BS: The perfect vacation

I was telling my sister that my idea of the perfect vacation is one where I don't have to pack any socks.

There are other elements too. It's great to have my wife along, a nice location, some good food from time to time, and music of course. But beach or mountain - I'm not picky. But I also want a little time to read a good book and sleep late.

What's important to you?

Move to the country where all that good stuff like clean air, birds, trees and quiet are.

Then stay home!

A nice beach, warm water, and a good bar, with decent music!

Depends upon the type of vacation I'm seeking at any given time. I'm a perpetual traveler. Sometimes I like just sitting and relaxing in a beautiful spot. Sometimes I like to cover a lot of territory, and move every couple of days. Sometimes I actually move to a beautiful/exotic (to me) location. Sometimes I want to hit a new city and do the arts, culture & cuisine thing.

Just depends upon my mood, the amount of time and resources available, and whether I want to travel alone or with a companion I get along with (I do both).

Actually Wes, we're generally just happy to have enough money to leave the house for awhile!!!

I don't fly so it has to be a place that I can drive to. I love beautiful scenery, either mountains, lakes, or rocky coastlines. I stay in the boondocks and away from urban centers. I also want to hear good Folk Music every night. What is the place that meets all these criteria ? The answer is Nova Scotia and particularly Cape Breton Island.

Rabbi-Sol,
we have all that in Maine and I already live there!

I don't take many vacations, really, more just long weeks. Love to spend time with my friends in Vermont and love having them come stay in Maine with me. I also have family in Arizona and like going out there, but I mind the heat so only go during "winter". I'm also a big fan of Quebec (City and province). But there isn't one specific thing I look for in a vacation destination. It's whatever strikes me at the moment, or if there is something specific to see that appeals to me. I'm a very big hockey fan and enjoy traveling to the cities that have AHL teams to go to games, for instance.

My annual vacation is to the FSGW Getaway. A weekend of warm memories and cold toes followed by a week of insanity at my house. As with all vacations, I am always glad to get back to "normal".

I had this terrible problem when I was younger... everytime I packed to go anywhere, I would end up with 15 pairs of knickers and no socks, or 15 pairs of socks and no knickers.

In the end I stopped wearing socks.

My perfect vacation would be a cool ancient farmhouse, near a wild beach, with a hobby store, a book store and a chocolate factory within driving distance. There'd be a good friend nearby to take me out on his motorbike along one of the finest roads in the country and some fantastic places to eat on the way.

Now all I need is the £3million to buy the perfect farmhouse and I'm all set!

It has been so long since I've really had a vacation, my son was in about 4th grade, and now he is a sophomore in college! I went to Hawaii, Big Island, stayed with friends in Kona and then rented a car and drove completely around the island, staying in Hilo on the other side and then returning to Kona. My favorite vacations have been the winter-getaways to some place tropical when it is terribly cold in Montana and I've been able to go south to sunny beaches, preColumbian pyramids, tropical jungles. I've been able to have five of those types of vacations, but it has been a long time.
I was just thinking about how I really need a vacation when I logged on to Mudcat and saw this thread. I used to have a job that included visiting Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Rocky Mountain National Park, San Diego, San Francisco, the Queen Mary in Long Beach, so trips were work/sightseeing at the same time. Now I'd like a couple of weeks when I just don't have to do anything.

The perfect vacation is one that someone else pays for.
