As a bone and bread Yorkshireman I have been very disappointed with the lack of celebration for this day and the lack of coverage and support in the press. The biggest and best support as a whole region and community I have come across has been in bonny SADDLEWORTH. At The Saddleworth Folk Festival last weekend the Yorkshire Day flags and banners were all over the place. People in this area ( previously in Yorkshire but now in Lancashire / Greater Manchester) refuse to accept boundary changes etc and still insist on calling themselves Yorkshire people. God bless 'em. Once a Yorkshire man/woman, always a Yorkshire man/woman and long may they reign ! |

We still regard the traditional borders of the county as Yorkshire. Administrative Areas are different. Humberside was a County Council covering part of Yorkshire and part of Lincolnshire and was never going to change our proud traditions. Same for the Lancies - see the website clickies. There used to be a href="http://hullshire.quickseek.com/">Hullshire administrative area And, of course, the River Humber (too thick to drink, too thin to plough) provides us with lovely tidal beaches here in Hull. It's just that mud hasn't really caught on yet! |

It was because of confusions caused during and by local government reorganisations that the Ridings Society was founded. Yorkshire day was then instituted to celebrate the true boundaries of this, England's largest county. It is in part explained in The Yorkshire Code (I think it translates as "Bugger Da Vinci!"). It is also explained by The Association of British Counties, who point out that other peoples' counties have been subjected to confusion over boundaries. Essentially Yorkshire (and all the other historic counties -insert name here.....) is still Yorkshire (or insert name....) and will continue to be despite any fleeting administration reorganisations.
