Gower, Aug 8-13 Anything on?

I'm going camping in the Gower (or possibly on the Gower, I dont know what they say there). next week, Tuesday to Sundayish. Will be based in Oxwich. Anyone know any music pubs, anything relvant to folk? We(the Boat Band) will have instruments. We are having a little holiday, but wouldn't be averse to making a little music.
We want to go and play that very fine tune the Porteynon Whim in Porteynon, at the very least.

Well, if you're on the Eisteddfod field (Llangyfelach, N. Swansea, horrible big pink - yes pink - tent) on Thurs that's when a lot of Welsh instrumentalists have decided to hold their session. Noon, I think, but there's a book launch at 2.00 when they're doing a reprise.

I dont think I could face an Eistedfodd. I'm going on a campsite in Oxwich. I dont know anything about the place or its surroundings,a friend said let's try it so we're going for it.

Take a look at The Halfpenny Folk Club

"The Halfpenny Folk Club is held at the Greyhound Inn, Oldwalls, Llanrhidian, Gower, every Sunday. It starts at 8.30pm and has guest artists every month and singers evenings in between when all are welcome to sing, play, or just to listen. Singers nights are free, there is an entry fee for guest nights."

Hi Greg -

Carole and I live on Gower (most locals insist it's either 'Gower' or 'the Gower peninsula', never 'the Gower', but I personally don't give a toss) - pm me and we'll see if we can arrange something. As Nigel says, there is a folk club on Gower, at the Greyhound in Oldwalls, and we'd be glad to see you, but it's Sunday night and it looks like you're going home then. Maybe we can have a BBQ on the beach one evening, or something.

Andrew

Thanks very much for all the info. Keep it coming. I shall never refer to "the Gower" again.

I don't know about any folk events, but I've spent quite a bit of time in that lovely part of S Wales over the years. One of my favourite places there is Rhosili, at the SW corner of the peninsula. There's a gorgeous unspoilt sandy beach there and at low tide you can walk across to the island of Worms Head - but beware! Make sure you check the tide tables and allow plenty of time to get back before the tide comes back in. I nearly got stranded there once and just managed back in time. And the sunsets there are spectacular too!

Have a great time.
