I had mine out almost 20 years ago. Once I found out what was wrong, I managed by watching my diet. But almost a year of eating bland white food (boiled chicken, mashed potatoes without butter, bananas & applesauce) convinced me to have the surgery. I was only in the hospital for 3 days (short for back then) and I drove myself to the doctor's office to get the stitches out. Good luck, Elaine. Just do it and get it over with.

All my best to her Dave, perhaps she will eventually not need any work on the gallbladder. I had a particularly bad bout at one time and was in hospital, pacing back and forth on enough morphine to drop a stevedore.

I was told I was loaded with gallstones and the gallbladder would have to come out. As I was just in for surgery a couple of weeks earlier, I wasn't keen for another go, so I declined and went home after a couple of days.

Not exactly sure what happened, although I did modify my diet for awhile, but that was almost 20 years ago and I've never had a ripple since.

Dave good to see she's on the mend.

In regard to that one facing your wife, just quietly say to one of the staff that possibly unscripted medication was possibly being taken, which is probably the truth. That always makes them sit up and listen, because if the young lady was to become ill and bloods showed up other chemical sustances there would be hell to pay for the Health Trust, doubt the consultant is aware of what is going on there.

Just rung her and the good news is they will let her home tomorrow or Wednesday provided she continues to improve. They will then get her back to schedule the op within the next 8 weeks.

I guess she will have to watch her diet till then. She has been on 'Slimfast' smoothies for a couple of weeks. Anyone know if they would help or hinder btw?

Better still the disruptive influence across the ward is being moved today. Hope they don't get another one in!

Thanks for all the kindness and support. I will let you know how things are going.

Great to hear, Dave.

The only juice I could drink after pancreatitis was clear apple juice. As stated above, NO fats of any kind. I was able to handle clear broths (but they were all cooked and allowed to sit overnight in the fridge so the fats that rose to the top could be skimmed of) and some crackers. Gradually and in small amounts I had nibbles of this and that. The process took weeks until I was eating 'normally' again.

Any alcohol will irritate the pancreas.

Right. The good news. The did the laperscopic version so there was no need to open her more than necessary. The bad news - her blood pressure is very low ( 87/45) so until it gets higher they will keep her in:-(

More good news. She was sat up and very sore but in good spirits.

More bad news. As I was on my way to visit her I got a call from my Step to say my Mum was in hospital.

More good news. Mum is out - she was in 4 hours and refered to the GP unit.

DtG - Some info about gall stones (not gall bladder disease which is different).

I went in for an ultrasound because they thought I had kidney stones. Nope! I guess I passed the damn thing by drinking volumes of water, however...

They found a gallstone as big as a baseball!

When will I go in for surgery, says I.

Oh no, says the nurse, we don't do that anymore.

Oh, what do you do then? Blast it with a laser or something?

No, funny thing about gallstones. Now that we have ultrasound, we know that everyone has gallstones. The big ones are no problem. Its the little ones that get stuck in the duct that cause the pain. You have nothing to worry about. You're gallstone is very big.

You mean I get to walk around knowing I have a gallstone the size of a baseball inside of me?

Yup, she says.

I hope your family will soon return to good health. In the scheme of things, gallstones are the least of our worries.

Maybe I was too hasty. Remember what I said about her fetching your beer? Mention that to her and it might help to raise her blood pressure.

Sorry... couldn't resist. Hope she gets better real soon.

Sorry I haven't posted, but I have been sending good thoughts and thanksgivings for a complete recovery. Good to know she's done with the surgery. Will continue to send energy and healing thoughts. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Frankly Dave......Or Davely Frank.........It all sounds pretty good! After all, your Mum might have had the clap or something and that would be bad news.....or at least pretty weird!!!

Keep them all on course and soon you and the hospitals will be parting company!

True, spaw, very true;-)

Well, - She's home! :-D

Very sore and poorly but happy that she is out of hospital. They reckon a couple of weeks rest and she will be herself again.

Thanks again one and all.

Last (hopefuly!) update.

Thanks to some excellent care from the hospital, a bit of help from me and the family and a lot of good vibes from here she is now moving about quite happily. I am having one hell of a time to stop her doing things she is not supposed to but I am winning so far:-)

Cheers

You probably don't know me and I don't know you but I feel I do know about pancreatitis as I was struck with it after Warwick Festival last year. The hospital have no idea what caused it, it wasn't drink or gallstones but I landed in hospital for 5 months including 29 days in intensive care. I had my pancreas removed in November and then started to get better. I am not writing this to give doom and gloom but the opposite, although I was very poorly at the time I am now well on the road to recovery and was even able to attend Warwick this year. I'm so glad that Elaine is now feeling better. she can only go from strength to strength now.
All the best
Janet

Dave, this is great news!!!! Thank you for the updates! May every day bring better healthy and more energy.

Janet, glad that you are doing better too. Pncreatitis is very serious stuff. Glad you're out to the hospital on the mend too!
