Tom Russell recorded it on his "Tonight We Ride" EP a couple of years ago and Bill Staines did it back in the '70s on "Old Wood and Winter Wine." |

One hearing should usually suffice to pick up the general melody of any folk song. But I couldn't help noticing, from Don Meixner's posted chords, that this is a perfect example of the "I-IV-V" songs we were discussing today on the Beginning Guitar Tips thread... y'know, the thing I was trying to explain in this post. This song's chords are: C - G - C - G - C - F - C - G - C - G - C ...which makes the chord progression: I - V - I - V - I - IV - I - V - I - V - I -------------------- GUEST harpgirl (I wonder if that was her and not someone posing as her) made a very broad assumption when she said, "One hearing should usually suffice to pick up the general melody of any folk song." Even if that were true, and it is by no means true for every musician, picking up a song's melody by ear doesn't necessarily mean that one has picked up the chord progressions by ear at the same time. JHH made a simple and polite request for lyrics and chords. GUEST harpgirl then made a snap judgment of him that began with "With all due respect" (which generally denotes sarcasm and a lack of respect) and an assertion that not only he but all musicians should be at her level of musicianship. Drag up all the queries about "Anderson's Coast". I also don't understand the problem with sticking in the chords to a song when requested. Even if they aren't exactly the way someone else may play the same song. They will give a starting point to experiment with. I was at square one at one time in my life and needed lots of help finding chords. The fact is I still do after 30 years. Mainly because of my hearing problems. But I am happy to help out when I can. I can't tell what chords I hear unless I have a guitar in my hands to compare with. But I can hear the changes and once I have an idea of major or minor keys I can usually suss things out. My friend John had Asperger's Syndrome as well as perfect pitch which he found to be a curse. He could never listen to what was being played without hearing those very tiny variations in pitch with in each chord. John disappeared from my life years ago and I'd like to find him again to see if he ever overcame that worry. I find it more useful to have exact change than perfect pitch. The point is it doesn't matter whether you know the trick of recognizing what chord is played by name. Hearing the relationship to the other chords will probably help just as much. Don |
