Just read that Martin Sheen is enrolled at NU Galway for the fall term. Courses in philosophy, English lit & oceanography. His mum hails from Co Tipperary, and received an honorary degree from Galway last march.

Regardless of what one might think of his politics, the man obviously has gumption!

Martin Sheen is a committed enviromentalist, so he must be some sort of OK.

I think Iain Paisley is about the only person who consistently refers to the Republic as Eire.

As a standing monument to Dev's convoluted thinking, particularly where the country or the language is involved, the Constitution, having identified the name of the country as above, then goes on to refer to it in both English and Irish as "Eire". Just to make things worse, one or other lot in power at various stages didn't want the country to be called Eire, so civil servants have had to keep on insisting on it being called Ireland. The internationally recognised abbreviation EIR (as on cars travelling abroad) was changed to IRL (which led some people in France to ask me once if I was from Israel).

Now apparently there's another change of policy, so that more civil servants in various international organisations will be even more confused and have to waste more time changing nameplates etc.

..and that's without even mentioning that there are those who, apart from objecting to anyone using "Éire" , themselves refer to the Republic of Ireland as "The Free State"!
