10 Sep 06 - 07:15 PM (#1831472) Subject: Folk in North Kent, Saturdays From: Richard Bridge As readers elsewhere may have noticed, the refurbishment of my house after subsidence (thank you insurers) procedes toward conclusion, approximately coterminously with the end of the UK festival season. I have no festivals booked (yet) after Tenterden. Sally and Ken have gone from the pub next door. The current managers - well, you know the line "Clogs, and he'll always be clogs love...? The landlady of the pub over the road in the other pub (new landlady, not the woman I used to love to hate and her bind-eye-to-drugs-deals-husband is gone too) is checking whether her lease permits her to put a guest bitter in occasionally (I am sure the EC directive so requires). Normally she does not sell beer, but only lager and keg and girly drinks. However the pub has a nice acoustic (and a music licence). If I were minded, for the winter, ie after Tenterden, to resurrect the once-a-month North Kent song/sessions (arrive, go to pub, drink, sing/play/recite/declaim/dance anything you like (even country, James Blount or Irish rebel), go back to my house, drink more (if you bring it) till you fall over, use guest bedrooms/floors/caravan/etc for sleeping, wake with hangover and be obliged to eat chilli vegetarian stoo, go home and regret it) - exactly who might be interested if I do it? I would hope Essex Girl, Dipsodeb and family, Fisheye squeeze and George, Growler, Melodeonboy, Little Legs, and maybe TDL might be relied upon. Please log in and confirm. Can anyone get a definite commitment from Woodsie and Kenneth Ingham or others from S. London? What about Gwenzilla? Can anyone figure out why no other Kent folkies come ? I ask as the nuclear core is on the cusp of viability. Response may decide whetehr it occurs or not. |
10 Sep 06 - 09:11 PM (#1831541) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: GUEST,TDL Thankyou for including us in your list of regulars. I am sure we'd be interested, as the sessions were originally great fun. Kenneth Ingham rarely travels outside of Greenwich as the Kent air seems too rarified for him. If there was a bus direct to Lower Stoat he'd be on it- maybe. Woodsie- can be relied on for venues within a twenty mile radius of Greenwich but is unable to find the Isle of Grain. Gwenzilla stays away from Eltham, possibly because TDL didn't go to her gig there. She doesn't like our stuff either so doupt she'd bother. Any other Kent folkies must be washing their hair.If you do go ahead I will put details on our websites if you like. Sue |
11 Sep 06 - 03:37 AM (#1831657) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Richard Bridge Hi Friday Girl - you must have a time machine, none of the main male Kent folkies have any (well, much) hair left... |
11 Sep 06 - 05:33 AM (#1831710) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: melodeonboy What good news, Richard! I'm definitely interested. I can't promise 100% attendance, as JumboGumbo will have gigs on some Saturdays, but I'm very enthusiastic about the idea and I suspect Growler and Little Legs will be too. |
11 Sep 06 - 09:12 AM (#1831796) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Essex Girl Yes Richard, I'm still interested. As soon as you have a date I'll talk to DK. He was interested but needs to arrange transport. I can always give him a lift. Sue, Gwen doesn't come because 1) she hasn't got a car and 2) she has a 14 year old at home. Otherwise I know she would enjoy the evening there. |

17 Sep 06 - 08:50 PM (#1837013) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Girl Friday Good. But does that mean DK will turn up? He can stay up beyond midnight without turning into a pumpkin. We saw him Saturday/Sunday. Does the pub sell half decent cider? that seems to stimulate him. |
20 Sep 06 - 06:44 PM (#1839552) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: GUEST Reefer, errr... Refresh! |
20 Sep 06 - 10:15 PM (#1839686) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Richard Bridge I think the pub sells the trendy Wankers (err, sorry, Magners) cider. They have checked with the brewery and are allowed a guest beer. I have promised to put them in touch with the Nelson brewery. There may be some pipes problems, so they are planning to put the barrels in the kitchen and serve under gravity, the old-fashioned way. Heckled Sven will NOT be on the list since the strength has been reduced (and the flavour too) by the brewery. The pub will be getting the beer in specially for us as they normally sell only lager and keg on draught (under pressure), so I will be asking those definitely coming to a particular night to sign up for the specific dates in advance to allow for the right amount of beer to be ordered 10 days in advance and be racked by the Wednesday to be settled by the Saturday and ready to drink. If the pub gets too little beer in then the beer will run out and you will have to drink the house spirits which are very reasonable price and good quality (the whisky, for example, despite the label, is a brand the name of which has a very familiar "ring" to it). If the pub gets too much beer in and has to throw it away when it does not get drunk then we will not be popular and the getting in in advance of beer will stop and thirsty folkies will have to sing Australian songs like "Pub with no beer". Current (variable) plans are to start after Tenterden, and run until just before Miskin, then shut down for summer again... By the way, are there any more festivals in the South East after Tenterden? |

