Some time ago I wrote out my Lifetime Wish list.. things I've always wanted to do/see. Yesterday I fulfilled the oldest one. Ever since I read the Alan Garner books in the 1970's, I've wanted to go to the Edge. When I got older and learned there was a pub there, that doubled my desire. Well... on the way back from Southport yesterday, we diverted across to Wilsmlow and went to the Edge. To my lasting regret, the pub is now a posh expensive restaurant but the tearooms behind are fantastic. But it was worth waiting for. The woods are magical, full of shapes and colours that defy description, the rocks glitter and glow with mineral deposits and trees form the most incredible shapes. There are 'fairy baths', 'fairy ladders and dancing lawns' ~ little pools of water in tree trunks, mossy banks laces with tree roots and little sunny banks of bright green moss like a lawn... it was worth getting lost in the woods, just to see the incredible range of the colour green and the stunning views out over green pasture and red village... So that was my wish list ticked, anyone else done one of theirs recently? LTS |

The Edge is Alderley Edge , near Wilmslow in Cheshire, UK. It's a natural escarpment which has been used since Bronze Age times as mineral mines. There are some 18 miles of caves under those hills, some only accessible by crawling flat - just as described in Alan Garner's book 'The Weirdstone of Brisingmen'. It's a bit of a walk up wooded slopes and the sandstone rocks can be a bit treacherous as they tend to sandpaper your knees if you fall.... LTS |
