Loughstock, Norn Iron gathering 2007

Subject: Loughstock, Norn Iron gathering 2007
From: Fibula Mattock

Hello all,

The lovely Giok and the equally lovely Leadfingers have been asking about Loughstock in 2007 (which I am led to believe is being christened 007 - as witty as expected, but slightly misleading as it'll be the 5th one).

Anyway, I've just moved to the charmingly idyllic and pastoral environs of East London and am a bona fide Oyster card owner which I believe qualifies me to make rude remarks about all you provincial types who live somewhere like *snort* Hull. To cut a long story short, the hugely crippling rent I now pay means that finances - and new job reponsibilties - may curtail my February wanderings, but there's nowt to stop you going to Portaferry on your own - you should all know the way by now.

Dates suggested are 10th Feb or so, which sounds just grand, and I'll leave you to argue with yerselves over whether or not that clashes with naked morris sides at dawn (oh no, wait, that's Eurogathering!). So yes, please plot and plan, and I will tease you with the will-she-or-won't-she make an appearance and play one and a half tunes badly.

Oh yes, previous Loughstock are illustrated on the photos pages and threads are here:
Loughstock 4-score
Loughstock III
Loughstock II
Loughstock
(Usual thread jumbled-uppedness applies.)

It's 007 as it's licensed to thrill, but not to lock out innocent limping old men!
So all those interested in going that weekend, please let me know, and we'll work out a cunning plan [no turnips]

At a quick glance , it looks as though I will be arriving at Belfast International mid afternoon Friday . leaving shortly after lunch Monday - I will be hiring a car (At Great Expense) for the weekend and am only too pleased to hang around to pick people up for a return trip to Barholme - I will NOT Be a lot more expensive than a taxi , and a LOT easier than the bus !! PM me for seats in the car !!

Hi Khatt - Wapping (the estate bit, not the posh warehouse conversion bit, can't afford the yuppie lifestyle on a lecturer's salary, more's the pity). Once I get properly unpacked and settled I'll have to meet up with all the Catters inside Greater London!

I'll try and get to Portaferry too, although it's my family's turn to get me and Frank Mills for Christmas, so returning in February makes for quite a lot of time in Co. Down!

When you've decided you're coming, and as you get your bookings done and your flights booked, perhaps you could give the details to me, then there will be an overview, if we need to co-ordinate transport in Ulster. Date and time of arrival in Belfast should do, number of party, and any travel arrangements made, like hiring a car and space available therein if possible. Those arriving via Stanstead might need to coordinate that end, but let us know what you arrange.
Do remember how much space instruments can take up in vehicles!!
Thanks

After Leadfingers' notification on another thread I'm thinking of coming along--I looked at some photos from a previous event and it looks like a lot of fun. I need to discuss this with the people I play with, in case there's something on that weekend, so won't be able to confirm for a week or two.

What's that instrument Mooman is playing in the photos--is it a small banjo (I'd love something like that!)?

Is anyone else coming from Dublin?

Cheers, Don Conlan

Hello Folks,

sorry for not having answered your mail yet, Liz - and Mary (ok, yours just arrived minutes ago ...). At the moment, we have high season in my business (car insurance), and with loads of extra time (last week, I had finished the official 40 hours/week on Wednesday around 11am ..., I ended last week after roughly 110 hours of work). So there was not much time left for mudcatting ...

Fibs: an Oyster card? I thought you got a Whelks diploma in B.u.H. ;-)
Giok: you do not qualify as innocent (only for limping and old ;-))

Liz: might there be a chance of visiting Hotel Draper on the Thursday night? I'll try to get this organized despite not having time for organizing it ...

How many will there be for Sunday Lunch at Barholme?? I need to calculate chocolate quantities.

Liz, I never did pancakes - I only helped "My Guru always says" once, the other two times I was at Loughstock there were no pancakes (or they were hidden from me).
I'll be there for Sunday Lunch. That means: double the quantity ;-)

Liz, are you and Paul hiring a car? If so, I'll share ;-)

Terry: I will be at Barholm Friday night to Monday morning as well.
Btw, all people staying at Barholm: please order breakfast - Linda said she will only give ME breakfast if there are enough orders ...

Nice one, Skarpi; are you heading back home on the Monday morning?
You should stick around for a few weeks, you know... the famous hat/cap should soak in a bit more of that good Co. Down air... ;-) Say hello to Rosa for me as well...

Send me a PM with your normal e-mail addy, Peter, if you will; I'm not much around here, neither, and although there are many here who will testify to my tardiness in the fine art of the sent e-mail, having your addy makes the odds of an oul' bit of correspondence, drastically slighter on my account.

Anybody thinking of hanging around for a week or so, should try and hit for the Donegal Gaeltacht. The sessions will be mighty, and the pubs will be warm - the perfect antedote to the shorter evenings, and the Atlantic gales.

