Lyr/Chords Req: Beautiful Katie / K-K-K-Katy

01 Mar 99 - 06:30 PM (#60917)
Subject: Beautiful Katie
From: lyda.woods@aspect.com

Does anyone know where I can get the lyrics and chord progressions for "Beautiful Katie"?

The song goes:

Kukukukatie,....beautiful Katie,

You're the only Gugugugirl that I adore,

When the Mumumoon shines, over the ?????

I'll be knocking at your Kikikikitchen door!

(For those of you who think I can't type, I'm trying to show that the singer is supposed to STUTTER on key sounds!)

Thanks a bunch!

Lyda

Here you go, two verses included:

Jimmy was a soldier brave and bold
Katey was a maid with hair of gold.
Like an act of fate, Kate was standing at the gate
Watching all the boys on dress parade.
Jimmy with the girls was such a gawk,
Stuttered every time he tried to talk,
Still that night at eight, he was there at Katie's gate,
Stuttering to her this love sick cry.

K-K-K Katie, Beautiful Katie,
You're the only g-g-g-girl that I adore,
When the m-m-m-moon shines, over the cowshed,
I'll be waiting at the k-k-k-kitchen door.

No-one ever was so nice and neat,
No-one could be just as cute and sweet,
That's what Jimmy thought when the wedding ring he bought
Now he's off to France the Foe to meet.
Jimmy thought he'd like to take chance.
See if he could make the Kaiser dance,
Stepping to a tune all about the slivery moon,
This is what they hear in far off France,

Chorus again.

I have a copy of the sheet music at home from that era. The music says on the cover that this is "The Sensation Stuttering song that the Sailors and Soldiers Sing"

The copy is also reduced in size as a "War Edition" to conserve paper.

I don't know how to send a file in Mudcat so I will send you a midi file of the melody via email.

Katy was a maid with hair of gold.
Like an act of fate,
Kate was standing at the gate
Watching all the boys on dress parade.
Jimmy with the girls was just a gawk,
Stuttered every time he tried to talk.
Still that night at eight,
He was there at Katy's gate,
Stuttering to her this lovesick cry:

CHORUS: K-K-K-Katy, beautiful Katy,
You're the only g-g-g-girl that I adore.
When the m-m-m-moon shines over the cowshed,
I'll be waiting at the k-k-k-kitchen door.

No one ever looked so nice and neat.
No one could be just as cute and sweet.
That's what Jimmy thought,
When the wedding ring he bought.
Now he's off to France the foe to meet.
Jimmy thought he'd like to take chance,
See if he could make the Kaiser dance.
Stepping to a tune,
All about the silv'ry moon,
This is what they hear in far off France: CHORUS

Words and music by Geoffrey O'Hara, Army song Leader (born in Chatham, Ontario, in 1882)
"Lovingly dedicated to K-K-K-Katy Richardson, who inspired this song."
copyright 1918, by Leo Feist, Inc.

The sheet music bills the song as "The Sensational Stammering Song Success Sung by the Soldiers and Sailors."
The Great Song Thesaurus says French lyrics for this song were written by A. Bollaert.
I'd love to see the French version.

Wow! Earlier this evening, I was sitting here doing my email duty, when a song pops into my head & will NOT go away! Yep! You guessed it, K-K-K-Katie, . . . I used to sing it to a terriffic lady by the same name who was in a nursing home where I worked. She had Alzheimers' & had very little ability to communicate. She always brightened up when I sang it to her. I did the "c-c-c-cowshEd," too. With the nursing home set it's fun to sing the "name" songs to the person with that name--there are lots of them.
The old Irish-American songs are still fun to sing!

Haruo,

Wow! I wish I'd thought that up myself when I was a kid! Of course, Katy disliked the song anyway, but to call her a Cow's Head! (Would that have been a Freudian typo?) Nowadays I don't think that way, of course. But as a kid, that would have been pure torturous gold. ;-)

I stuttered heavily as a child and still sometimes do. These songs may be fun to sing but personally I find them offensive. There's no way that the stuttering parts aren't meant to be funny.

I'm sure someone will say why can't we laugh at our problems but I'll bet you anything that person never stuttered.

Quite without intention, I have stumbled across this thread and, at this moment, as I try to type, tears are pouring from my eyes as I sing aloud that which I as a preschooler and my mother sang together nearly sixty years ago. Key of F.

To "radriano" (message above dated 02 May 03) I can say only this: I stuttered terribly as a child and sometimes stutter and stammer like there was no tomorrow. My mommy stuttered. My poppy stammered. I would give the sight of both my aged eyes to hear their voices stuttering and stammering away today.

