FSGW Getaway
2006 Getaway

Friday to Monday, November 3 to 6, 2006
West River Conference Center (West River, MD)

Get away from it all, at the height of the autumn color season, and make music together with your neighbors and musicians from all over the world. (People last year came from as far away as Guam, Alaska, Iceland, England, and Israel.) Our new location at West River Conference Center (West River, MD) has heated facilities and flat terrain, and is on the shores of an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. West River is a lovely spot with lots of inviting places to jam or sing, from first light to the wee hours.

To register, download and fill out the registration form. You'll need to mail it to our registrar, Dean Clamons (P.O. Box 217, Clifton, VA 22024-0217), along with payment. If you need a scholarship or price break, contact Charlie Baum, head of the Scholarship Committee. If you need to pay in foreign currency, contact Dick Greenhaus at Camsco to make arrangements.

For 2006, the dates are Friday afternoon, November 3rd, through Monday morning breakfast, November 6th.

Getaway?

For over 40 years FSGW has held its fall Getaway weekend so that members and friends can share music, stories, crafts and dance in a relaxed camp setting.

The Getaway is:
  • A chance to interact with the FSGW community and meet talented music lovers from our local area and from as far away as Great Britain, Alaska, and Israel.
  • Music-making under the trees, on the lawn, by the shore;
  • Group singing and jamming at its best;
  • A rich program of workshops with opportunities for learning, jamming, singing, crafts, and storytelling;
  • Trying a craft--quilting, basket-making, puppets, and mask-making have been highlights of past years;
  • Great food;
  • A terrific weekend for the whole family, with lots of special children's activities;
  • A wonderful chance for parents to introduce their kids to the magic of group singing and dancing--or to discover that magic for the first time themselves.

    Our New Camp--West River

    We've got a new space this year--we've changed to a camp that's heated, flat, closer to town, and more compact. The West River Conference Center (West River, MD) is run by the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. The West River Center is on the shore of an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. If the weather is clear, you can watch a sunrise over the water. Because the West River Center didn't have any weekends in October where we could have the entire camp to ourselves, we've moved the weekend this year into the first weekend of November--but remember, we've got a heated facility, so shivering nights (and days) should be a thing of the past!

    Heated Bedrooms--and More!

    There are 50 bedrooms in 6 buildings. All bedrooms feature two bunk beds (two upper and two lower) with mattresses (bring your own pillows, bedding, and towels). All bedrooms feature controllable heat, and all accommodations are near good flush plumbing and hot showers (with separate mens and womens bathrooms in each building).

    We've got five lodges and the "retreat center" building--each lodge contains 8 bedrooms centered around a common lounge, and the retreat center offers 10 bedrooms off of a hall, and a couple of common rooms. All bedrooms contain four beds--two upper bunks and two lower bunks. (There is only one exception--a sextuple with three upper and three lower bunks in the retreat center.) This may provide challenges to our housing arranger, and there are many people who are beyond the age or capabilities of managing their way into and out of an upper bunk, so we're going to ask those who can handle upper bunks to volunteer. We'll even give you a discount. If you cannot handle an upper bunk, or have further special needs, let us know on the registration form. If you wish to bring an RV, you may do so and guarantee your privacy, but there are no hook-ups, and you'll have to pay the same fees as those occupying a room, because that's what the camp charges us.

    More Music Making Spaces

    There are five lodges with common rooms for music making, a retreat center with one room to serve for registration and "the mall" (for crafts and CD sales), and another common room for music making, a "nature center" building suitable for larger gatherings, and the dining hall, with a view of the West River. There's a waterfront (though by November, it will be beyond the season for anything except viewing; families with small children are warned about the potential water hazard). Most of the buildings are wheelchair accessible, although three of the lodges still aren't.

    We will designate one lodge as a quiet house, and keep its lounge quiet of music for people who want to nap at any hour. At least one lodge will be have a music-all-night common room, for people who want to "sleep" with the sound of partying. In addition, the nature center and dining room offer spaces for late-night music.