01 Oct 06 - 04:30 PM (#1847747) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Richard Bridge Right, 99, change hands, new plans. STILL probably 21st Oct, but PROBABLY (I await Dilligaf getting back to me with the pub's confirmation) in UPPER Stoat, not Lower Stoat, at the White Horse. Paddy has kindly offered to stay sober so he can use his WWII US Army truck to ferry us all back to Chez Builders after the event. I am hoping to be moved back into the house entirely by then.... It is of course illegal and so uninsured to use the truck as a bus... No liability accepted. |
01 Oct 06 - 04:45 PM (#1847759) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Richard Bridge Woo Woo! We have confirmation. Game on Sat eve 21 Oct at the White Horse Upper Stoke. 10 Oct 06 - 06:28 PM (#1855310) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Richard Bridge Taxi? Why shouldn't you call it a taxi? I guess I'd better get organising! I expect carpet cleaners this weekend. If they fix carpet then I can get furniture back in! If not then while we await new carpet on the builders there will be big room with no furniture, so bring not only sleeping bag and inflatable (bed, what did you think that I meant?) but also seat!! Rendezvous at White Horse OK? If you want to rendezvous chez moi and for me to arrange army truck over to pub as well as army truck back, squeak now or for ever hold your pieces. "Session" rules - everyone can join in with anything (unless Little Legs gets on his high horse (how?)). There will be songs. If you want to diddle, come prepared to lead it (this is starting to sound like the new Channel 5 series of programmes, no?) TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FOLKIES THAT YOU KNOW. Who wants to twist Brian Rodgers' arm? Who can get on to Del Boy or Brian the Beer? Or Gas Stove? Where are the Kent folkies? What about the Barden of England (or is he at Manumission for the night?) |
11 Oct 06 - 06:42 PM (#1856268) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Girl Friday How about I put it on my website(s)? |

13 Oct 06 - 11:16 AM (#1857882) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Richard Bridge We have a problem, Heuston! The carpet cleaners who were removing the ground in dirt in the carpet left by the Poles who removed the asbestos (at the Court of King Caractacus, etc) have just left. "Reliable" Removals who have most of my furniture cannot re-deliver it until the 27th. So I have a big empty drawing room, and two big empty bedrooms. So, if anyone is still going to come on the 21st to the White Horse, I have maybe half a dozen camping chairs that we can sit on in the large empty drawing room by the fire, and if people want more they will ahve to bring them. Likewise I have two large empty bedrooms that can be girls' dorm and boys' dorm respectively - bring own lilo, pump, sleeping bag and pillows!! I also of course have the caravan... Please email or PM me to advise if coming or not so I can let Paddy know about the army truck and need/not for it. |

The possibility of a lift from Paddy sounds good if he is willing and able. Chairs are not a problem I can raid the campervan. Might even be a good idea to drive it down to sleep in as it will free up more space in your lovely des res. If you need ought else let me know. Is the kitchen operational? I can make up a huge pot of something and bring it with me and some nice bread for dunking. ~Debs~ |
14 Oct 06 - 06:51 AM (#1858543) Subject: RE: Folk in North Kent From: Richard Bridge Kitchen is fine... I will buy stew components Weds. The rooms out are the drawing room and the two big bedrooms, so I'm projecting the bedroom with the en-suite as girls' dorm and the other big bedroom as boys' dorm, and any loveydovey couples attending can fight for the middle front bedroom with the sofabed.... I was thinking of driving volvo over to White Horse with some people, and locking instruments either in pub or in volvo after, coming back by paddywagon, and walking over in morning to sober up and find volvo.... Of course I have no idea how many attending and staying overnight. I am about to level caravan and set up water etc so that will serve two, and it can be turned into a giant fornicatorium (large double bed rahter than two singles) without much trouble. |
