filk songs

I'm an avid fan of folk music and literary science fiction. I keep hearing about SF-based folk song swapping at conventions, but have never made it to any cons. I'd be interested in finding books, recordings, websites--anything concerning filk singing. I'm especially interested in literary SF, though I'll make an exception for Star Trek or the occasional Star Wars song. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Teresa

I'd say start with Mercedes Lackey. Before she became well known for her writing, she was a filk singer of fair note amongst that particular set. If I'm not mistaken, she's made a couple of albums of her songs.

Teresa, a search of the internet on any good search engine using the keyword 'filk' will bring up lots of sites. One filk song I stumbled across on the internet was "Do Virigin's Taste Sweeter Thank Those Who Are Not" (sung to the Irish Washerwoman) addressed to a virgin-eating dragon.

Wow! Thanks, Alice and M. for the suggestions. I didn't realize there was so much filk material on the web! I'll keep browsing happily. Cheers, Teresa

I've found three filk newsgroups: Rec.music.filk, Fidonet.filk, and Alt.music.filk, which can be accessed easily from Outlook Express. Thanks, all. Teresa

a search for @filk in the DT gets 10 hits. There are probably more that are not so labelled.
