20 Jul 06 - 09:03 AM (#1788151) Subject: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Have you seen, heard, or read about any witty, funny, thoughtful, or downright raunchy billboard signs? In addition to advertising billboards, churche marquees often have thoughtful, and witty signs that make use of play on words. Share your finds here, if you have a mind to! ;o) |
20 Jul 06 - 09:04 AM (#1788156) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Btw, before starting this thead I did a Mudcat Supersearch using the key words "billboard signs', funny billboard signs, witty billboard signs, and marquee messages". The first key words resulted in this link only: Detail.CFM?messages__Message_ID=1404167 All the other Mudcat searches resulted in no messages. I'm sure there must be other Mudcat messages on this topic, and perhaps there's previous threads. If so, I'd love to read them. If you know of any Mudcat threads or examples from other websites, and if the spirit moves you, please posts links to them here. Thanks! |

20 Jul 06 - 10:29 AM (#1788226) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: JohnInKansas I may have posted it elsewhere, but the butcher shop in South Haven Kansas, about 8 or 9 miles from the OK border on US81, has a marquee sign on the front of the shop with the ever popular: "NOBODY BEATS OUR MEAT" I've been meaning to get a "proof of" photo for years, but never seem to go through there in daylight. 20 Jul 06 - 11:13 AM (#1788264) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Jim Dixon There's a bar in northeast Minneapolis called Mayslack's that is famous for its roast-beef sandwiches. For years they have used the slogan "Nobody beats Mayslack's meat." (See the crawling message on the web site.) |

The county to the north of us is Licking County and the Masonic Lodge there chose the unfortunate name of Licking Lodge. Probably some real interesting meetings there............... Spaw |

20 Jul 06 - 05:17 PM (#1788575) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Liz the Squeak There's one near us in east London over a dry cleaners, dating from the 1930's... 'Don't beat your wife, let us do it'... LTS |
20 Jul 06 - 08:05 PM (#1788723) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Kaleea Bill, that's not the only 69 Motel. There's one in Oklahoma where I spent my honeymoon, many many moons ago. It was, of course, on Highway 69. Back then, one would occasionally come across some old Burma Shave signs. Some of them were funny. |
20 Jul 06 - 08:37 PM (#1788743) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Give Us Back/Our Burma Shave "Remember the one that went, HENRY THE EIGHTH / SURE HAD / TROUBLE / SHORT TERM WIVES / LONG TERM STUBBLE? And who could forget this one? CAUTIOUS RIDER / TO HER/RECKLESS DEAR / LET'S HAVE LESS BULL / AND LOST MORE STEER. If you were born before 1955, you grew up with Burma-Shave signs. Perhaps you never actually shaved with the stuff, but chances are good you cracked a smile as the red-and-white signs whizzed past on your family's vacation to the mountains or along your route to the nearest town... Whiskers, safe driving, and romantic humor continued as the hallmarks of the Burma-Shave ad campaigns, with road safety edging out as a favorite theme by the early 1940's. PAST / SCHOOLHOUSES / TAKE IT SLOW / LET THE LITTLE SHAVERS GROW / BURMA-SHAVE succinctly managed to deliver a public service message, delight carloads, and advertise simultaneously.... One study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania claimed that the Burma-Shave signs were a singularly successful means of slowing speeders. This 1955 series captures the unique ability of the ads to both gently admonish drivers and pitch their product in the final sign: SLOW DOWN, PA / SAKES ALIVE / MA MISSED SIGNS FOUR/ AND FIVE / BURMA SHAVE." |
20 Jul 06 - 08:39 PM (#1788744) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi So...I'm not the only one who makes typos. Isn't that sentence supposed to read "LET'S HAVE LESS BULL / AND LOTS MORE STEER." ? |

20 Jul 06 - 11:03 PM (#1788824) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Peace It says, "If you are reading this sign, the pub is behind you." |
20 Jul 06 - 11:19 PM (#1788831) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Well, obviously we have two different computers. That's strange. I don't get that message at all from that link. And as for "If you are reading this sign, the pub is behind you.", I don't get it. I guess you have to have been there, or seen the visuals. What's the punch line? |
20 Jul 06 - 11:21 PM (#1788832) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Peace I would take that to mean that if one is drunk enough to be reading the sign, one is likely too drunk to know where the pub is. |

20 Jul 06 - 11:48 PM (#1788855) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Um, Bruce. Those last two links you provided didn't have anything to do with religion. Not that the last one said it did [have something to do with religion] but you sort of implied it by that caption. And while it's true that people's view of what religion can differ, I think you might want to change the captions on your links. Just a thought. Not a directive. |
20 Jul 06 - 11:52 PM (#1788857) Subject: RE: BS: Billboard signs & marqee messages From: Azizi Amos. Thanks, I got it. But I have to say that I wasn't that impressed with it. "It" being that link. [Less anyone think that my mind is on anything else but these billboard or marquee signs]. |