'Tis there you'll find me...'

After the few days in Clare, of course

It has been suggested that we run a proper ceilidh on the Saturday night, or a concert, and that we all learn either the same party piece, or we draw lots for groups of 2 or 3 to learn a song and do it on the night.

Once that is confirmed it is intended to ask for names of those who want to do a spot. Once we have that I will divide the number of voulunteers by the time available, say from 9PM till Midnight, leaving space for floor spots and unscheduled guests.

hello all,

When I was home over Christmas I asked Frank about the Quarterdeck (back room) on the Saturday. He doesn't manage the bar anymore, but said it might be okay. There's a guy doing food in the Quarterdeck nowadays, so I don't know the chances yet. I didn't get a chance to ask Grainne (Frank's daughter) as it was too busy when I was in over Christmas, but I've emailed them and am waiting for a reply.

An alternative to the Quarterdeck is the beauifully refurbished conservatory at the hostel, which has amazing acoustics and the bonus of cheaper drink as you get to bring your own! (Plus less distance to fall into bed, and no chances of being locked out! :)

(p.s. I will probably be partly present - now-ya-see-me, now-ya-don't - as my best friend is expecting her first baby and I'll be spending lots of quality girly time with her as I only get to see her when I make it over to Norn Iron.)

I'm just butting in to your thread again to say the week-end in Ballyvaughan I referred to earlier is actually on the week-end commencing 16th February this year, which means that anyone who was staying on in Ireland after Loughstock could head down there.

Ballyvaughan is a village near the Burren in North-West Clare. Each year around mid February it is invaded by a group of musicians and singers from various parts of Ireland, England and Wales who indulge in Music, singing, drinking, watching rugby and various other social activities. There are many cottages to rent in the area if people are thinking of coming along, although many of these will be booked by now.

Just need to know what time most people will be flying back on Monday - and could I scrounge a lift back to the station?

PM if you wish.

I wil be travelling with an average size ruc sac and possibly a guitar. I have never been on a passenger plane before - what do I do? I assume rucsac would be hand luggage therefore what would guitar come under?

I may treat myself to a cheap argos one so I won't cry if it gets damaged. It won't sound as good, but I'm not playing for money.

I haven't hired a car yet, as I don't know how many people are travelling in our party! I thought it might be easier to get a cab.

Anyone wanting to stay over at the Draper's please let us know numbers!

Gizmo, if you're travelling Easyjet like us then you will almost certainly have to check the guitar in as hold baggage as they don't have much room in the cabins so make sure you have a hard case. Also be aware of the weight limits they impose.

Got that half sorted. Flights are now booked. Will like to meet with you and Squeak at Stratford for coach if that's alright?

As for guitar, I will buy hard case, but will take a fairly light guitar - I tend to do cheap and cheerful anyway. Allowed 20 kgs no questions, but extend up to a max of 35 KGs if it does go over. Or I could bring the 3/4 size nylon. Will decide at weekend.

Got accomodation sorted just now - I'll be at Adairs!

Paul, a few years ago it was 48 pounds for the cab - single fare. Makes 96 pounds for the return trip.
Up to 4 passengers per cab (gets very cramped then), i.e. 12 pounds per person single, 24 return.
With 3 passengers it's 16 pounds single, 32 return.

(plus price increasements over the last few years ...)

Fiddlers just confirmed - back room available from 9pm on the Saturday - open to General Public and his cohort also though, so start practising yer autographs.

I'll be over Friday evening sometime (these real jobs get in the way of early flights). If anyone needs a lift from George Best Belfast City (harbour) Airport that evening we can probably swing it.

We'll be in the Fiddlers Gulliver, as we won't get there till early evening it may not liven up till a bit late. You can also find people at the Barholm, which is the big building with the conservatory on it's right hand side, almost dead ahead as you come off the ferry.

My attempt at being laid back and cool has diminished now, as well as the illusions I had of being in control and organised.

I have finally got onto my backside and sorted out my coach tickets to and from the airport this end.

I have now just printed the e-tickets.

I managed last night to restring my black guitar, so that I could pack away my white one. Instead of bubble wrap, I put it into a padded guitar case, then put that (very tight squeeze) into the hard guitar case. A bit of tumbling of the case will not harm the guitar.

I found my passport (for ID), in the place it should be, so that was good. But am I packed yet?

No. Will I be packed by tonight - doubt it. Will I be panicking at 6 am tomorrow morning, I think yes!

It will be my first for lots of things this weekend, including going to Ireland, and flying in a passenger jet plane.

I'm sooooooooooooooooooo excited.

I hope Mary and Skarpi and Mrs Skarpi managed to land ok over here, the snow seems to be causing some interference with transport.

See everyone soon.