    Closer to DC

    West River is 45 acres of woodlands, natural wildlife areas and one mile of water front on the West River, an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. It is just 19 miles south of historic Annapolis and within one hour's drive of Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

    For folks who remember Camp Letts, it's 10 miles from Camp Letts by car (and 5 miles by boat). Folks coming from Virginia and the South get off the Beltway onto Pennsylvania Avenue (MD4) near Camp Springs (Exit 11). Folks from the Northern suburbs of DC go out Route 50 to Annapolis and then South for about 19 miles. From Baltimore and BWI, I-97 leads south to Annapolis, and for folks from Delaware, New Jersey, and points North, you can go south in Delaware and cross the Bay Bridge (US 50) at Annapolis to bypass Baltimore. For detailed directions, click here.

    Fees

    We have rates for one, two, or three nights, and one for day-trippers who don't want to eat. (You MUST register in advance if you wish to dine!)

    Getaway fees depend on whether you're an FSGW member or not, and whether you're an adult or a child. See the registration form for the fee that applies to you. Fees are determined by our actual costs to run this event--food, camp rental, etc. We try to keep them as low as possible, but the event needs to cover its costs--and the rates of the new camp will actually allow us to reduce fees a bit from last year, especially for children.

    If you want to join the FSGW to take advantage of member rates, just download the membership form
    (see http://ceimd.com/php/public.php?Org=fsgw&ProgramID=1&NoTitle=1&NoCats=1)
    and fill it out and send it in along with your Getaway registration and enough payment to cover everything.

    The weekend starts Friday evening with a potluck dinner. If you register for two nights, your registration fee covers three meals and a midnight snack both days on Saturday and Sunday. Three-night registration gives you an additional night's lodging and breakfast on Monday morning. One-night registration gives you all meals and snacks on either Saturday or Sunday and, if you wish, a bed on either adjacent night.

    Thanks to the Linda Lieberman/David Olive Memorial Fund, scholarship help is available for those who need it. If you need full assistance, or a break on the price, contact Charlie Baum via e-mail or private message before you send in the registration. Contributions to replenish the fund are always welcomed and are tax-deductible! We hold a silent auction at the Getaway to help replenish the fund--you may wish to donate items to auction off to help others who can't afford the whole cost of the weekend.

    A Couple of Policies

    There is no smoking allowed in any of the camp buildings.
    The camp is run by the Methodist Church, and we are asked not to bring any alcohol.

    You can see more about the new location at its website.

    Volunteer Help

    We'll need volunteers to help set up on Friday, to welcome and register guests, to clean up after our Friday night potluck dinner, and to help make sure everything is in order when we check out.

    In advance, we can also use help with programming. If you're interested in leading a workshop, suggesting a workshop, or organizing and scheduling events suggested by others, contact Carly Gewirz at 703-631-9655 or e-mail the Getaway Committee.

    For more information please contact the 2006 Getaway Event coordinator Charles Baum, 706 Bonifant St., Silver Spring, MD 20910 (301-587-2286) or e-mail the Getaway Committee.

    Last year, some of us put together a Friday night birthday/anniversary/newlywed celebration with cakes and "prizes". Anyone interested in helping put it together this year?

    This sounds like heaven Charlie, I've only been closer a couple times. "(and 5 miles by boat)" can you actually get there by boat from the sea? I might just have to steal my little brother's power crusier to save on the gas costs. This sounds like a great set up & I'm happy to say that I'll be in great shape to go, thank you. As always use me if you can & as you wish, though that's not the grandest offer you can have what I've got. OK, stop it, enough now & quite making fun me.
    See you all there.

    Ohhh, I'm so happy to see this posted.
    LOL to you & the rest of the committee.

    yep, Barry...you could get there from the ocean, if you can navigate the twists & turns of the Upper Chesapeake....boats are tied up all over the area.
    I screen-copied some pics of the area and posted them on to my site.

    Take a look (big file..600,000 bytes)

    The camp is right in the middle, above "Georges Lane" (F-11 on your browser may give you a full screen view)

    Here is a closer shot

    Closer yet The buildings are near the water, the cabins are in the trees at left. The L-shaped building is the main meeting area, with the dining hall to its left.

