What is the name and/or origin of the 2nd song Pete sings on this video? The one he sings on the 12 string. I really like it.

The song is called "Osceola's Last Words." As Pete said, it was written by Will McLean.

Tom Russell recorded it on his "Tonight We Ride" EP a couple of years ago and Bill Staines did it back in the '70s on "Old Wood and Winter Wine."

He gives the composer's name as Will McLean. I'm not familiar with him but this appears to be a site about a music festival named for him: Will McLean Festival

Biography

Maybe that will help you track down a recording?

If anybody has the lyrics and chords to Oceola's Last Words by Will McLean, I'd gladly accept them.

OSCEOLA'S LAST WORDS
(Will McLean)

In a dungeon deep at Saint Augustine, Chief Osceola wept
For his people and his golden land. His body had not slept.

Then Wildcat said, "Oh, Chief, I beg you go
With me to stand against our mortal foe."

But Osceola raised his proud head high,
Said, "Do this ere I die.

"Wildcat, Brother, to the grassy waters take the Seminole.
There no white man can invade to leave you lying dead and cold.

"I shall not live among such evil men, who mock the sign of truce, this flag of white,
And honor not their given, sacred word. My name will be the light,

"The light that burns in every warrior's soul in dark and hidden reaches.
They will never drive us from our land, nor drain our blood like leeches.

"My spirit walks with those of you who die; and those of you who always will remain
Upon this bloodstained blessed flowered land must fight and fight again."

a beautiful, moving song which we like to sing down here in the land of flowers

With all due respect, JHH I always wonder when musicians ask for both chords and words, if they have ever heard the tune?

One hearing should usually suffice to pick up the general melody of any folk song.

Will was not known for melodic or chordal complexity...With a minute to spare I can hear it in three chords only, about Will's speed...
He was a brilliant backroads poet, but also a misogynistic, drunken arsonist...

When I get time away from essay writing, I'll call Will's last buddy on the planet... Doug Gauss, for his chords....

BTW, I know JHH has heard the tune, 'cause he provided a link to Pete Seeger singing it back around 5:00 this afternoon (on another thread). Personally, I liked Pete's fretless banjo playing better than the Osceoloa song. But, thanks for that link JHH.

No need to be rude. I made my remarks with respect. You must be a long time member. They're usually the rudest of men and why I don't hang around here much anymore. Or maybe you're another of Lepus Rex's iterations. I'm gone again for a year. Bye

It is pretty simple. But I can listen to a one chord song and hear five of them some times. It's always the simple ones that defeat me.

Here you go.

Don Meixner

Then Wil(F)dcat said, "Oh ,Chief, I beg you g(C)o with me to stand against our mortal fo(G)e."

I should say this is the way I learned it off a Bill Staines recording and the melody is very slightly different from what Pete Seeger does in the video.

I've heard that there's no recording of Will McLean actually singing it. Is that true? And if so, does anybody know why?

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chord Req: Oceola's Last Words

Don't know the answer to the recording question, JH'sH. But I couldn't help noticing, from Don Meixner's posted chords, that this is a perfect example of the "I-IV-V" songs we were discussing today on the
Beginning Guitar Tips thread... y'know, the thing I was trying to explain in this post.

This song's chords are:
C - G - C - G - C - F - C - G - C - G - C

...which makes the chord progression:
I - V - I - V - I - IV - I - V - I - V - I

--------------------

GUEST harpgirl (I wonder if that was her and not someone posing as her) made a very broad assumption when she said, "One hearing should usually suffice to pick up the general melody of any folk song." Even if that were true, and it is by no means true for every musician, picking up a song's melody by ear doesn't necessarily mean that one has picked up the chord progressions by ear at the same time. JHH made a simple and polite request for lyrics and chords. GUEST harpgirl then made a snap judgment of him that began with "With all due respect" (which generally denotes sarcasm and a lack of respect) and an assertion that not only he but all musicians should be at her level of musicianship. JHH's knee-jerk reaction of dropping the F-bomb may have been a bit rude, but it seems like GUEST harpgirl was rude first.

Simple in structure doesn't always mean easy to figure out. Drag up all the queries about "Anderson's Coast".

I also don't understand the problem with sticking in the chords to a song when requested. Even if they aren't exactly the way someone else may play the same song. They will give a starting point to experiment with. I was at square one at one time in my life and needed lots of help finding chords. The fact is I still do after 30 years. Mainly because of my hearing problems.

But I am happy to help out when I can.

I could care less what you worry about, TIA. Just pointing out to all concerned that this little interchange requires more information than meets the eye. It's an ongoing war between the parties aware of it.Other people should butt out.

It's a one-sided war with Lepus Rex, a member who generally posts as himself. She thinks a lot of people are Lepus Rex. Just ignore the irrelevant weird stuff - it's the internet, and there's plenty of it around. There are folks here who are friendly and would help a new musician, which is one of the things I believe Mudcat's supposed to be about.

I have been meaning to add this very moving song about Chief Osceola by Will McLean The Black Hat Troubadour. Any stories anyone knows about Will would be interesting to hear. I know some myself.

OSCEOLA'S LAST WORDS
(Will McLean)

In a dungeon deep in St. Augustine, Chief Osceola wept
For his people and his golden land. His body had not slept.
Then Wildcat said, "Oh, Chief, I beg you go with me to stand against our mortal foe."
But Osceola raised his proud head high, said, "Do this ere I die.

"Wildcat brother, to the grassy waters take the Seminole.
There no white man can invade to leave you lying dead and cold.
I shall not live among such evil men who mock the sign of truce, this flag of white,
And honor not their given sacred word. My name shall be the light.

(Modulate) or not

"The light that shines in every warrior's soul in dark and hidden reaches
They will never drive us from our land nor drain our blood like leeches.
My spirit walks with those of you who died and those of you who always will remain
Upon this bloodstained, blessed, flowered land must fight and fight again"

Instrumental Break....

"My spirit walks with those of you who died and those of you who always will remain
Upon this bloodstained, blessed, flowered land must fight and fight again."

I'm a beginning guitar player myself, and I've gotten to the point where I can hear a song and tell whether I recognize the chords, but not identify them yet. I don't think it's necessary to criticize other beginning musicians for chords requests. Pete Seeger wouldn't.

Anyhow, if you want to hear Pete Seeger sing this song himself, check out this link to his appearance on the Johnny Cash Show, at about the two-minute mark:

Hi Abargle,

I have discovered after 35 years of guitar playing that I am a beginning guitarist as well. I can't tell what chords I hear unless I have a guitar in my hands to compare with. But I can hear the changes and once I have an idea of major or minor keys I can usually suss things out.

My friend John had Asperger's Syndrome as well as perfect pitch which he found to be a curse. He could never listen to what was being played without hearing those very tiny variations in pitch with in each chord. John disappeared from my life years ago and I'd like to find him again to see if he ever overcame that worry. I find it more useful to have exact change than perfect pitch.

The point is it doesn't matter whether you know the trick of recognizing what chord is played by name. Hearing the relationship to the other chords will probably help just as much.

Don

I know these posts are old, but I just ran across them and Will did record this tune. It was the "B" side to Tate's Hell. I had the 45 rpm as a child and I'm really old now, but still do both songs as a tribute to Will.
