raggle taggle - watch your hooklines!

I was driving down the M5 on Friday on the way to Priddy FF, and all these really smart caravans were heading south west alongside of me.

And then I thought about that poor lady in the song sleeping 'in a cold open field along with the raggle taggle gypsies.'

Could her fate have been avoided? after all, the raggle taggles sound like a right bunch of scufflers - what if the song writer had chosen a different hookline

she could have gone with the giggle gaggle gypsies (superficial, but terrific fun at parties!)

or she could have gone with the wiggle waggle gypsies (not relaxing company - but everybody gives them a clear berth on the motorway)

the niggle naggle gypsies (irritating, but at least the toilets are clean)

the doggle diggle gypsies (affectionate, they leap up and lick your face)

the wibble wobble gypsies (overweight, but generous portions at meal times)

Instead there she is for all eternity 'in a cold open field'.

the moral of this tale, is think before you lyricise, you know it makes sense.

Ah But THOSE Raggle Taggle Gypsies were 'proper ones , NOT Irish Tinkers or Didecois , or (even worse) Caravan Club Members !!

No it's a fantasy, but an uncomfortable one for the lady involved.

She could just as easy gone off with the interplanetary Schnuegel Fluegel Gypsies (North European in origin; great fitted kitchens -perhaps too much pickled fish in the diet)

Or the Bigle Bogle Gypsies.

Biggle baggle = Gypsies with lots of bulky luggage.

Tickle tackle = also fun at parties.

Pickle packle = fruit preserving Gypsies.

The worst are the ziggle-zaggles: not a straight one amongst them.

Snuffy, you could be confusing them with the Bigger-Bugger Gypsies

In fact they were known, as the Bigger-Bugger Gypsies OH!

Prittle prattle = Gypsy tale-tellers

Mingle mangle = Gypsy rugby scrum participants

Tingle tangle = incompetent Gypsy electrictions

Fiddle faddle = trivial types

Oddle boddle = = funny shaped Gypsies

This is such fun.
Cheers, Joy

You witnessed a group tourists; they purchased a caravan trip in the wagons.

The complaint should not be on the adjectives of the original-folk-song but on your use of the GYPSIES. (If you were a prolific reader of the MudChat threads you would understand and feel empathy for The Roma's that are so unjustly wronged because of stereotypical labels and a history of graft, theft, child-slavery, wrongly attributed to these Noble Folk.

Today, we should substitute "buttskey watch-kie Buskero" so begger's-tips are adjusted in relation to the hiney-whiny-ratio.

its only a BS thread if you decide that folksongs are a closed book. Somebody wrote them back in the mists of time and that was it. that's how they stay.

why shouldn't the whale get caught in the Greenland Whale fishery, why shouldn't the girl survive her night out in The Banks of the Ohio, why shouldn't Frankie shoot at Johnny and miss completely?

As for the Wibble Wobble Gypsies, She runs off with them, develops a weight problem, there is a climactic fight in the overweight gypsy encampment, lunch boxes flash in the romantic campfire light, passions explode, guitars strum, and the lady runs off into the darkness, later to emerge as Slimmer of the Year at Weightwatchers-oh!

Showing at a folkclub near you...
