BS: Which Mudcat member could you live with

Listening to a guy on the radio today who said the person you met all those years ago and are now married to or living with,
would probably be the last person you would want to spend time with if you met them for the first time today. He said most people would be happier living with a close friend of the same sex who shares similar interests. Got me thinking, which mudcat member could you live with ?

Nothing horny please. Thank you

I am soooo flattered that you thought of me, dear Guest! (Heh!) You'll be One with all of us...when you die. Wait and see.

Well, after a number of attempts in this life at cohabitation with girlfriends....friends....etc....I have decided that I prefer to live alone. Yes, quite alone. It's peaceful and it allows me my mental freedom.

There is one other type of living arrangement that I like, but it's hard to find. I like living in an extended community of, say, 20 or more people who have a common ideal and a clear focus on it...providing it's an ideal I can believe in. A spiritual community of some sort, in other words. There are a few such places...most of them are on a rather different track somehow from the one I'm on. I've been at two in my life that were great. The first no longer exists. The second is in Trinidad. I'm sure there are others here and there. Given that my livelihood is based in Canada, this makes it a bit difficult.

So, I guess it's alone, for now.

Here's one verse from a song of mine called "Cold Is The Road":

"I hear breakers from a distant shore, it's closer all the time
In the stillness of the night my heart is stone
Other people just confound me with their small talk and their wine
If I must, I'd rather face this night alone
Being lonely is a feeling better felt in solitude
It's more honest, and best of all, it's free
I will write you one more letter to express my gratitude
When you see the morning star, remember me.
Cold is the road, as autumn slips away
How many miles yet to go?
Yes'n how many lives are buried in the clay
Down below?"

Hey LH, ever considered creating your own spiritual community? You've got the space, the knowledge, the talents, the Friends in High Places. Sounds like you've got the motivation, too.

When the teacher is ready, the students appear ....

(sorry bout the drift, folks)

Going with LH's idea, I refer you back to one of our best threads, imo: Click.

I need my alone space and time, too. There are at least two udder Mudders with whom I think I'd be compatible, but they, too, value their private space. So the above link would about do it for me and I'd want you to be there, LeeJ!!

By the bones of other ones
Who by the magic of the moment
Were mysteriously undone
You try to understand it
But you never seem to find
Any kind of freedom comin clean
Is just another state of mind ...

I'm not strong enough to set up, lead, and manage a spiritual community, Daylia. I know what it takes to do that. It takes a tremendously strong and focused person who is willing to carry a load about 20 times what most people carry. Or 50 times. It needs a fully accomplished master...male or female.

That isn't me.

And anyway, this place isn't quite big enough for that.

The combination of companionship AND autonomy is great in a well-working cooperative community. There are plenty of people to talk and relate to, lots of stuff to do, and yet you can be by yourself at the same time. But the place has to have extremely good leadership or it usually doesn't work out too well, in my experience.

If you think about it, this is a return to the original form of human existence...the small tribal community. It's the most natural way for people to live. Such a community benefits greatly from having people of all ages from children to old people. Sure beats hell out of taking all the old people and sticking them off somewhere apart from everyone else (in my opinion). It's wonderful having the young people around, it keeps the spirit of life moving powerfully in everyone and it adds to the joy of existence.

I think you sell yourself mighty short, LH. I've known you a long time, and it seems to me the only thing you need is a tad more confidence.

...who is willing to carry a load about 20 times what most people carry. Or 50 times. It needs a fully accomplished master...male or female.

WEll, I dunno about hte 'master' bit, LH. I think that's what wrong with a lot of so-called 'spiritual communities' -- every little mister presents himself as a master.

And about hte heavy load --- that depends on how you'd set it up, LH. You could choose to be the manager, not necessarily any kind of 'great guru'. You could delegate any responsibilities you couldn't or didn't care to manage yourself, and set up firm boundaries on your time and space so that people couldn't lean on you unnecessarily.

Besides, you're never alone. What about all those Friends in High Places I mentioned?    ;-)

A lot of little people try to set themselves up as "masters", Daylia, and a few even succeed...by outer appearance, at least. Then there are those who actually are Masters, and they don't try at all. It just naturally happens to them, because they are so inspired and driven so powerfully to help other people that people just naturally love to be near them. How do you figure Jesus acquired those disciples, and ended up with huge crowds of people gathering to hear him speak? Did he advertise? Did he get help from the established power structures of his time? Did he spend money lavishly to acquire "converts"?

What did Buddha do that made people gather to listen to him?

What did Gandhi do?

What did Mother Teresa do?

They rendered completely unselfish service to all those in need, that's what they did. That's how you become a Master.

Such people are exceedingly rare.

Yes it is. And I think "Mastery" is a continuum. Using the martial arts as an analogy, we all start out as White Belts (if and when we decide to enter the dojo at all). Granted, most if not all dojos are run by a high-degree Black Belt, but must everyone forego the benefits of a dojo if there are no Black Belts available?

I don't think so. As long as no one parades around in a Black Belt before they've earned it, what's wrong with a Yellow or Green or Brown Belt (or several) helping the Whites along? And creating a viable spiritual community in the process?

Sorry to go on and on about it, but the idea of living in a small community of like-minded people is a dream of mine as well.

I can think of several I could sure enjoy more frequent and lengthy conversations with...but the 'live with' bit is hard to judge. They might be perfect intellectual companions, but indulge in late night bagpipe solos!...Or lord forbid, they might cook & eat LIVER & ONIONS!

How about a "Mudcat Manor" with private apartments and central gathering areas? That, I could stand.

Naming names? hmmmmmm.....well, assume you're on it- I hate to find cut-off points.

"The idea of living in a small community of like-minded people is a dream" I may re-explore when I'm older and less mobile. It would be fun to putter around on the deck with a few old friends, singing a few well-remembered songs.

I did enjoy sharing a collective house in Lansing, Michigan, for years with various music friends. In fact the house, Rivendell Co-op, still functions as a residence of music people, some of whom work at Elderly Instruments.

Cheerily,

" What did Gandhi do?"

He denied medicine to his WIFE when she was ill, that he was all too happy to take when HE was ill!

Ya... real "unselfish service to all those in need"..... *rollseyes*

http://history.eserver.org/ghandi-nobody-knows.txt
"as one of many examples, that when Gandhi's wife lay dying of
pneumonia and British doctors insisted that a shot of penicillin would save her, Gandhi refused to have this alien medicine injected in her body and simply let her die. (It must be noted that when Gandhi contracted malaria shortly afterward he accepted for himself the alien medicine quinine, and that when he had appendicitis he allowed British doctors to perform on him the alien outrage of an appendectomy."

"Gandhi's monstrous behavior to his own family is notorious. He denied his sons education--to which he was bitterly hostile. His wife remained illiterate."

"He disowned his oldest son, Harilal, for wishing to marry. He banished his second son for giving his struggling older brother a small sum of money."

Get yourself a copy of Penn & Tellers "Bullsh!t", the episode titled "Holier Than Thou" and listen to some truth about Mother Teresa, if you can pull yourself away from the racket of whack jobs and fuzzy thinkers that is so-called 'holiness'.....

Daylia, don't hound the Hawk too much to do what you want done. He's refused added responsibilities for all this time for a reason, and it's not lack of confidence, it's lack of interest in that amount of responsibility. He knows quite well what's he capable of.

Anyway, back on topic: I could probably live with Hawk (but as he definitely can't live with me beng sick all the time that'd be no fun really) and I'd love to visit a whole bunch of people, especially CarolC because that would be fun!

True friends encourage (not hound!) each other to be the best they can be, to develop the potentials they see in each other.
