Singing on the USCGC Eagle, Portsmouth, NH

A little late on this event but. A bunch of shanty singers from the Portsmouth, NH, Portland, Maine area & I believe from the Cape Ann, Mass area will be getting together on this Saturday (8/5) from 2 to 4 in the afternoon & then from 6:30 to 8:15 evening then we'll go immediately to Market Square which will be blocked off to traffic (I think) to join Jeff Warner and Bob Webb, who'll already be underway, for a shanty blast. There'll be a fair amount of mudcatters there, maybe those that are going would check in here.

The USS Eagle is a 295' Bark (Barque) (3 masts, the forward 2 are fully rigged & the aft is fore an' aft) with an average complement of 200 bodies, so there should be one hell of a chorus singing with us. The last time, about a month ago on the Bluenose II, we did this there were about 20 of us in the afternoon & probably 15 of us in the evening & it was pretty much a great time. This will most likely be a much larger & grander time. John Roberts will be preforming at a festival in Salem, Ma, so he'll be on hand to lend his fingers & mouth to the festivities. Hope to see & meet any others that'll be coming over for the party.

Hopefully someone will be toting a camera.

Barry

Roll & Go will be doing an evening concert that same day in Bath at the Winter Street Chuch and unfortunately will not be able to join this worthy effort.

Enjoy your work!

Best make sure I can remember some songs!
Here's the USCGC Eagle Website. Think they'll let us go tooling around the harbor a bit?

My cousin should be coming up with his wife & in-laws, their nephew's serving on board. I just can't figure out what he's serving.

Jeri, you can always fall down on your fiddle.

I have been fighting off correcting the "USS" all day. Thanks for doing it in a very nice way, Jeri.

Maybe you should sing the midshipmen my little ditty about the Coast Guard:

Words by Charlie Ipcar © 1999
Inspired by AP Article Portland Press Herald 3/15/99
Tune by Vince Morash Fishing Time Again © 1997
Key: G

Those Swabbing Days are Gone

G-------D7---------G--------D7
In days of old, sailors paid their dues,
-----G---------F------------------G—F--G
Their ships were ship-shape, when the day was through;
-----------------D7-------------G--------F
They swabbed the decks, till they shined like new,
-----------G--------------F--G
Now, those swab-bing days are gone.

They swabbed the decks, they polished brass,
They painted bulkheads fore and aft;
Now, civilian workers contract those tasks
Since those swabbing days are gone.

Chorus:

G----C--------------G—C—G-C
Those swab-bing days are past and gone,
G------C—G-D7-G
They've left us here to sing this song;
C---G-----F-----G---F----G
Let's raise a glass, don't look for-lorn,
-----------------D7-----G
Those swab-bing days are gone.

I remember well how our old chief said,
As he gently stirred me from my bed,
"Rise up, me lad, and clean the head!"
Now, those swabbing days are gone.

They say we'll all be better trained,
In search and rescue, wind or rain,
With no dishpan hands, nor backs in pain,
Now, those swabbing days are gone. (CHO)

The old chief takes it with a grin,
"There's no use spitting into the wind,
But how'll they learn their discipline,
Now, those swabbing days are gone."

The times bring change from coast to coast,
And the U.S. Coast Guard's the first to boast,
All raise your glass, let's shout the toast,
"Those swabbing days are gone!" (CHO)

Charley Noble

A fine day for singing for sure. The weather's absolutely sublime.

Besides Barry Finn and Jeri, other Mudcatters coming include myself, Bat Goddess, Pirate of Cape Ann, Doryman and mate, and Anglo, along with most of the NH regulars from the shanty sessions and the Cape Ann crew from Gloucester.

There are no admission charges for any of today's events, but if coming by car, think serriously about using the municipal parking garage -- Tom

Well I'm not in Portsmouth today obviously, but I will be heading down to Vermont in a few hours. I will be picking up my teenagers who are visiting family there and driving up through Maine to New Brunswick in a couple of days. Anything going on Monday-ish?

W-O on vacation.
pm me.

In fact I'm in Vermont now...leaving for the coast in a couple of hours I expect. Don't think I'll be getting to Portsmouth cause we're heading for New Brunswick.   I guess the traffic would be murder on the scenic route up through Camden eh?

Good luck Willie-O & good to hear from you too. The traffic going to Portsmouth yesterday was awful & you will probably have your share of it too. I know of nothing going on in Maine for tomorrow, sorry. Maybe Charlie Noble might, if he gets back to this thread.

My daughter said she'd help me to post some of the pictures she took at the Eagle, that may take a few days though.

If I had a place to put photos, I could put mine up, too. (Not ALL of them. of course.) I got a few really nice pictures, and the light was amazing!

Bill, it's the weekend and it's the New England seacoast. If you're going up Rte 1, pack a good book and survival rations!

Avoid Camden/Rockland and Rt. 1 at all costs! There's a major Lobster Festival going on all weekend with 50,000 attendees wondering what to do with themselves when it's all over.

Wish they'd just throw themselves into the sea!

So, how did the singing go?

Charley Noble

This was a wonderful event. Both sessions on the Eagle were full of good song and good cheer. The ship was spectacular. The CG crew were very polished and helpful. Tom and Linn....thanks for a wonderful day of song and good company....lots of good company. Linguini with white clam sauce at midnight with merlot wine and some other libations to cap off a spectacular day.