Been back a couple of hours, journey from Stansted to home took as longer than the flight from Belfast to Stansted!

Had a fantastic time, even though I didn't get to sing much and Ireland lost the rugby in the last minutes.

It was a lovely chance to reunite with Skipjack, Oaklet, MudGuard, Skarpi and Giok, but even better to meet for the first time with Guna (spelling??) aka Mrs Skarpi, Bente and Maryrrf.

I'm now engaged in trying to translate Icelandic sleeve notes on the CD that we 'acquired' in the raffle and eating the chocolates!

Thanks to everyone who helped prepare the meal we had Sunday evening - I'm afraid the pancake workshop never happened, but I can vouch for MudGuard's prowess at mashing swedes (red turnip or rutabaga) and chopping apples - although nothing exceeds his expertise at emptying food pots!

Barholme was also home to some divers who were training in the Lough and I managed to walk out of the front door on Saturday, and straight into my fantasy ~ 3 fit blokes dressed in rubber!

LTS - running a cold bath now...

Been back for a few hours meself and I am fecking knackered - unfortunately did not get to bring some fecking whiskey back with me due to EEC regulations. Other than thet the flight was good, and I can honestly say that I'm not afraid of flying, and I prefer it to coach travel.

I recommend Adairs to anyone who wants a good breakfast and no washing up afterwards. It was lovely.

Thank you Herge for the compliment, I'm glad you liked it.

For me there was no low point at the weekend, apart from tummy muscle pains from laughing so much. It was excellent meeting everyone of the catters and the non-cats too. And the rubber men...and the rugby players....

Sparkles is still upset at Skarpi for ignoring her. She is downstairs as I write with the sulks.

Great weekend!

Unfortunately we had to leave early to get back to Dublin to see the match.

After Saturday's session lasting into the wee hours in Barholme we didn't make it back to our B&B (Different Strokes--massage, remember?)as it was pouring rain so we grabbed a couple of hours kip on the couches in the lounge there. Woke up around 8:00 by the sounds of the staff moving about and walked back to the B&B, showered and had breakfast and then discovered they didn't accept credit cards and had to return to town for cash, then headed off.

Upon hitting Dublin with half an hour to go to the start of the game we ran smack into the crowds and traffic moving around Croke Park. Luckily the Gardaí kept things moving, until we were held up by a fight in the middle of Dorset Street between a taxi driver and his irate Chinese passenger. Once this was sorted out Gerry decided to take a "short cut" via Capel street, just as an ambulance arrived for a elderly gent who had collapsed on the street--we were stuck behind the ambulance for about 20 mins. So after an eventful day we managed to get to our local for most of the game--the French just pipped us!

Many thanks to all who made this a great time and hope to see some of you soon! I'll place photos on my Roguery site later in the week.

Ah Fibs, I was looking for your arrival at Dumigans on Sunday, and was surprised you didn't make it, and now I know why! All I can say is this, illness is not an acceptable excuse for missing any part of a Mudgathering! Only death is an acceptable excuse, and a solicitor's letter accompanied by a death certificate, must be supplied in all cases.
Smashing weekend, great to see all the folks again, and I also add my welcome to Gizmo, who fitted in right away, and has a lovely voice.
Between raffle money, donations, and the auctioning off of Mary's donated raffle prize of a bottle of bourbon, [well done Terry!], we have raised £120 for Mudcat.

From: MudGuard

I'll write down my thoughts about the Loughstock 007 weekend here - ordered by random ...

What an unusual picture of me, Bente - me close to some pot of food ...
I can't understand why Skarpi wanted to change my Mudcat name from MudGuard to Potaslekker (spelling?) ...

On the topic of renaming: there was a suggestion of renaming the event from Loughstock to Lockstock as there has been another Lock out situation ...

My flight to Munich landed 15 minutes early - thus the total delay in flights for this weekend is drastically reduced to a mere 13:15 hours (11 hours into London, 2.5 hours to Belfast, - .25 hours to Munich)

I second what Giok said about Gizmo/GTS - her voice when singing is lovely. But to have her combined with Liz giggling and squeaking is horrible if the distance is less than a couple of miles ;-)

Thanks to Maureen (spelling?) f/k/a EmmaB for my (second, the first I had to hand over to Liz ...) raffle price - I might need some help with translation/understanding some of the recipes, my kitchen English is more like pidgeon English.

Oakley, the Granary Steps are lovely! And thanks for the Sunday 11am tea!

Many thanks to the management of Hotel Draper for the late pickup service and the bed (though there was almost no time to use it) - without that hotel it would be much more complicated for me to get to Portaferry.
Thanks to Paul for organizing/driving the car from Belfast to Portaferry.

Of course, many thanks to all the musicians for a big load of good songs and tune!

Thanks, Skarpi, for recognizing the tune I tried to play on the whistle - the fact that you recognized it tells me I was not too far off ...