Be not offended, radriano, at a gentle and sweet little song that my mommy's daddy brought back from WWI. Grampa, a stutterer, served with the AEF in Europe and won, thereby, his citizenship as an American. Three Purple Hearts. Bronze Star. Silver Star. He was gassed at Chateau Thierry but kept the 9mm Luger that, the day before, he took off the German officer he killed with his hands.

I still have the Luger and fire it every few years. I still have the stammer and use it periodically, especially when I get excited.

So what offends you, dear soul?

Dear guestInspector,

Kindly allow me my opinion. I am offended because this song is meant to be humorous and I find nothing humorous about stuttering. When you say, "I would give the sight of both my aged eyes to hear their voices stuttering and stammering away today" what you really mean is that you would love to see them again, not that you love their stuttering. A "gentle and sweet little song" it is not although I do not dispute your right to interpret it that way. Your memories are your own. Do not insist that I share them. All of my relatives on my mother's side where killed in World War II. They were not soldiers but civilians who were murdered. Please spare me your maudlin memories of a horrific part of history.

Radriano..my sympathies for the suffering of your family members.
I am glad you are here and glad you are able to find joy in song.
On the other hand, sometimes the amazing power of music is able to
erase halting speech. I knew a friend who had many difficulties in
speaking, but was able to sing smoothly and flawlessly. Perhaps it
is a different part of the brain used for singing than for speaking?
Or perhaps because the lyrics can be predicted and practiced. I saw
a documentary recently where stutterers wer able to learn to control
their breathing mainly by placing a belt-like band around their
chest to help them control their breathing and speaking. this was
a Swedish method and had incredibly positive results. the people
in the program were able after a couple of weeks of practice, to
stand on a street corner and give a speech to passing strangers!!
No small accomplishment..more info here:

Thank you, Open Mike. Talking and singing are indeed operated by different parts of the brain. Some stuttering therapies actually suggest that stutterers "sing it" instead of "say it" - of course, this is not only impractical but inappropriate(sp?) for most circumstances.

I went through a stuttering therapy program at the University of Chicago that literally re-taught a person to talk. The idea was that once you started gaining positive results you could replace old speech patterns with new ones. It was ultimately a study in futility. For a majority of the people involved in the program, myself included, stuttering was eradicated temporarily. The problem is that stuttering is as mental as it is physical. In my particular case I soon resumed stuttering because the cause of my probem was never resolved. It's kind of like going on a crash diet to lose weight. You can lose the weight but once you resume old eating habits the weight comes back. The only way to keep excess weight off is to either perpetually be on a diet or to figure out why you feel the need to eat so much.

I have always loved the song k-k-k katie... (I was looking up the lyrics as I am considering to name my little girl (due early July) Kaitlyn (katie/katy for short) and am sure that if I do that I will be singing this to my little treasure. And as for the stuttering. I once had a friend (who stuttered, who got embarrassed himself. He was talking to a lady (while doing his work duties) and as she was talking to him, she was stuttering worse than he did, he berated her for making fun of his stutter then was left with egg on his face when he found out she wasn't making fun of him, she just happened to have a stutter that was worse than his. And my dear uncle used to say that they wouldn't let him in the army because by the time he could say h-h-h-halt w-who g-goes t-there it would be too late.

Can't remember the name of the person who wrote that they were offended by the song, all I can say is that I'm sorry for you that you feel that way, that you have never come to terms with your unique way to speak.

I think the song is very sweet and I sing it almost everyday to my Irish Wolfhound, Kadee... she loves the song and I can just see the pure delight in her face and eyes the minute I start singing it.

Also a comment on the gentleman who said he'd love to hear his mothers voice again.. I remember my grandmother singing "Go West Young Man" and she'd play that picture record on that old phonograph.. when I was a little girl I used to think she was just silly, but since she's been gone from my life for 6 years now, I would just melt to hear here singing that song and dancing around with me again!

I may not be as old as some that have commented on here, but I do get it, that life is just way too short and sweet to let silly songs upset me.

Re the stutterers and PC issue, I don't see this song as making fun of stutterers. I think it's sort of gently teasing a guy who was so shy and nervous around GIRLS that he would stutter whenever he tried to talk to one, especially one he was "sweet on."   The protagonist (?) in this song is not nececessarily a stutterer in other situations, including the kind of frightening situations he might find himself in as a soldier. He is just very insecure when it comes to approaching the object of his affection.

Flash, that Mel Blanc recording sounds like he was singing it as Porky Pig.
Now, I can understand why Porky and Thylvethter and Ewmew Fudd may offend some people as not PC, because they were characters for whom one of the principal jokes was their speech defects. Put I don't see that as the case with "Jimmy" in this song; the joke is his shyness and nervousness around women he's attracted to.

Rita, I love the "C-c-c-cootie" version!
