Now the internet has given us access to local folk music outside normal radio range, some stations must be more popular than others. Which are your favourites? I'm drawn to BBC Radio Shropshire and BBC Radio York, but will try your recommendations.

A couple that I listen to are Mike Regenstreif's Folk Roots/Folk Branches on CKUT in Montreal and Pablo Meshugi's No Time To Tarry Here on KDHX in St. Louis.

Folk Roots/Folk Branches is on Thursday mornings. You can listen live or download several months worth of shows as podcasts.

For No Time To Tarry Here, you have to listen live on Sunday afternoons.

I can't get it in St. Paul, Minnesota, where I live, but when I visit northern Wisconsin, I like to listen to WOJB, Hayward. I especially like their Honky Tonk show on Saturday evenings.

And when I visit St. Louis, MO, I listen to KWMU.

I used to like the GMR folk programme (Ali O'Brien) until those b*gg*rs pulled the plug. I don't get much time to listen usually, but I occasionally dip in and listen for a while to some of the local BBC folk shows, including N Yorks, Radio Ulster Folk Club, Johnny Coppin (Glos), Celtic Heartbeat (Wales) and some of the Scots/Gaelic ones (can't remember their names for the mo').

Make It Folky

A monthly show on 209 Radio, a community radio station in Cambridge, UK. It's presented by Christian Mayne a real enthusiast, and covers the traditional music of Britain and Ireland. The shows are always an interesting mix of old and new, and well worth a listen IMHO.

The show is available for listening online, downloading and as a podcast at...

Radio Britfolk floats my boat, though it's not strictly 'local'!
