2007 FSGW Getaway-November 2-5, 2007

22 Aug 06 - 11:11 AM (#1816171)
Subject: 2007 Getaway
From: Genie

I know it's way ahead of time, but I hope the dates for the 2007 Getaway will be posted as soon as they are known.

I have to arrange my business schedule months ahead of time. Right now I'm beginning to make commitments for all of 2007, and once a few of those are in place, I'm kind of locked into being in one city or another during a given week.   If I knew when the 2007 Getaway would be, I could reserve that weekend for it.   Even if the choice could be narrowed down to 2 or 3 weekends at this point, it would help.

I'm starting this thread now, since I may not be the only person who has to make long-distance travel plans way ahead of time.

Please announce the prospective dates as soon as they are known.

Thanks

Genie

Assuming the new facility at West River works out for us this year, we've been offered it for the first weekend of November in 2007. Although we'd like to move back earlier into October if it's available, the problem is that we need the entire camp and can't share with other groups.

(any decent camp seems to be booked often for years in advance, as many organizations have regular annual meetings)...We used to go to a VERY rustic state park(read: cold and dusty...as well as small...and we had to do the cooking) We were younger then. Jeri and Big Mick saw the last year there.

Quite happy to pitch in and cook, rather do that than hide the booze!

It's too bad it has to conflict with NOMAD, which is the first weekend in November in New Haven, CT. There are people who would like to go to both and have to choose.

Giok...we had to hide the b**ze ...*grin* ...at the cheap, cold, small camp, too. It had park rangers that came about at random times...and sometimes checked the trash/rubbish bins for contraband empties. We barely knew how to act at Ramblewood when we could have 'it' openly.

If I could get there, I'd happily be the Chief Cook....I love doing large groups. Oh well.

The dates are in stone, and you should quit worryin' about the alchohol issue. I say this as a fella who enjoys a drink. The Getaway isn't about drinking, it's about music and fellowship. There are simply a few guidelines one should follow and you may PM me and I will share them with you. I had absolutely no problem having a little libation and no one bothered us. You simply have to respect what the gathering is about, and that it is a camp run by a religious organization. If these gatherings, for you, are about heavy drinking, Getaway probably isn't the best place for you. But if you want to set up all night singing and enjoying one another, and all day in wonderful workshops, with a lot of crazy humor, make lifetime friends, and leave with memories you will carry all of your days, then this is the ONE. It is astounding, and will cause you much growth as a singer and musician.

Let me say again that having a drink is not a problem. You just have to use your head. Don't let this be the thing that keeps you away.

All the best,

Mick

LAY YOUR PLANS NOW for next October, mates. It is more fun than a barrel of folksingers. Well, about just as much fun. I believe there was some booze somewhere on the premises, but Mick would have to confirm that. I was very busy singing and rounding up pink flamingos, so didn't have time to worry about alcoholic issues. I wish the transport was less tiresome, because sitting with my knees under my chin listening to tape recordings about seatbelts is a stiff price to pay for the rich rewards of sleepless nights and rollicking days in such jolly company. Worth it, though...

I've been attending the Getaway since 1999 (every year but 2005), and this is the third Getaway location I've attended. It was by far the best location - and the most comfortable. The performance spaces are smaller, but I suppose we'll get creative as time goes along, and we'll work that issue out better. We found there were great acoustics in the corridor outside the women's bathroom in the retreat center building - and we also found that the rooms in the retreat center were the quietest and might be the best place for people who want quiet at night. Peace Lodge might have been a good gathering place for us rowdy Mudcatters who want to make music all night; but maybe the fact that we were spread apart, made it easier for non-Mudcatters to feel welcome to make music with us.

The camp is on the East River, an inlet of Chesapeake Bay just south of Annapolis (Maryland). The view was spectacular from the retreat center and dining hall. The water was like a mirror, surrounded by trees of all colors. Maybe when the Getaway is in early October in 2008, we should arrive earlier in the day on Friday and go sailing.

And it was so wonderful to spend the weekend with my good friends.

Just to clarify, the Getaway next year (2007) will again be the first weekend in November; in 2008 it will be the first weekend in October. We're very pleased about that -- wish it could happen next year, but the camp's schedule is quite full.