Bente, thanks for the offer of meeting at Arhus (don't know how to put the ° on top of the A) - I found it on the map. I am quite sure that I will pass through that town, but not the date.

Thanks, Kate, for starting the Loughstock tradition!

Thanks, Exploris, for having your 20th anniversary to coincide with Loughstock and for reducing the entrance fee to 20p for that day. Many nice fishes there (but no chips to go with them ...)

I'll try to work through my pictures tomorrow after work.

Thanks to Liz/Maureen for organizing the Sunday dinner, it was lovely! Thanks to all the kitchen helpers (before AND after dinner).

Thanks to Skarpi for bringing Brennivin and fish and bread.

Thanks to Barholm and its staff for running the hostel and providing great Ulster fries (and light bulbs!). (might be nice to have pillows in the bedrooms, though)

Thanks to Giok for organizing the Saturday evening.
Thanks to the local kids for not disturbing us earlier ;-)

Thanks to Sparkle for sparkling * ;-) * ;-) * ;-)

Thanks to Max for Mudcat - without it I'd never know any of you! (Ok, I don't know whether you are thankful to Max for knowing me ...)

Thanks to all participants for a great weekend!

And last but not least:
Looking forward to Loughstock Sixpack next year!

(no guarantee for this list to be complete)

Now now, MudGuard.. you didn't HAVE to hand over the raffle prize to me... but the gesture was kind and gratefully received.

You'll never guess - I haven't even opened them yet!

Skarpi - the fish did not get wasted or thrown away. I have it here with me and occasionally take a nibble, although the majority of it is helping to feed 2 very annoyed cats! The bread I finished yesterday and it was as good as it had been on Sunday.

Nice pix Liz. Do you put ordinary batteries in your camera? If you do, that's why it eats them, buy rechargable NI-MH batts, it's cheaper in the long run.
I've suddenly realised how I might have caught my lurgi, after thinking about Fib's post about her absence from the festivities.
It's Lily's fault!!
Still it's a small price to pay for a wee hug from such a lovely lady.{And she does like men called John!}

Well I am back home after a very music packed week! Portaferry was grand. Too bad about the "invaders" who came into Fiddler's on Saturday night, but the conservatory at Barholm was so nice that I think we should just hold the Saturday night concert/sessions there next year.   And the quiet Sunday singing session at Dumigans was just the way to cap off the weekend. It was so nice to meet Gizmo after chatting so much, and also to meet Liz and Manitas, Skipjack, Oaklet, and Gunna (aka Mrs. Skarpi!)as well as new Mudcatter Gulliver (really enjoyed his singing). I was happy to have a chance to see two old friends, Chris Caldwell and Stevie Mulholland who came by on Friday and played some tunes. There are too many highlights to list -I enjoyed it ALL - including the aquarium (a bargain at 20p!) and the drive Leadfingers and I took with the Skarpis where we saw St. Patrick's grave and hiked a little bit around the Mountains of Mourne. Of course my holiday didn't end there - I had some time in London where Terry escorted me around to the folk "hot spots" - Maidenhead, Herga and Sharps! I did get manage to take in a bit of non-music culture - spent an afternoon with Terry and LTS at the Victoria and Albert Museum. I only wish I could have stayed longer - it was all over much too soon!

As I said before - absolutely brilliant, if I don't plan for next year I'll be able to go. If I plan now, something will go wrong. Can't wait to meet everyone next year (I'm not planning!)

Doesn't sparkles look soooooo much better in the pics, especially after her 'puberty'.

She was a little tart this past week too. A couple of nights I had mini sessions (consisting of 3 people) at my friends home. She was used by a couple of gorgeous young lads. I'm telling you now, that sparkles is a little play around.

Those captions are very good for those who put up pics. I'm loving them all. My name is spelt Nicci or Nicolette though for future references.

Eurogathering: Kiel: 4 - 6 May.

Who from the Portaferry gang is going there? I'm planning to go to Germany next month and will know after that if I'll be able to get to Kiel. If I do I might bring a couple of German friends.

From: GUEST,Chris Smith

Sorry to use this list for personal matters, but I found this old post, and wondered if you are still in contact with Ali Scott. He was a friend of my brother-in-law John McGowan, who has sadly died, and the funeral is this coming Friday, 2nd March. We'd like him to know, and if possible come to the funeral. If you have an address, phone number, or whatever, could you let me know at chris@skerries.demon.co.uk, please? Thanks.

Chris

>Did you ever get down to the musters at the Cittie of York in Holborn? I used to go down with my mate Tom Gilmour. A few Civil War types used to drink in his local, the Dock & Duck at Palmers Green which is renowned as being the centre of the universe, and got us involved. Let's see, there was Martin Brain, Keith and Alison, Nell and her hubby and Ali Scott.
