Lyr Req: Traveling Kind (from Country Gentlemen)

Subject: lyrics search
From: GUEST

I am looking for a song that I used to sing years ago. We always called it Travelin Man. I always believed that it was a Doc Watson song and while a search of his discography does produce a song on one of his albums called Travelin Man it is a different song. A Google lyrics and Mudcat song list search did not produce what I am looking for.

I have no idea where I found this song or who wrote or performed it but here are the lyrics that I remember...

Oh lord I am
A travelin man
And my daddy
So was he
And every night
When the sun goes down
Oh my lord
I must be free

Well listen to the sound
Of the pouring rain
And listen to the wail
Of the south bound train
It's a lonely sound
And a lonely sight
I'm a lonely man
On a lonely night.

Much thanks for any help you can give!!

Tommy Hunter used a song by this title as his theme, but a different song. Perhaps it is the one on Doc's discography.

Need more info GUEST. Anything will help I hope. The lyrics are giving up nothing. Also, the first stanza doesn't seem 'right'. (No offence to your memory.)

Hi - I've crosslinked your thread to others on songs titled "Travelin' Man," but I didn't find a song that looked like yours. The one I know has a chorus like this:
    He was a travelling man
    Certainly was a travelling man
He was the most travellin'est man
There ever was in the land
He travelled East, he travelled West
    Was known for miles around
And he never got caught & he never got whupped
Til the police shot him down
I thought that was the version Doc Watson sings. I really like this song and I'd like to add it to my repertoire, but I can't quite get the tune down.
But the requested song doesn't sound like any Doc Watson song I've heard.

The song you are referring to was recorded by the Country Gentlemen. I don't have the lyrics available (here at work) but you may try cross referencing the Gents to get the words. Also, the title on the album may have been something like 'Travelling Kind' not 'man'. -btmp

Joe,
The tune is a lot like "I've Got Mine." If you can play one, you can play the other. Both are attributed to Pink Anderson, I believe. Paul Geremia recorded "Travelin' Man" on his first LP (remember LPs?), "Just Enough."

Roy Bookbinder also recorded it(David Bromberg, I can swear I remember him singing it). Joe, PM me with a time to reach you and I'll give you the tune.

Oh, I know the tune, and I have it on several recordings - I just can't get it to work with my voice. Same with "Rigs of the Time," another song that's being discussed currently. It's humbling, since I'm able to carry most tunes pretty well.

But anyhow, this thread is about another "Travelin' Man," and we haven't found any information on that one yet.

The song in question is by the Country Gentlemen. Charlie Waller does the lead singing. Confusion may come from the title "Traveling Kind" as opposed to "Travelin' Man" which is a song by Ricky Nelson.

Steve Young is the writer, also known for "Seven Bridges Road".

the lyrics quoted by joe are definately from the version by David Bromberg..about a guy who was so fast that he could turn out the light
and jump in bed before the room got dark.

Roy Book Binder perfomrs country-blues songster Pink Anderson's version of the song "Travelin' Man" and uses a logo depicting it as his symbol on his vehicle.

Here's what I have gleaned from some sound samples:

TRAVELING KIND
(Steve Young)
(As sung by The Country Gentlemen)

...Listen to the wail of a southbound train.
That's a lonely sound. That's a lonely sign
I'm a lonely man at a lonely time.

The rich man has no use for me....

...the laugh's on you.
You [or "you'll"?] live and die by another man's rules.
And when we both are dead and gone,
The legend of my kind live on....

Charlie Waller and the Country Gentlemen recorded this song. Charlies son Randy now does it with the Country Gentlemen. When Charlie recourded it it was call Travelin' Kind.

Oh Lord I am a traveling man
And My Daddy, so was he
And every day when the sun goes down
Oh My Lord I just got to be free

Chours: Listen to the sound of the fallen rain
Listen to the wale of the south bound train
That's a lonely sound, Thats a lonely sign
I'm a lonely man in a lonely time.

The rich man has no use for me
Nor have I any for he
He'll judge a man, by the clothes he wears
Judge I a man by the burdens he bears

Chours: A ha rich man, laughs on you
You live and die, by another mans rules
And when we both are dead and gone
The legend of my kind will live on

Go play with your houses, of white and wood
And live your life like you think you should
I'll ride these rails until I die
And if I get lonesome I'll just have to ride

Chours: Listen to the sound of the falling rain
Listen to the wale of the southbound train
That's a lonely sound, that's a lonely sign
I'm a lonely man, in a lonely time.

Charlie and Randy both does this song in Em. The verse is just Em and Am. The chours is C, G, C, G, Em on the first 2 lines the last 2 lines Em and Am. This is a very cool song and I hope I have helped you.

Here is how Steve Young sang it. There are some minor differences from above post:

TRAVELING KIND
(Steve Young)

Oh Lord I am a traveling man
And my daddy so was he
And every day when the sun goes down
Oh my lord I must be free

Hey listen to the sound of the fallin' rain
Listen to the wail of a southbound train
That's a lonely sound and a lonely sight
I'm a lonely man in a lonely night

Hey, the rich man has no use for me
Nor have I any use for he
He'll judge a man by the clothes he wears
Judge I a man by the burden he bears

Aha, rich man, you know the laugh's on you
You live and die by another man's rule
And when we both are dead and gone
The legend of my kind will still live on

Go play with your houses of white and wood
Live your life like you think you should
I'll ride these rails until I die
If I get lonely I'll just have to ride

Hey listen to the sound of the fallin' rain
Listen to the wail of a southbound train
That's a lonely sound and a lonely sight
I'm a lonely man in a lonely night

Oh lord I am a traveling man
