13 Sep 06 - 04:52 AM (#1833342) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: Mrs.Duck The Rugby Club is being used but I'm not sure where that is - could be out near the school as aerial photo shows sports field. School does appear to be a long way out but maybe the shuttle bus will be in action to transport folk. |
13 Sep 06 - 06:12 AM (#1833369) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: GUEST Yep, there's to be 'another' shuttle bus I understand. The admin cock-up by the Civic Hall (not the fest) regarding not re-newing appropriate licenses has meant all concerts for that venue have 'transferred' to the school - but the Civic are supposed to be sorting a bus as some sort of recompense. It's a blessing in some ways, the Civic was shortly due for complete gutting, re-build, re-furb and would be lost to the fest shortly anyway (for one, two years???). As Prince Henry's had been alienated to the fest by a 'previous school regime', it's allowed the present regime and the fest organisers to re-establish the school site as an integral part of the fest...and if all works smoothly this year, will surely pave the way to saving the situation when the Civic has to bow out till re-built? For the 'healthy' types, it's a 10 minute or so hike to get to from town centre - much easier 'return' when both excited (post-concert) and drunk (post-alcohol). Whilst the Bowling Green 'inside' is now 'gone' (owners sold up), the area outside for dancing is still a 'go-er' - no worries there, I'm told.... and it's not as if Otley is short of pubs! Plenty left to go at! Have fun! |

Organisational cockups (some not caused by the festival organisers e.g. Civic Hall licensing problems, Bowling Green closed for refurbishment, and some venues too remote) did detract. However, the campsite minibuses and refreshment facilities were superb as usual. Good to see George Papavgeris, Ray Padget & Mick from Hull. Lessons must be learnt for next year! Bob vG |

18 Sep 06 - 10:18 AM (#1837398) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: MoorleyMan Yes it was generally a great weekend I thought. All the booked guests I saw were superb, bar two or three who were still pretty good or worth seeing, and I only encountered one "no-show-er" over the whole time. OK there were one or two other cockups - what festival ever is free of 'em?! - but in this case the blame shouldn't be laid at the door of the organisers, who in Otley do learn lessons and still get so many essential things so right. Good to see so many familiar and friendly faces too, I'm sorry not to have made it to the Shellbacks' sing (venue changed!), but some good singing was still to be had - much better this year I might say due to the move of some singarounds into the less smoky parts of the venues concerned. Here's to number 16 ! |

19 Sep 06 - 03:39 AM (#1838044) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: GerryMc Bowling Green closed for refurbishment Bowling Green gone for good I'm afraid. By the time next year's festival comes around it will be a block of flats. With the exception of Prince Henry's school, all the other venues are in town. And it's less than a mile walk from Otley to the school. Surely that's not gonna kill anyone? And there were busses. |

19 Sep 06 - 07:00 AM (#1838148) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: HipflaskAndy Don't quite follow you, 8pints???? You give any 'reader' on here the impression that the festival was in some way, by their fault, disorganised. You say....'Organisational cockups (some not caused by the festival organisers e.g. Civic Hall licensing problems, Bowling Green closed for refurbishment, and some venues too remote) did detract.' What exactly WERE the c-ups you think the festival WAS responsible for? 'did detract'???? I'd rather focus on praising the fest for managing to overcome set-backs than attempt to set any tone of chastisement. To set the record straight.... ALL those you actually listed were NOT the festival's fault at all. Civic Hall staff informed the fest organisers of THEIR c-up re the licensing just over a week before the fest - the fest having booked, as usual, a year in advance! The Civic staff member responsible held up his hand admitting full responsibility and asked how they could recompense for their error and subsequently negotiated use of Prince Henry's (the only other large enough venue in Otley) on the fest's behalf as an substitute. The Bowling Green landlord informed the organisers that he had sold the pub on the same day as the Civic Hall bombshell. No indication was given, to the organisers, by the venue of any such impending sale before that point. Both major blows occuring AFTER the programme had gone to print. Hardly the organisers gaff, eh? Remoteness of venues? I can only assume you mean Prince Henry's - that being furthest out? By Otley's more usual 'compressed-feel' standard, may be. Geographically however, much less ground to cover (for want of one example off top-of-head) than a hike at Whitby Fest from the Middle Earth to the WhitbyRugby Club venue. Merely helps keep fit and makes one ready for the next pint, eh? Less of a hike than from Sidmouth's Bedford up to the Bulverton - oh, so many other examples too...... The Civic also promised to foot the bill for any extra expenses incurred, for example the additional bus-run made neccessary by THEIR c-up. 'Lessons must be learnt for next year!' you say? A little unkind, I feel. Deep sigh - Duncan ....who was there the whole time - enjoying the whole fest experience, from the pub sessions to the food hall, and concerts - from Thurs (opening the first concert to a packed Korks), right through to Sunday's big finish to a jam-packed, crammed (but apparently remote!)Prince Henrys - where they had to turn away many at the door, right from the final concert's outset!!! Huge raps and thanks to all the stewards, staff & organisers for yet again staging a great and successful festival. Cheers! - D |
19 Sep 06 - 07:11 AM (#1838160) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: 8_Pints Hi Duncan, There were some points that need to be improved upon but the list I included specifically mentioned these were not the organisers' fault (perhaps exept the last item). I shall PM you with details. I do appreciate the hard work that must go into running such a festival particularly under the trying circumstances. So my thanks to those concerned, and I hope for a better experience next year. Bob vG |

19 Sep 06 - 07:52 AM (#1838180) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: Emma B I didn't get home until Monday but had a smashing time. With so many disparate venues it is inevitable that some cock-ups would occur - Pub landlords getting times or days of more informal sessions confused etc but the bus service was magnificant continuing as did they did until early morning throughout the festival. The singarounds in the pubs were excellent as usual; Otley does seem to be a festival that has the combination of "fringe" and festival just about right. My particular thanks also to the camp site "management" which was effcient without ever being officious. |
19 Sep 06 - 08:49 AM (#1838220) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going? From: GerryMc There were some points that need to be improved upon then do share your opinions. I think there is a bit of trend on this 'ere forum to moan and whinge a lot. If festivals are that bad, why bother attending? I have never been to a 'bad' festival yet. If it aint the showers it's the venues, if aint the bus service it's the food. I may be slightly biased but I think it was a damn good festival and they really do take some organising. Big up to all involved in organising a great weekend :-) |
19 Sep 06 - 09:03 AM (#1838238) Subject: RE: Otley Folk Festival 2006 - who's going?
