WILD HOG'S DEN
unknown

As I rode round to Wild Hog's Den,
Deedle-o die, Deedle-o day,
As I rode round to Wild Hog's Den,
Deedle-o die, Deedle-o day,
As I rode round to Wild Hog's Den,
I saw the bones of a thousand men.
Camewee-quee, quiddle-i-quay
Deedle-o die-i-day

We fought for two hours and a half,
Deedle-o die, Deedle-o day,
We fought for two hours and a half,
Deedle-o die, Deedle-o day,
We fought for two hours and a half,
And finaly that wild hog run at last.
Camewee-quee, quiddle-i-quay
Deedle-o die-i-day

This is only two verses of a larger song. My great-granny couldn't remember the rest but that it delt with chasing the hog to ground. It came from the Ozarks in Arkansas but Great Grandma Henson had been a Stewart before she married. They (her grandparents) had come to America after the Battle of Culloden. She was born in Ohio and she marreid and moved to Texas. When my grandmother was 4, they packed a covered wagon and moved to northwest Arkansas in 1910.
Someone once suggested that it might be linked to the Calledonian Hog story. I also once heard a song that envolved a knight hunting this dangerous mad hog and before he finds it, a fairy gives him some magical help. The tune to that one is totally unlike the tune to this, but there are key words that match. I lost track of that song's name.

That's the first "new" version of "The Wild Boar" in a long time. Also the first, IIRC, in the first-person. Thanks for posting it! Is there any way for you to indicate the tune?

Many good versions and history in thread 50640; with some material that is not readily available.

Kate Kestner, any way you can preserve the tune? Your version is well-worth preserving.

Kate, thanks so much for this version of "Wild Hog". More verses and the tune would be wonderful. I'm wondering if we can somehow transfer this to the other thread. I know it is a long thread, but the intention there was to be a complete as possible. If that is not convenient, I will simply copy Kate's version over to it. T.O.M.

John, PM or ask Joe Offer. I think he would do it with this one.
The general rule is that it's not a good idea to post duplicates of things already in the Forum or the Digital Tradition. When you're making a study of a song and its variants, like in a DTStudy or an Origins thread, that restriction doesn't make sense. If it's an isolated message or a very short thread, I move it to the more significant thread. If it's in a longer thread like this one, I copy-paste a "printer-friendly" copy of the significant message(s) into the target thread. The idea of using a "printer friendly" copy is that it's formatted in a way that makes it clear who it's from and when and where it was posted, so the duplication doesn't confuse the people who do harvesting from the Digital Tradition. Looks like I have some studying to do. I haven't looked into hog songs much. I was raised among Holsteins, not Hogs.