    Here is the link to the area for those who can use the map 'live' (This is that DaylightMap site...Google Maps can probably get you the same basic view)

    One CAN arrive by boat at West River. I think the last time that happened at a Getaway may have been when Gordon Bok navigated his boat to Camp Letts (so I;m told). If anyone is serious about this, I can check with the camp about anchorages.

    I have been bugged for several years that the Getaway is just far enough away that it's not feasible for us to go during the school year. This year, it doesn't much matter, since:

    A) It conflicts with NOMAD, where we have a couple of sets, and

    B) Although I'm perfectly capable of enjoying myself without drinking, I'm an adult, and have been for quite a while, and I get grumpy when someone else presumes to tell me whether I can drink or not, and he/she isn't my doctor. I ain't no Methodist. I don't even know what method they're talking about.

    As I read it, we get $40 off (for the two of us) if we belong to FSGW...which costs $43 for a family membership. We don't mind supporting the organization, although it is unlikely that we'll get to many events (since we are in New Mexico). Can we enclose the membership with the registration or do they have to go to two different places?

    Also, Joel Greer and Annie Storr and their young kids arrived once at Camp Letts by sailboat. I remember well, because they took Darriel and me out for a sail. Somewhere I still have some photos....

    Other great fringe benefits at Camp Letts were canoeing (we once had a kayaking workshop if I remember correctly, taught by Carter Hearn and Ursy Potter) and horseback riding.

    Alas, Camp Letts revamped itself into a "conference center" and doubled the rents. Sigh....

    Yes, Janie, they are. In fact, one or two of them will no doubt be designated venues for workshops. They're not HUGE spaces, but big enough to do the trick. They are furnished with, as I recall, couches and armchairs, but there are folding chairs readily available in each building (or so we were told), and should be just fine.

    The Retreat Center building has, in addition to a large open room (which will serve nicely for registration and silent auction and craft-and-CD sales) and a small kitchen, a large lounge which will be an excellent space for large workshops. All in all, I think it will do very well.

    Just a little over two months to go!

    Yes...at least for now, Barry. It is a rare camp which will trust strangers to rustle around its kitchen. (We managed at old Camp Letts, but they watched us like hawks the first couple years, and then when we had Debbie McClatchy run the food, they eased off a bit after they saw she could do it....this kitchen is a bit tight and they are not likely to let us use it..)

    regarding the kitchen staff - if the laws are anything like they are in NYS the camp may not have the OPTION of letting you use the kitchen. I was involved with a summer camp for many years - week long residential camp - and we did out ouwn cooking - but when we had to swap locations we were informed that was ONLY because we had been "grandfathered" in - and in the new location we MUST use the staff provided by the camp - or *THEY* would not be able to get their health permit. (and no, the state wouldn't let us apply for our own permit)

    What does it look like for bringing instruments for those from overseas? Do we ( locals ) need to set up an instrument "Loan ranger", to make sure everyone has the needed musicmaker?

    I can bring an extra banjo, appalachian dulcimer, and guitar if any overseas folks need to borrow. Also, if anybody is heading south after (or passing through before, for that matter) the Getaway they can have bed and board at my place, in Mechanicsville, Virginia (just outside of Richmond).   Thats about 2 and a half to 3 hours from the Getaway location, I think.

    Well of course, if someone in the area happens to have a Crane system duet concertina I could borrow for the weekend, that might solve a few flight problems - but I reckon I'd be better off bringing my own. Of course, it's a lot smaller than most instruments, so I don't think I'll have problems bringing it as a carry-on, even now. Bet I get asked to play it at the airport again though - just to prove it really is an instrument.

    Andrew-

    It takes courage to bring a concertina through airline check-out nowadays. I remember recently how pale the security attendant looked when she saw the image on the screen of all those wires in my little innocent Anglo. Eventually I convinced her that while some might consider it an instrument of torture that it was designed as a musical instrument.

    Good luck!

    I, too, can't get the camp's "Virtual Tour" to work with either Safari or Firefox. Which leads me to an important question... I'll probably need to use my wheelchair this year if we day-trip as we usually do. If the workshops/songswaps are held in the cabin common rooms, will I be able to get in? Will there be an accessible toilet, with grab bars and a seat that's higher than 12" off the floor? Where will the evening concerts be held?

