Given the level of attendance at sessions in Beverley throughout August, perhaps we should follow the example of some clubs and cancel them all for that month. At least we, and the licensees, would know the score from the start.

the format for the next few weeks is (or I think it is):

Next Sunday (10th) - Christmas do at Hodgson's. Bring food
Sunday 17th - session in The Sun
Sunday 24th - not sure but I expect it will be cancelled?
Sunday 31st - cancelled?
Monday 1st Jan 2007 - Monk's Walk
Sunday 7th Jan - Monk's Walk

and then as per usual starting in the Sun on Sunday 14th Jan

That is correct Rog.

Lot of people away over the New Year, but a lot of the regular Beverley and 'ull Sessioneers asked me last year to organise summat on the New years day.

Judging by the support for a singaround/playaround this year on the New Years day a democratic decision was taken to go with the Monday and cancell the Sunday.

As the bowl'd Rog says we are back to normal? on the following Sunday which will be the first sunday of the month session and of course will be at "Monks Walk"..........now are we all clear?

just a quick update...............there is some work to be done but it will not be in the actual pub! there are plans to redevelop existing cottages which are almost derelict now which are in the car park, and a new building on the beer garden to give the pub another room as with our weather we cant use the beer garden very often......this room will be used as part of the pub for everyday use as the room with the fire isnt big enough for some things we book in now.......ie small parties, music sessions etc...and the kitchen is already there but it is going to be refurbished....the 2 new cottages are been rebuilt on the existing foundations.....the pub will carry on as it is with little disruption as possible.....hope this clarifies things for you regards specky

We are at the Thompsons Arms in Flaxton now rather than that nice Sam Smiths Blacksmiths Arms pub that you played at.

As an aside it is now a very sad shadow of it's former self.

Lindy - whose wedding you played at - left the pub a while back having had enough and it is now being run by reliefs who couldn't give a #*%& and it is very little used. Apparently Sam Smith's are having great difficulty finding someone to run it. With no proper kitchen to cater and no chance of refilling the pub with music etc and with drinking and driving being what it is these days it is not a great proposition.

Ben (former landlord) and I and some friends who have very fond memories of those good musical times had an evening of reminiscences about it the other night when they came round to our house the other night for a gathering. Still I suppose we wouldn't have still have our livers left...

Sad.

Much too young to retire, Mick. ;)

A shame about the Blacksmiths, Nick. I very much enjoyed my time there. I hope that Ben is happy, but it's very sad to see an excellent pub and music venue go down the tube like that.

And younger people than Mick have been known to retire! See you on Sunday, Mick. Our lass'll be in tow an' all (after our brief sojourn in Whitters).

I'm afraid that I won't make the Tuesday evening session in the Monk's tonight. However, I'm sure that lots of others will - last week we had three fiddlers, two mandolinists, two harpists, 1 accordian, 1 concertina, 1 banjo, three guitarists and more whistlers than you could shake a stick at. Oh, and lots of singers too.

Some of the above were the same people!

Always room for more - and audience too.

The Slubber's Arms in Huddersfield had similar, notorious toilets. Following a refurb they mounted one of the cisterns and pull chain on the bar wall as a reminder - it is still there to this day.

The Tuesday Monks walk session is in the pool room at the moment and they're playing loud music in the main bar. The accoustics are actualy quite good but it is a bit cut off. If it weren't for the enormous pool table in there it would probably be ok. :(

Thanks to all who attended, nice to see lot's of new faces.

Just a bit of information in responce to the countless request for info about the Beverley festival and "Monks Walk".

Myself and Sir Rog will be co-hosting singarounds at the "Monks Walk" both Saturday and Sunday of the festival.

Saturday from 13.30 hrs to whenever

Sunday from 13.30. hrs to whenever

I have been informed by Lorraine (landperson of the "Monks") that as last year a marquee will be set up in the bear garden. We will have the option if weather and minster bells permit of using the inside of the pub.

So if you sing, twang, strum, pick, blow, fiddle, whistle, drum, dance, monologue or just come and join in and or listen you will sure of a warm welcome at the "Monks"

See "Beverley festival fringe" thread for further detail and information about the festival

The Tuesday session is still going in the Monks walk. The first part of the session is slow tunes and reading from dots aimed at beginners who want to build up confidence to play in sessions. It's in the pool room at the moment.

Tuesday steady tunes and learners session in Monks walk is tonight. The last couple of weeks sessioners have outnumbered people in the main bar. It's a pity that enormous pool table is in the room It would probably be a good room if it weren't for that. If they are leaving the pool table there they should let the session back into the other bar.

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley

We was glad of that pool room this weekend !!

Me and Sir Rog used the pool room at "Monks" during the festival when rain stopped play and the pub was heaving with Morris dancers. We managed to get over twenty five people in there with comfort and indeed they have a big cover for the table which is handy for glasses, instruments etc.The added bonus is the gas fire that works, which was handy for drying us all of!!

Belated thanks to Lorraine and staff for all their help(see Beverley fringe thread)

Subject: RE: Monks walk session beverley

The room is OK it's just that when you are sat arround the table playing it's so big it forms a barrier between people and spoils the atmosphere. There was the same problem at the sun when the pool table was moved into the room music sessions used to be in. There was a time we were in the Sun three times a week but you won't see us there now.

Graham & Jo

Following their appreciation of the sessions and the folk festival, maybe the new people at The Sun will realise what an aberration it is to have that space occupied by a pool table. We all know that it is a recent thing put in by a very temporary landlord who wanted to play with his disreputable mates.

Everyone else knows that it has no place in such a pub but the new people inherited it the status quo - maybe now they will see the light and get rid of it.

Due to the lack of support in the summer months - holidays/loads of festivals etc.- It may be worth while looking to cancelling this session from June to September, what do you all think?

There is some merit in Mick's suggestion. I get the impression that many people are folked out after the festival and then they go off to other festivals and/or holidays during July and August. A break for those two months might be a good idea - I know that many clubs close over the Summer.
