BS: Anyone going to Lechlade folk fest?

I see it's on this week end, no web site, so looked on pub's own website, says fest is Sat. & Sun.
Phoned pub to be told nothing going on tonight, not even a sing or session. Asked who is organising it, turns out to be the Pub.
Did you go last year? was it any good?
We will go tommorrow lunch anyway to put out publicity for White Horse Folk Fest.
Regards Skipy

As it is now late & there has not been a single reply to this I must assume that it is a great event & that everyone is there, except me!

This event has no need, or desire, to advertise :0)

It is a very small, word-of-mouth gathering.

How odd - I was, by utter coincidence, in this pub on Friday 28th July - never been in it before in my life and probably never will again! We were on our way to Dorset - called in to see my aunt who lives in Lechlade and went there for a meal. Lovely pub and the meal was fine but we were subjected (only word I can think of) to the most god-awful singing by some chap with backing tapes and crap equipment, which produced a load of feedback. Most people there just wanted a quiet drink by the river, but had this forced on us. I felt sorry for him, because the lack of attention he was being given was embarrassing - but what on earth made him think he had the skills to get up and entertain people??? I just wanted to bang my head on the table!   Why do pubs think this sort of thing is going to improve their business?

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, Blowzabella. It is unfortunate that the 'entertainer' was so bad - but perhaps the landlord was persuaded into a booking by him without having heard him first. Bob, the landlord, usually has pretty good taste in all things - especially the real ales and food which he serves. If you had been there for this past weekend you would have heard some good singing and harmonies - the only thing backing them being acoustic folk instruments.

This 'gathering' of singers, and a few musicians, began happening two years ago following the demise of the Cotswold Capers Festival. A few people had so enjoyed meeting at this lovely spot for the weekend that they decided to carry on doing so although no Festival as such was being organised. Liaison with Landlord Bob has been taken over by Crispin (from Newport Folk Club I think - but certainly South Wales), but it is a really relaxed weekend with singers and musicians gathering in one place to do their thing with no booked guests/concerts or formality.

Sounds very good but sadly too far away from us now we're living in East Yorkshire.

I wouldn't miss this for the world and feel privileged to attend. Lovely location, singing, ale & company - a real chill-out weekend before the craziness that is Sidmouth week....
