Hello Mudcatters out there ...

Has anyone been to the Longford (Ireland) "Traditional Music and Bluegrass Festival" before ??

Its coming up this year 14 - 17 September 06 and I have booked my passage on the ferry, but would like input from anyone who has been before, as to what its like - Large? Small? lots happening on the fringes? i.e in the pubs (freebies etc?)

How long does it take to drive from Dublin Port?

What are the people like over there (NEVER been to Ireland!)

Any info would be good !

Thanks a million

Jo-Jo

Try over on this site:    http://www.footstompin.com/forum
There's at least one Irish based Old Time player there.
Sorry, can't do the blue clicky thing.
This may be of interest as well:    http://www.openhousefestival.com/2006/events/index.html

There's some more info on Johnny Keenan's website (www.johnnykeenan.com) including the lineup: http://www.johnnykeenan.com/Banjo%20Festival.htm

He refers to it as a Banjo Festival, so I'm assuming there will be a large bluegrass element. Sorry I can't make it, but hope you enjoy yourself, JoJo. I'd be interested to read your views on it if you'll post them when you get back. Have a great time -

Yep, this festival's a hoot - one of Ireland's best. Longford's just a couple of hours drive from Dublin. There aren't many session pubs around in the county, but it's a very welcoming place.

All the best,

Geoff

PPS: Drive from Dublin ferry used to be about 2 hours, but with more traffic (though better roads) it could now take longer these days. It also depends on the time of day: you really do want to avoid the morning & evening rush-hours. You should be OK if you allow between 2 & 3 hours - I haven't driven that run in years, as I now live in the far south, but the traffic in Dublin is FIERCE, so bypass the city centre and keep on the main through route heading west. Longford is right on it.

As far as I know this is a Banjo festival, in memory of Johnny Keenan, a member of a famous traditional music family, which included Paddy, Uileann Piper of the Bothy Band among others and another brother Brendan who plays whistles mainly, but also pipes I think. Sadly Johnny died a few years back.

I've never been myself, but I've heard good reports. As for the people like anywhere else it depends which ines you meet. But we're usually nice to tourists!

AAAHHH at last, some irish folk !

Hello to Bonnie, and thansk for all your help and info - will be going on r109 to M4, then onto N4 to Longford ... my ship arrives in Dublin at 5.45 AM so I hope to miss all the rush ...

Declan, thanks for your comments re tourists ! I shall keep it in mind.

And Geoff - sounds like you have actually BEEN to this fest is that right??? Not much on the fringes, oh dear, what a shame, so then I hope I can get in on a "day ticket" or some such ...

Yes, Bonnie and Effsee, I found the festival on the "johnny Keenan Festival" site, but wanted some "inside info" on the area, the festival the people etc etc.,

Many thanks to you all

Warmest regards from
Jo-Jo

On a releted matter (maybe this should be a new thread), anyone going to the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Leitir Ceannann, in August? And anyone know anything about flights to Knock Airport?

Knock is reasonably busy Ryanair fly to/from there from various destinations as well as other airlines.

Last year I got a very cheap flight back from there to Stansted at the end of June, fare was 0.99 euro and taxes and charges came to 6.60 euro so in total the flight was 7.59 euro BUT beware. Although Ryanair collect the 6.60 taxes/charges up front when you book, Knock Airport wouldn't let anyone check in unless they paid another 10 euros "development" fee to the Airport direct.

Not sure if this is still the case this year but bear it in mind.

Mind you at the price I paid it was still cheaper that the train from Stansted Airport back into London! Unless you know the cheap, perfectly legal loopholes for that journey which reduces it considerably [consultancy advise always given at a price ;-)]
