And a couple of close friends of mine played with him as well.

I loved Maynard. He took it up a notch, maybe not as much as Dizzy, but a significant step. His early use of electronics from wah-wah to echo chambers was fandamtastic. Listening to Maynard play duets and trios with himself live....that was far out and for the time simply unbelievable. He took something from all that played with and came before and put it into his own special package. Then he added those MF touches which took it all soaring. I have lots of MF on CD now and I will miss him although we all know they don't live forever.

A true jazz great.

I met him once - his lip reminded me of cauliflower. It made me realize how much practice and hard work went into being a professional musician.

In 1957, as a senior in high school, I stood on the sidewalk outside the Metropole in New York and 'heard' Maynard and his band for 15 minutes. Too young to get in the door, but it felt good to be that close.

Had an LP of this guy, pretty wild stuff. Heard he lived in Yorkshire at one time, anyone know?

I saw Maynard's band at the 1971(?) Bickershaw Rock Festival. A great sound!

Listening to his large & loud band in the small 100 Club in Oxford Street, London several times in the 1970s probably accounts for the hearing aid I wear now!

very sad to hear. I was just looking through an old copy of a music magazine that advertised an appearance of his. I was kicking myself then for never seeing him live although Ihave some great live performance videos.