And Joe, just for the record, it's the West River.

Start saving your pennies and your leave time and join us next year AND the year after that!

Glad everybody had a good time -- I sure did!

Hello NOMAD. Rats!!!!!!!!! By the time I make it to the Getaway it will be gone. I'm already excited about next year's NOMAD. Someone said that in 2008 there wouldn't be a conflict. Does anyone really know that?

See ya in 2008, if that's the case.

Jerry, unless they move NOMAD to the first weekend of October there will definitely not be a conflict with NOMAD in 2008. FSGW has signed up for that weekend with the camp.

I'd really like to think that I could aim for October in 2008. It coincides with school holidays here in Oz, and maybe I can save up enough by then. I read all these Getaway threads, and I really wish I could come and meet some of you guys!

I'm going to keep it in mind and maybe start a Getaway account and put a bit in it each week. I'm sure it would be the experience of a lifetime!

Yes it sure would be! Money is the big question though - can I save up enough? It's something to try and go for, and I'll certainly be trying! I've been around Mudcat for 4 years, and in many ways I feel like this is my other family.

Every visiting 'catter I've met, it feels like I'm meeting old friends, so I just know it would be like that at the Getaway. And beds here and there would certainly be appreciated!

Ooh, I'm getting all excited now, and it's still nearly 2 years away!

The herd has grown and eagerly awaits your return. We have a blow up variety now and some strange things with "pockets" and places to put things.

Jock, dinna be an ass about sheep, then. We'll save you the best, if ye'll come over and save your best for Ewe, dear.

Hmmm, I see I'm a little late on the planning ahead. But I will be there if my less strenuous work life allows for it financially. I have a few ideas for that extra hour. . .

I'm still looking around to see if there's a list anywhere of who's (probably) coming to the Getaway this year and other details about travel, etc.

Did I miss the thread with a registration form, info on cost, what airport to fly into, transportation to the camp site, etc.?

I'm wondering how many catters live nearby and how many are coming from the fur regions (like the west coast of the US or across the pond).    Ferrara lives near DC, as I recall, and WYSYWIG is in So. PA, right?    Just trying to get my bearings here.

You old timers (Getaway-wise) are having way too much fun already.

Genie ;-)

No details on cost, or forms yet...just plans and ideas and trolling for info on who might attend.

(yep...Ferrara & I, her spouse, do live near DC.)

Genie--

We're not quite ready to handle registration for the 2007 FSGW Getaway just yet. The costs will be about the same as last year--and depend on (1) how much of the weekend you stay for, (2) whether you're a member of (or join) FSGW, (3) if you're a youngster or full-time student; in any case, the nost expensive possibility last year was less than $190 (a non-FSGW-member adult staying through Monday morning breakfast in a lower bunk). The nearest airport is probably BWI, and it has lots of relatively cheap flights. DCA is also pretty near, and IAD is acceptably close, especially if you hook up with an FSGW member for transportation. There is no public transit to the camp, but ride-sharing is a real likelihood, and lots of Mudcatters flew into BWI and carpooled from there.

We should have registration information finalized and a form posted sometime in August--certainly by Labo(u)r Day.

WYSIWYG is in Northernmost Pennsylvania and hasn't made it to the Getaway--yet. (Maybe this year, hint, hint. :-) ) However, there are at least 5 or 6 dozen Mudcatters who live in the DC area--heck, there are more than a dozen within a kilometer of my house. In fact, the presence of so many local Mudcatters is part of the reason we thought about inviting Mudcatters from far away in the first place.

Genie, I certainly hope you make it. I will be there, and you are one of the Mudcatters I have always wanted to meet. One of my goals is to get to Balboa Park again, only this time when you, Amos, and company are there and have a great singaround.

Mick, you're one of the catters I'm most looking forward to meeting too.   I hope I can make it to the Getaway (see my last post in the other thread), but I hope you can also make it so San Diego one of these days, especially when Amos and I are both Balboa Park "jammable."

Just name the day, Mick-me-boy, and the Park will be placed at your disposal. A house to call your own, and irregular meals, and a great adequacy of vile brown stuff. Mi casa, tu casa.
