BS: Last Days of Tony B. Liar?

Are we seeing similar symptoms to the last days of that evil woman Thatcher?

The "Home Information Packs" central to the "reform" of conveyancing seem to be in trouble.

The £1,000 per head Identity cards seem to be in trouble.

The government and the courts are at loggerheads over human rights.

A left-winger has announced his intention to stand as next Labour leader.

And a disturbing TV documentary has challenged the entire basis of government "engagement" witht he muslim community, alleging that it plays to (relatively extreme) "political Islamists", wrongly treating them as mainstream, and largely ignoring the up to 80% of British Muslims who are Sufis. Apparently the foreign office is in thrall to a political adviser on Muslim affairs whose religion I do not know but whose name certainly sounds as if he might be Muslim himself.

80% may be moderate but I doubt very much they're Sufis. Sufis have always been a very small minority.

Tony is definitely well past his sell by date. However, it seems likely that when he finally gets round to going, Gordon Brown will take over.

Out of the frying pan...

Disastrous idea - Gordon Brown. Might as well hand over the country to the Tories - restart the the war in Ireland, close what manufacturing industry there still is, and shit on the carpet.

Gordon just hasn't got the chutzpah to get elected.

the whole thing about Tony is that most Tories wish their daughters would bring home a nice young man like that. He's the Daniel O'Donnel of British politics. Tories vote for Blair.

Gordon Brown has virtues but as for fiscal rectitude he appears not to have read Keynes.

The trouble with elections is, whoever you vote for, the Government always gets in. And we end up having to do the best we can, despite the Government's efforts.

Brown would be no better than Blair. Neither would Cameron. Different, but no better.

Vote for "None of the above".

Trouble with this Labour Party, or whatever it's calling itself this week, is that it still has to rely on Trade Union contributions, and Scottish voters for their existence. This accounts for 1. Fatso Prescott or Deputy Dawg as I like to call him, and 2. Gordon Brown, Ian McCartney, John Reid and Alistair Darling, along with countless other Scots hangers on. So even if we don't get Gordon Brown next, and I hope we don't due do the total success of his charisma bypass operation, we will still get someone representing a working class constituency. Which will almost certainly mean another Scot, even Sedgefield Man himself is a heavily disguised Scot.
Now as a Scot myself, I am not averse to the next PM being of the Jimmy persuasion, but I have noticed an anti Scottish backlash in the corridors of power, and I feel that whoever turns out to be the next leader, if he is as I predict a Scot, it will be a gift to the other political parties.
So we will have the Two Ronnies scenario with TB and GB sitting side by side, with Gordon saying "Well it's goodbye from me, and it's goodbye from him"
Lib Dem coalition to form the next government then?

Richard Bridge says "Gordon Brown has virtues but as for fiscal rectitude he appears not to have read Keynes."

Having been a student of economics and (more pertinently) economic history for thirty odd years, I have long believed that there are only two believable economic theories that actually work in the light of empirical evidence.

1.   Keynesianism as propounded by the great man himself. The basic theory propounded by JMK was exactly that - basic. It has been taken up, bastardised, turned around, respelled and finally diced by politicians and economists since, as for example in "Full Employment" (the maximum employment an economy can sustain at a given point in time - unless I am mistaken, which is always a possibility). But the raw basic Keynesian theory that the economy constitutes three parts, one of which is Government spending which can be used to boost or shrink the economy very crudely is borne out be the evidence. Again, as an example, there were still one million men unemployed in the British economy in the spring of 1940; at which point there was a massive increase in Government spending - the Second World War, and the unemployment problem promptly disappeared.

However, using it to try and fine tune the economy doesn't work - it takes too long for tax changes and other initiatives to have any impact, by which time other factors have come into play.

2.   Schumpeter's cyclical theory - three cycles, long, medium and short term, all of which periodically hit either a high or a low together, and have the same impact as an economic Krakatoa. If you look at economic development over the last three hundred or so years, there has been a major depression every fifty years or so. Which frequently gets sorted out by a bloody great big war - and back to Keynes.

Which suggests to me that our Gordon's claim to have ended boom and bust is basically a load of bollocks. And he knows this, which is why he keeps changing the date of the start of the cycle.

And, of course, dear Reader, you are entitled to think this a load of fetid dingoes kidneys. Personally, I do not give a damn whether the next Prime Minister is from North, South, East or West of any particular border (although it is high time that we had one from God's Own County), just so long as it is neither a sycophantic warmonger or a smugly self-satisfied walking disaster.

Rant over!

Well, it was about 1970 I last read any Keynes - economics was one of my subsids at Nottingham that year.

Not sure of who and what they were all about, but my Rog and I had a great time listening to Tony go head-to-head with the opposition on CSPAN, last night. It was taped last Wednesday and there was some heated repartee about the ID cards, etc. I wish our Congress were so in each others' faces and that they were literally almost eye-to-eye. The way they debate over here seems so ponderous, wimpy, and megalithic in comparison.

I fear the "Yah-boo" of the house of commons is partly the source of the refusal to listen to reason that seems to be so much a part of British politics.

However, if you want to hear the best of British demagogy, probably the most generally accepted "top speaker" in the house is Gorgeous George Galloway. He did the USA a small turn over Iraq!

That little pantomime occurs once a week in the UK parliament katl, it is called Prime Minister's Question Time, and it is a farce. It is not real politics, it is a form of knockabout comedy. It used to happen twice a week, but Tony B Liar thought it made hime look less of a demagogue so he cut one session.

What an excuse for a man, did anyone see Bush slobbering away to all and sundry, at the G8 conference while the Microphone was open, and that creep Blair pratically hugging him, enough to make Cherie cringe.

He certainly is, plus I think he should be charged with $350,000 fine for speaking an obscenity on-air, as the FCC just raised the penalties for such, the idiot Puritans!
