Sometimes cell phone indictes I'm getting a call from a number it identifies only as 600. I never answer these calls. Does anyone know what they are?

"are operated similarly to 800 numbers, where the party receiving the call pays for it. "

I interpret that as meaning that the holder of the 600 number pays for the call as does the holder of the 800 number.

They are used by companies to allow customers to call them at the company's expense, not the customer's.

So if you call a 600 number, you don't pay for it, they do. Nice. Bit like the 0800 numbers in the UK, freephone or whatever.

on mobile phones if the number doesn't start with 0 it seems to be spam unless you subscribed - then the message is the same - you pay for any sort of response.
They were designed for subscriptions and competitions but I get a few spam and I am not on any directory and no-one like that has the number - they just ry all numbers and the Networks refuse to acknowledge there is anything they can do about it. I can - not use the network as much, and keep the phone switched on so there is a cost to them

Cool Beans, a 1-600 number is usually from the MSAT or Satellite phone system. Many boaters and people who travel in remote areas carry a portable Sat phone now, they are much more reliable than celphones and can send data as well as voice.

The 600 code is used for certain services exclusively in Canada. One purpose for which 600 numbers are used is caller-pays cellular.

I'm right across the border from Canada (Detroit) but my area code is American. My phone never shows the whole phone number, just "600." I will continue to ignore these calls. Thanks, all.