    Mary...Charley's opening post says:

    ". Most of the buildings are wheelchair accessible, although three of the lodges still aren't."

    The whole place is amazingly flat and easy in 'most' places.

    I was there, but don't remember the restrooms in detail...we will find out and post the necessary info.

    Bill, you said it was Java. The link for the cabin says "javascript:cabin()". I dunno. Apparently, the page linked to above was (not completely) copied from http://www.virtualoutfitter.com/tours/westriver/tour.htm. This one works. It's fairly superficial. The cabin looks nice, but there's no view showing whether or not there are steps, or whether the bathrooms are wheelchair accessible.

    Mary--

    I specifically remember the bathrooms in the retreat center having grab bars and being built to ADA specs. I think the restrooms in at least one of the cabins are likewise, and there may have been additional bathrooms the layouts of which have slipped my memory. Evening concerts will probably be in the dining hall (post-dinner-clean-up), and jam sessions will be held all around. Two (or perhaps three) of the cabin common rooms we'll use aren't wheelchair accessible (or weren't when we toured last fall), and we'll have to make sure that the workshops you want to attend are in the accessible places. Given the interchangeability of most of the common rooms, it should be an easy thing to put the ones you want to go to in the accessible ones, providing of course that you can make up your mind which of the too many simultaneous workshops you want to be accessible.

    Yay Jeri--
    The virtual tour link works for me too.

    For others who can get it: "Waterfront" scans around the camp. The building beyond the gazebo and grill is the retreat center. The building with the big windows and the sign of the cross next to "West River" is the dining hall. My guess is that the dock can accommodate those wishing to sail to camp.

    "Cabin" shows the common room of one the lodges. There are five such common rooms. If memory serves, the doors on either side of the water cooler lead to bathrooms. The other doors lead to short corridors on either side off of which are 4 bedrooms each. The extreme right edge of the pan is the front side of the building, with an entry porch and the main entrance door.

    Well, I'll either have sold the Kitchen and be temporarily rich and unemployed and come, or I'll not have sold it and need a break badly and come, so either way . . . I haven't looked into flights yet, I brought my fiddle as carry on on Aerlingus last week to Ireland and had no trouble. It's probably more dependent on currant carry on policy of your particular air line and size of instrument. One of the guys I was travelling with checked his guitar. He got an official Taylor shipping box, reinforced it at the corners, padded it well, checked it and it was fine (quite large, but fine)

    Looking forward to singing until all hours.

    As almost every room has four beds, and it will be quite crowded this year, your best bet is to figure to which other single people or couples you'd like to share with. We can pretty much guarantee single sex rooms, if desired, and we can certainly put two compatible couples together.

    Especially since, a few grueling business trips notwithstanding, I'm not working 60+ hours a week and pulling my hair out like I was last year. I had a reasonably OK time, but not as good a time as previously. Because I'd been working so much OT and was generally distracted, I hit the Getaway woefully unprepared and under-practiced, plus was so exhausted I pretty much crashed out after the Saturday night concert.

    This year I should be able to concentrate on polishing off old songs and hopefully even learning some new ones! Also might even not turn into a pumpkin at midnight...

    Li'l RObert: We been known to do some blues at the Getaway, and it does raise the roof a bit when we do it indoors.

    But, as they say, man shall not live on blues alone...

    A reminder to one and all--

    The Deadline is rapidly approaching

    By this coming weekend, the FSGW (actually, me) is going to have to tell the camp how many meals to prepare, and our housing chair (not me) is going to have to figure out how to best fit attendees into the 202 beds available.

    LAST CALL

    If you're coming, please let us know. Send an email to our registrar that he should expect your registration form. Or PM me. But let us know if you can come.

    I'm going to put this post on any threads that might produce results for forgive me for multi-posting.

    We are going to arrange for a raffle at the Getaway to raise funds for Pene. What we need are items to be put into the raffle so, if you have anything suitable and are either coming to the Getaway or can get the item to me or to someone who is coming to the Getaway please let me know and I can include it in the list of prizes that I'll be putting together over the next two weeks.

    If you want any further info PM me.

    By the way, this is separate from the Silent Auction for which donations are also requested.

    I'm going to be busy crocheting the next couple of weeks!
