BS: Cochrane, Alberta

My friends Sarah and Graham have just moved to Cochrane, Alberta- not far from Calgary I believe. Anyone know the area? Is there anything worth going to see (apart from them - they are always worth being with)?

My wife has relatives who used to live in Cochrane; nice place, in the foothill of the Rockies, and a good place to start a tour of the mountains. Go further East, and you get to Drumheller, where there is a fabulous Paleontology museum out in the Badlands. South East, and you can go to the Franks Slide or Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump. Loads to do and see, and Calgary is a fun town, not just at Stampede time.

Cochrane is about half an hour west of Calgary. Pretty much a bedromm community now. Within an hour or two drive from Cochrane there's heaps of stuff.

What are you looking for? We got culture, we got nature, we got scenery, we got the truck from Brokeback Mountain. Well, we had it; I think someone bought it. We got good grammar, we got great music festivals & folk clubs

...we got twitchy keyboard fingers. Here's a link to folk stuff: Calgary Folk Listings

We got museums: Scroll down for the Gopher Hole Museum. That Gopher Hole museum is further east, though, geographically, and way off the map aesthetically.

Also check out MacKay's ice cream in Cochrane. Used to be a Sunday ritual to drive out there from Calgary.

Half an hour up the road in Water Valley is the Water Valley Celtic festival every June. Banff is around an hour west of Cochrane. Panoramic vistas to be sure, but also the Banff Centre for the Arts is there, with scads of interesting programming and concerts. Canmore is a bit closer, and the folk fest there (coming up this weekend, is a great little celebration in a beautiful setting. Canmore has the Highland games coming up in the fall. Mass pipes playing Amazing Grace in a swirling mountain rainstorm. Fills the heart.

Also, we got hockey. And oil money. Lots and lots of oil money.

Don't forget all the goat ropin' at the Calgary Stampede.

Cochrane used to have the best damned ice cream in North America. Hope it still does. Haven't been there since 1977.

I thought the Calgary Stampede was something to do with philately, not goat- raping.

If Google Earth is right about the address, they will be living in what looks like a suburban development of houses in gardens on an estate of windy roads just east of the town. Maybe just the season when the photo was taken, but it looks very dry and brown. Graham can get very thirsty when Sarah isn't quick enough to stop him.

Distances look huge- what's it like hiring a car or van over there?

Best ask your travel agent about that. There are many car rental companies. About five located at the airport.

Distances are huge, but Calgary to Cochrane isn't remotely one of them. You will find rental rates and fuel costs quite reasonable even though we're currently freakin out about the latter (at least in Ontario, today $1.10 - 1.15/ litre). It is definitely the way to get around, unfortunately the public transit system isn't what it should be in this country.

Now, WHICH "truck from Brokeback Mountain" is or was in Cochrane? If they assembled a few of them they probably could sell tickets.

Okay, I thought the truck (1950 GMC) was bought by a guy in Cochrane, but this story Brokeback mountain truck says the truck was bought by a guy in Bragg Creek, which is about 40 minutes south of Cochrane on Highway 22 - "The Cowboy Trail".

Music content - Ten minutes north of Bragg Creek, where Highway 8 connects to the 22, you will find Kamp Kiwanis, home in the spring and fall to the Foothills Acoustic Music camp. Here's a bluecky:Foothills Acoustic Music Academy . Some people arrive by truck.

Music Institute. Foothills Acoustic Music Institute. I thought Academy sounded a little highbrow...

CAN$1.15/litre???? That's 55p. I've stopped having dreams about when it was 55p a litre, most places have stalled temporarily at 99.9p/litre until the extra digit gets fitted.

So it looks like Cochrane is definitely worth a trip. Let's see if we're all around next spring..
