Info: Folk Harmony Group 'Squire,' West Yorkshire

The Group Squire sang around the West Yorkshire area in mid 70s and I have located Hilary in the Yorkshire Dales (folk) Workshops

Others were Kevin and Jan, and David Taylor (who was formerly associated with the Music Rooms and Mally) in Cleckheaton

Also Carol Garbut (daughter of Frank of the Colne Valley beagles) last heard of working for Radio Hallam

Any one bring us up to the last 20 odd years?

Ray

I've located bookings at the Topic in Bradford in August 1977 and again in August 1979. I was with the first one, but Carol was with the 2nd. If anyone has any adverts, editorial or better still a photograph or two I'd be really grateful! My searching has put me back in touch with loads of friends from the late 70's, including Heritage, a wonderful London-based group. And now, 30 years on, I'm back singing harmony!

I also sang with Yan Tan Tether, but left when they became 4-part and that group continued to become the extremely successful Cockersdale. So if Sue or Nigel read this, great! I'm regularly in touch with Peter O through my YDW role.

I am in contact with Hilary by Email and if anyone sees Johnny Collins who was a big fan of Squire he will see that I was right that Hilary was in the group from the beginning!!

Conversation at Cleethorpes with JC a number of years ago!

How are you John?

We booked squire at Bracknell Folk club, and got them a few other clubs in our area - yes they were lovely, so I'd be glad to hear more about what's become of them...

I know Dave Taylor is living in Ireland somewhere, haven't seen him since Mally had a party at the Old Pack Horse in Cleckheaton after he'd sold the shop and it bacame the music room. That must have been about ten years ago. That's all I know.

Dave and Julie were still living in Ireland a couple of months ago when we saw them at the Fleadh Nua!

I have a record by Yorkshire singer Bill Price (I sing as I please) on the German Autogram label(ALLP 222)where he is accompanied by a group called Squire (Janice Hault, Carol Garbett, Kevin Thurlow and David Taylor). The LP was recorded in January 1978 in Yorkshire by Willy Schwenken.

Hello all,

Just found this while I was doing a little search for Squire on my mothers behalf. (Jan)

Janice Thurlow nee Hoult is doing fine.

There were some losses sadly as we know Bill passed a while ago, as did my Father Kevin Thurlow.

I believe I was given the name of David as my middle name when I was born to honour David Taylor.

My mother still speaks fondly of the time she spent singing with Squire to this day, the blue hues of the afor mentioned album cover of which we have always bring a smile to us.

Matthew David Thurlow.

Proud Son of Kev and Jan.
