So far I have: G D G When the roses bloom in dixieland I am coming back to you D When the birds are singing music grand to the sweetest girl I ever knew C G C I am saving up my money to buy a little cabin home for two G D G When the roses bloom in dixieland I am coming back to you. But I'm not sure about the "C's" They don't sound quite right to me. I've scoured the net and check the Mudcat threads to no avail. Can someone lend a hand to my ear? Thanks M Can someone |

10 Sep 06 - 08:01 PM (#1831512) Subject: RE: Chord Req: When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland From: GUEST,Pete Peterson I agree with Guest #2. The Carter Family never (in the Gilbert and Sullivan sense) used [2] chords; it is one of the things that gave them their distinctive sound. When we (the Orpheus Supertones) recorded it recently (Mudthumper MM-0030) we did it with the chords given above. So did the Red Clay Ramblers in "Songs of the Carter Family" and so did the Original Carter Family. Don't know too many recordings of this great song! |

Sorry, Pete, but that's the way it is--G&S win out-- |

11 Sep 06 - 03:14 PM (#1832051) Subject: RE: Chord Req: When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland From: Gene The Blue Sky Boys also recorded it...a little more up tempo.. and they clearly put in the [2] chord.. PM me or email: cn8gv9@aim.com for mp3 of BSB === the Carter Family version may be an AURICAL ILLUSION... one time i hear the [2] chord -- next time i dont... the vocal seems to have the [2] chord but not in another place and the instrumental doesn't seem to go there????? |

11 Sep 06 - 03:49 PM (#1832065) Subject: RE: Chord Req: When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland From: GUEST,Pete Peterson I've just listened to the Carter Family recording (Bear Family set CD 2) about three times. I can't hear the 2 chord. M.Ted-- can we agree that the 2 chord is not in the guitar part, meaning that it's in the voices if it's there at all? (Next step would be to figure out the notes sung on the two notes of "sweetest" by the group) BTW according to my tuner, the song is in Bb. Maybelle is certainly playing C shapes, which means she tuned her guitar down a full tone to play in Bb, rather than playing G capoed up 3. I am fairly embarrassed to realize how much I straightened out the timing before teaching the song to the rest of our band, and also altered "coming BACK to you" into "coming HOME to you." Oops. |

11 Sep 06 - 03:57 PM (#1832072) Subject: RE: Chord Req: When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland From: Big Mick Pete, you made me laugh straight out loud with your comment about being embarassed at straightening out Mother Maybelle. Funny stuff. I hope all is well. Been too long, especially given we live so close. Mick |

12 Sep 06 - 12:26 AM (#1832356) Subject: RE: Chord Req: When The Roses Bloom In Dixieland From: M.Ted Sorry, Pete, I hear the 2 in the guitar part. And I worked it out by matching the chords along with the recording on my synth, which is coldly precise about pitch. Anyway the Carter's wouldn't have done a 2 chord in the vocals over a 1 chord on the guitar--that would be way too bent for them. Maybe we have different recordings, though--Still, this is a great, and unfairly neglected song. Do it as you please--I'll never tell;-) |
