Would it be democratic and just to ban Mudcat's only chimp and Mudcat's most notorious drunken hoser from these hallowed halls merely because they are Guests???? Never! It must not be allowed to occur! People must mobilize now to ensure that primates and total idiots can have their say here too, as long as they have a name to post under. I wish to point out that Chongo and Shane do NOT post anonymously, like some of the creeps that show up here. No, they have the guts to post under their own names and stand behind what they say and take the heat. They must not be forced out by a misguided attempt to cleanse the forum of a few antisocial malcontents and disgruntled members who hide their bile behind anonymity. We need to form a grassroots movement NOW to protect Chongo, Shane, and other decent Guest posters from a fascist pogrom by a few picky people! To the barricades, I say! No it doesn't mean LH would have to log out and log back in all the time. Use different browsers. Log in as LH on Firefox and use Opera for the fictitious folks. The more important issue, to me, is that folks using library or workplace computers that don't allow setting cookies would be kept out. |

Accountability has to be the linchpin- 'Anonymous' members have their ISPs on file, and a history. So do Chongo and Shane. |

You have members with cookies who sometimes log out...like to discuss Secret Santa doings, or jokingly assume the identity of P. Endicott Cruthwaite for a moment, and thus their cookie is not read. BUT! Their IP remains the same unless they go thru some arcane process to mask or change it. 'Upper Management'..Joe, Jeff, Max...have access to those IP numbers. ....Now, *IF* there were a way to compare the IP of P. Endicott to the known list of gen-you-wine members' IPs, and allow P. Endicott to post 'semi'-anonymously (identifiable if necessary), we could still have 'most' of the benefits of member-only posting in the BS section, without making it impossible for Chongo to pass out his immortal words for our edification!!!! This could also make it VERY difficult for petulant members to use anonymity to harass others. You see? Now, there's the idea....I'd bet it is possible, I just don't know how tricky it would be. |

(It would show up as "Guest, _______") Technology can do that, hello. They don't have to be members and login. Look at any other forum software and you'll see that most of the time when they allow guest posting, it still forces the guests to use a name and that name is displayed along with the post. |
